Guelph’s Proudfoot honoured for second time in three weeks as ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS athlete of the week

OTTAWA (CIS) – Joëlle Gosselin, a soccer player from Laval University, and Ross Proudfoot, a cross country runner from the University of Guelph, are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 9, 2014.

Gosselin, a first-year international and modern languages student from Quebec City, was named tournament MVP at the CIS championship held in her hometown after she helped the host Rouge et Or become the first RSEQ program to capture the Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy, on Sunday. The freshman striker scored the equalizer in the 88^th minute in the opening round as Laval survived a scare to edge Western in a shootout, was named her team's player of the game in a 3-0 semifinal win over Fraser Valley and then exploded with a hat-trick, including the game-winner, in a resounding 5-0 gold-medal victory over two-time defending champion Trinity Western, once again claiming game-MVP honours. Gosselin was the top scorer at the competition with four goals.

Basketball players Kiley DeLong of UNB, Jylisa Williams of Lakehead and Kris Young of UBC were also nominated for the women's award.

Proudfoot, a fifth-year human kinetics student from Sudbury, Ont., wrapped up his stellar university career in style last Saturday when he claimed the individual gold medal and guided the Guelph men to their remarkable ninth straight team banner at the CIS championships in St. John's. In extremely challenging weather conditions, the senior topped a field of 124 competitors thanks to his time of 33:47.2 on 10 kilometres and helped the Gryphons finish first in the team standings with an impressive 76-point lead over Victoria (27 vs. 103). Proudfoot, a former CIS rookie of the year and silver medallist in 2012, became the second runner in Guelph history to end his career as a first-team all-Canadian and national team champion in each of his five university seasons.  

UPEI soccer player Jared Murphy, Laval cross country runner Charles Philibert-Thiboutot and Calgary hockey player Kris Lazaruk were the other male nominees.
