It was a run fueled by Gryphon pride today at the New Balance Vic Matthews Open as the Guelph Gryphons men's and women's team impressed the hometown crowd with first place team finishes.
Aaron Hendrikx and Ross Proudfoot led the Gryphons in the men's individual race finishing first and second. Overall the Gryphon men won the team event with finishers placing 1,2,7,9,13,15 and 23. Windsor finished second and Speed River third.
In the women's individual race the Gryphons were led by Genevieve Lalonde with a third place finish, followed closely by Heather Petrick and Carise Thompson who were fourth and fifth respectively. Overall the Gryphon women's team finished first placing runners at 3,4,5,7,9,10 and 14. Queen's was second in the team event and Western third.

McMaster
Lionel Sanders and Maddy McDonald made successful season debuts as the Marauder cross country teams competed at the Vic Matthews Open in Guelph on Saturday.
McMaster's men were bolstered by the return of Sanders, even as Connor Darlington, Taylor Reid, Austen Forbes and Jordan Bierema were held out of the team's second race of the season. The third-year team leader scored first for McMaster on Saturday, finishing fifth in the men's eight-kilometre race with a time of 31:44.3.
Taylor Forbes scored second in his season debut, crossing the line 14th in 32:22.7, while Blair Morgan followed three places later to score third. Rookie Paul Rochus and fourth-year Eric Barry each enjoyed performances that coach Rory Sneyd singled out as excellent, finishing 25th and 36th respectively.
Gabe Ghiglione (29) and Ivan Meizinger (41) were the Marauders remaining scorers, as McMaster's men finished third among CIS teams at the event.
The Marauder women also benefitted from the return of their top runner in the form of second-year Maddy McDonald. She did not disappoint in her first race of the fall season, scoring first for McMaster after completing the women's five-kilometre course in 20:53.2 and finishing eighth.
Kierstyn Myers placed 27th to score second, while rookie Emily Nowak finished five positions later to score third. Sneyd praised the runs of sophomores Raquel Burgess and Maddy Benjamin, who finished 41st and 46th respectively to contribute to McMaster's score on the day. Charlotte Ward (45) and Adrienne Morgan (51) completed the scoring for the Marauders, who finished sixth as a team.
Veteran Courtney Patterson, McMaster's top scorer from a week earlier, and rookie Phoebe Cseresnyes were held out of competition on Saturday. A Marauder split-squad will travel to Waterloo to compete this coming weekend, before the team returns to full strength to compete in Montreal on Oct. 12.

Queen’s
GUELPH, Ont. (September 28, 2013) - Julie-Anne Staehli of women's cross country won the Guelph Invitational - New Balance Vic Matthews Open in a time of 20:24 while teammate Victoria Coates placed second. The women's team took a second place finish while the men's team finished sixth.
Staehli led the way for the women's side in a time of 20:24.5 which was seven seconds ahead of the second place runner and teammate Victoria Coates who finished at a time of 20:31. Following the top two were Charlotte Dunlap who finished in 23rd at 22:00 to round out the Gaels in the top 25.
On the men's side Archer finished in a time of 31:57 finishing in sixth place. Alex Wilkie finished 34th with a time of 33:34 and Alex Kalbfleisch finished in 38th with a time of 33:52.
Next up for Queen's is a meet in Montreal hosted by UQAM.

Brock
Guelph, Ont. – The Brock University cross country team raced well at the New Balance Vic Matthews Open, hosted by the Guelph Gryphons this past Saturday. This was the first time the new 6km OUA distance was debuted for the women, while the men raced 10km. The women's team placed 9th and the men finished in 12th place.
Rookie Annelise Martin continues to be a leader amongst the women's team, placing 80th in a time of 24:01 on the 6km course. Martin was followed by Brittany Murphy in 92nd, Brittany Dunbar in 98th, Brianna Cauley in 99th, Katie Roy in 104th, Skye Nagy in 109th, Ana Gheorghe in 113th, Sabrina Waller in 116th, Laurie Taylorin 127th and Samantha Guyatt was 132nd.
Once again, the Badgers men were lead by Mike Van Bakel, finishing in 52nd place with a time of 33:55 over the 10km course, just over two minutes behind the race leader. The men's team followed Van Bakel with Sven Perleth coming in 80th, Kelly Saul in 107th, Andrew Lovshin in 123rd, Mike Ferguson in 129th, and Dan Cherubini in 136th.
"This was the first time the women have raced 6km, and if their performance today is any indication of how they will handle the new distance at the OUA Championships, I think we'll be just fine!" says coach Emily Allan-Dakin.
Next, the team will be racing the Don Mills Open hosted by Waterloo on Saturday, Oct. 5 before taking a break for Thanksgiving.

Toronto
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's cross country team placed fourth, while the men were seventh at the 2013 New Balance Vic Matthews Open on Saturday, Sept. 28 in Guelph, Ont.
Toronto's women finished with a combined team score of 90 points, behind the host Guelph Gryphons (28), Queen's Gaels (66) and Western Mustangs (81).
Fourth-year veterans Colleen Hennessy (Oakville, Ont.) and Charloote Marcotte-Toale (Windsor), as well as sophomore Kelly Hennessy (Oakville) led the Blues, placing 14th, 15th and 16th, respectively. Colleen Hennessy crossed the finish line in 21:34.4, with Marcotte-Toale and Kelly Hennessy right behind in 21:37.9.
The Blues men finished with 208 points, just three points behind the Laurier Golden Hawks. Guelph took the top spot with 32 points in the team standings.
Fifth-year veteran Jake Woloshyn (Scarborough) led the Blues as the 38th runner to cross the finish line in 33:22.1. Sacha Smart was not far behind in a time of 33:34.0.

Waterloo
The Waterloo cross country team travelled to Guelph on Saturday to compete in the Vic Matthews Open. This meet was a prelude to the OUA Championship as most of the Ontario teams were represented at this meet.
The women had a great day as they placed 8th as a team in the 6km race. Leading the way for the Warriors were the dynamic trio of Kristen Marchant (Newmarket) (20th, 21.46),Heather Dimond (Orangeville) (32nd, 22.23), and Kristen Flanagan (Kitchener) (35th, 22.30). They were followed by rookie Emily Nichol, Mamiko Noguchi (Shiga), Lisa Flemming (Bracebridge), Rebecca Sims, Rachel McInnis (London), Jamie Flanagan (Kitchener), Emily Krueger, and Tiffany Sun Del Cruz.
The men had a tougher day in the 10km race placing 11th in the field. They were led by Michael Stewart (Mason) (57th, 34.07), Dan Fournier (74th, 34.39), Jason Laporta (88th, 35.21), Ryan Santos (Carleton Place) (106th, 36.23) and Skye Wattie (Toronto) (113th, 37.24) as the counters. Also running were first year runners Tian Shi Ning, Hadi El-Shyueb, and Spencer Kelly (Windsor).
Next up for the Warriors is their own meet on Saturday Oct 5 on the North Campus of CIF. The women race at 12 noon and the men at 12:45pm as part of the Don Mills Open.

York
The York University Lions men's and women's cross country teams both finished in 10th place in the team standings at the New Balance Vic Matthews Open in Guelph, Ont., this past Saturday (Sept. 28).
The best result of the day came courtesy of Esteban Clavijo (Maple, Ont.), who crossed the finish line in 33rd place in a time of 33:26 in the field of 135 runners. The mark was a new personal best time in the 10km race.
Also finishing in the top 40 was Suraj Sharma (Brampton, Ont.), who was four spots behind Clavijo in 37th place in a time of 33:50.
The rest of the field included Harishan Karunenthiran (Brampton, Ont.), who was 64th in a time of 36:13, Jamie Tarling(Caledon, Ont.) in 67th place in a time of 37:21 and rookie Brandon Belan (Espanola, Ont.) in 71st place in a time of 38:31.
The leader in the women's race was once again rookie Maria Markovac (Toronto), who has been the first York runner to cross the finish line in each of the first three races of the season. She completed the 6km race in a time of 24:05 to place 56th.
Two other Lions finished in the top 60 in the field of 151 runners. Emily McGaugh (Brampton, Ont.) was 58th in a time of 24:22 and rookie Veera Sethuraman (Pleasanton, Calif.) in a time of 24:24.
Rounding out the women's team were Darya Chenskikh (Almaty, Kazakhstan) in 67th place in a time of 24:55, Giulia Ferrante (Maple, Ont.) in 70th place in a time of 25:16, Kyla Tanner (Cambridge, Ont.) in 76th place in a time of 26:08 and Janel Halenko (Toronto) in 78th place in a time of 26:25.
The Lions will be back in action again next weekend when the teams travel to Waterloo, Ont., for the Don Mills Open on Saturday (Oct. 5) beginning at 9am. The women's race at the event is 4km and the men's race is 8km.
