Cross Country Roundup: Brock stages final race before OUA championships

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University cross country team hosted their annual Brock Open Saturday in preparation for the upcoming OUA Championships. The Brock women finished second overall while the men were fourth.
In the women's 4k race, Brock rookie Annelise Martin led the way placing 6th overall in a time of 16:18.8. Right behind her was teammate Brittany Murphy who was 7th in a time of 16:27.7. Brittany Dunbar was the third Badgers runner to cross the finish line placing 13th in a time of 17:07.2 followed a second later by Brianna Cauley who was 14th in a time 17:08.5. Rounding out the Brock women were Ana Gheorghe (18th - 17:24.5), Laurie Taylor (19th - 17:37.3), Skye Nagy (20th - 17:39.5) and Sabrina Waller (22nd - 17:44.8).
In the men's 8k race, the Badgers Mike Van Bakel had a strong performance finishing 4th overall in a time 27:39.1. Sven Perleth came in 13th place in a time of 28:57.3. Rounding out the Brock men were Alastair Thompson (21st - 30:10.4), Andrew Lovshin (34th - 32:43.5), Mike Ferguson (38th - 33:38.0), Mike Bakos (46th - 35:23.2) and Dan Cherubini (47th - 35:55.8).

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues cross-country teams competed at the Brock Open on Saturday, October 19 in St. Catharines, Ont.
The Blues women topped the team standings, finishing ahead of the host Badgers.
Veteran runner Donna Vakalis finished second overall individually, with a time of 15:35.4 in the 4km race.
Claire Summer (15:48.0), Aija Thompson (16:02.8) and Adelaida Blaxley (16:02.8) placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
Alexey Strokach led Toronto's men to a third-place team finish. He crossed the 8km finish line in third place in a time of 27:23.2. Brendan Hynes and Devonte Cummings finished in eighth and 10th, respectively with times of 27:56.5 and 28:19.0.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, October 26 as they head to Hamilton, Ont. for the 2013 OUA championships.

Wilfrid Laurier
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. (October 21, 2013) - Women's cross country runner Sarah Carnmer-Byng of Mississauga, Ont., won the gold medal at the Brock Open this past weekend in St. Catharines.
Cranmer-Byng, a second year kinesiology and physical education major, finished the 4km course in a time of 15 minutes and 34.5 seconds, edging out Torontos Donna Vakalis by less than a second.
Her first place finish led the Hawks to a third place team finish in the event at Laurier finished behind Toronto and Brock in the standings.
In the men's event, the Golden Hawks successfully defended the team title they won the previous year thanks to a strong run by Adam Cornwall of St. Marys, Ont. The third year runner was the top University finisher, crossing the line in second place in a time of 27:06.0.
Two other Hawks finished in the Top 10 on Saturday, including Elliot De Lange and Ian Turnbull, both of London, Ont., who grabbed fifth and ninth respectively after running the 8km course.
Those strong results helped Laurier edge out York for the team title as the Hawks won gold with a score of 46, two points ahead of the Lions.
The Hawks will now travel to Hamilton on Saturday, October 26 for the OUA Championships, hosted by the McMaster Marauders.
