Cross Country Roundup: Warriors have strong showing at Don Mills Waterloo Open

The Algoma University Thunderbirds Cross-Country Running team competed at the Don Mills-Waterloo Open this past Saturday.
Daniel Scarpino had the top overall finish for the team, placing 50th, with a time of 26:55 in the 7.5km race.
Danielle Dupuis had the second highest overall finish, placing 61st. She was the highest placing for the women. She completed her 5km circuit in a time of 21:42.
Kian Brooks finished the race 78th overall in his 7.5km race, with a time of 34.23. He suffered from an injured foot.

Brock
Waterloo, Ont. – The Brock University cross country team raced extremely well at the Don Mills Open on Saturday, hosted by the Waterloo Warriors. The Badgers women's team placed 3rd on the 5km course, while the men placed 5th on the 7.5km course.
Once again, rookie Annelise Martin led the women's team, placing 15th in a time of 18:53. Martin was followed closely by Brittany Murphy in 18th, Brianna Cauley in 23rd, Katie Roy in 24th, Brittany Dunbar in 27th, Sabrina Waller in 33rd, Ana Gheorghe in 34th, Skye Nagy in 37th and Laurie Taylor in 50th.
The Badgers men's team was lead by Mike Van Bakel, finishing in 7th overall, with a time of 23:25, less than one minute behind Nick McGraw of Queen's, the race leader. Sven Perleth was the second Badger to cross the line, coming in 9th, Kelly Saul was 26th, Alastair Thompson was 33rd, Mike Ferguson was 54th, and Dan Cherubini was 73rd.
Coach Emily Allan-Dakin said that "everyone ran really aggressively, which was good to see. It was a good tune-up and confidence booster for the OUA championships in a few weeks".
The team will now take a break for Thanksgiving and get back to racing on Oct. 9 on home turf, at the Brock Open. The final race of the season is the OUA Championships on Oct. 26, hosted by McMaster.

Laurier
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 6, 2013) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks cross-country team had a number of excellent showings at the Waterloo Don Mills Open on Saturday afternoon.
Women's runner Sarah Cranmer-Bing of Mississauga, Ont., led her team with a fourth place finish in a time of 17 minutes and 53.73 seconds. Her run was just seven seconds off a podium finish.
Jacqueline Tmej of Toronto was Laurier's next best finisher as she crossed the line in 20th after a time of 19:09.80.
In the men's race, Elliot de Lange of London, Ont., and Adam Cornwall of St. Marys, Ont., both finished in the Top 5. de Lange crossed the line in fourth place with a time of 23:06.49, just five seconds off the podium, while Cornwall was fifth in a time of 23:09.54.
Brett Cameron of Toronto, and Abdurahman Zaghlol of Cambridge, Ont., also earned Top 20 finishes, crossing the line in 10th and 15th place respectively.
The Hawks will race in one last tune up event before the OUA Championships in two weeks time when they compete in the Brock Open on Saturday, October 19.

Waterloo
The Waterloo women's cross country team swept the podium amongst OUA runners for the second straight year at the Don Mills Open on Saturday afternoon at the north campus of the University. As a team the Warrior women finished the race first overall.
Kristen Marchant (Newmarket) was the top OUA women's runner finishing the 5km race in a time of 17:09 while fellow teammates Kristen Flanagan (Kitchener) and Heather Dimond (Orangeville) were 30 and 37 seconds back respectively.
Lisa Flemming (Bracebridge) was the next best Warriors running the winding course in a time of 19:09 good for 19th overall while Mamiko Noguchi (Shiga) finished in 21st with a time of 19:11. Overall 12 Waterloo women cross country runners finished the race.
On the men's side Michael Stewart (Mason) finished second overall running the 7.5km race in a time of 22:54 while Dan Fournier was the next best Warrior finishing 13th overall. Ryan Santos (Carleton Place) rounded out the top three Waterloo men's runners with a 19th place finish. As a team the men finished in second spot.
The Warriors now prepare for the Brock Open next Sunday in St. Catharines.

York
The York University Lions women's cross country team finished in second place at the Don Mills Open in Waterloo, Ont., on Saturday (Oct. 5), while the men's team finished in fourth place.
Runners on both squads just missed out on top-10 finishes at the meet. In the 4.85km women's race, rookie Maria Markovac (Toronto) crossed the line in 11th place in a time of 18:31. She has been the top Lions finish at every meet so far this season.
Fourth-year runner Esteban Clavijo (Maple, Ont.) also finished in 11th place in the men's 7.5km race, his best result of the season to date. His time was 23:49, which just three seconds faster than teammate Muad Issa (Mississauga, Ont.), who finished 12th. It was a strong result for the second-year runner, who was making his season debut at the meet after an injury kept him out of action until this weekend.
Two other women also finished in the top 20 in the field of 75 runners. Giulia Ferrante (Maple, Ont.) crossed the finish line in 16th place in a time of 18:58, while Emily McGaugh (Brampton, Ont.) was just one place and five seconds behind her.
Rounding out the results in the women's race were Veera Sethuraman (Pleasanton, Calif.), who finished 22nd in a time of 19:13, Darya Chenskikh (Almaty, Kazakhstan), who was 28th in a time of 19:39, Kyla Tanner (Cambridge, Ont.) in 44th place with a time of 20:17 and Janel Halenko (Toronto) in 48th place in a time of 20:35.
Three other Lions also ran in the men's race, which had a field of 79 runners. Chris Pallotta (Etobicoke, Ont.) was 21st in a time of 24:35 in his first meet of the season, Jamie Tarling (Caledon, Ont.) was 31st in a time of 25:27 and Ryan Charlton (Whitby, Ont.) was 43rd in a time of 26:26.
The Lions will be off this coming weekend and then have one more meet before the OUA championships at the end of the month. The squad will be in St. Catharines, Ont., on Saturday, Oct. 19 for the Brock Open.
