OUA Women's Soccer Roundup Sept 1-3
Sept 3
Laurentian 4, RMC 0
Looking to bounce back from a tough loss at the hands of the Queen's Gaels the day before, the Voyageurs took their frustrations out on the RMC Paladins en route to a 4-0 victory.
The Voyageurs wasted no time getting the scoring started as Brianne Rodrigue scored just eight minutes into the game. Bianca Breiding quickly followed that up with a tally of her own just three minutes later. The Voyageurs maintained their pressure throughout the first half, firing five more shots on the Paladins net and entered halftime up 2-0.
The women picked up right where they left off in the 2nd half, peppering the RMC net with another seven shots on target. The Paladins keeper stood tall until the dying minutes as Sarah Sanford scored a pair of quick goals in the 88th and 90th minutes. The Voyageurs out shot the Paladins 14-2 in the victory and Caitlin McNamara stood tall for the clean sheet.
The Voyageurs will look to continue their momentum into their home opener next Saturday when they host the rival Nipissing Lakers at 12pm. The game will serve as the first game in both the Riley Gallo Cup and the 705 Challenge Cup.

Waterloo 5, Algoma 1 --- (Sept 2- Waterloo 6, Algoma 0)
It's been a good start to the OUA season for the women's soccer team, a really good start. Waterloo improved to 2-0-2 on the weekend with two big wins over Algomoa to remain undefeated on the season.
On Saturday afternoon, it was the Stephanie Penta (Kitchener/) show as the third year defended tallied four of Waterloo's six goals in a 6-0 shutout victory over the Thunderbirds. What was even more impressive was that all of Penta's goals came in the second half, in a span of 38 minutes. The Warriors got their other two goals off the foot of Ciara Dunne (Waterloo/) and Hannah Rempel (Waterloo/). Madison McDonald (Kitchener/) picked up the shutout in net making five stops.
On Sunday, Waterloo again controlled the play from start to finish, topping the T-Birds 5-1. Five different Warriors found the scoresheet to propel Waterloo to victory. Penta scored for her fifth goal of the weekend while Kendra Wynter(Oakville/), Danielle Erb (Waterdown/), Aysun Osmansoy (Waterloo/), and Kaitlyn Unger (Ajax/) all chipped in with one each.
Waterloo is currently in second spot in the OUA with eight points just two back of Guelph who occupies the top spot.

Queens' 4, Nipissing 2
The rain poured down leading into the game, and both teams dealt with cold and wet conditions throughout. The Lakers came out strong to start, getting pressure in on the Gaels end and finally resulting in a goal from Andrea Young past Gaels keeper Alexa Maclatchy-Gaudet (Upper Tantallon, N.S.).
Minutes later the Gaels were able to even the game. Laura Callender(Nepean, Ont.) broke through the Lakers.
A great strike in the 25th minute from Young to the top far corner put the Lakers back in front 2-1, giving Young her second of the half.
Queen's opened up the second half with a quick goal of their own. Alexandra Doane (Brookside, N.S.) potted her second career U SPORTS goal in as many games to tie the game up once again.
Minutes later Jenny Wolever (Toronto) tried to connect with Doane again feeding a cross to the far post, but Doane's deflection went just over the bar. Wolever got another chance later in the half and found Taylor Green (Fall River, N.S.) who was able to connect with her first career U SPORTS goal giving Queen's a 3-2 lead.
The Gaels added another goal, this one off the foot of Matija Skoko (Toronto) who fired a shot just under the bar putting Queen's up 4-2.

McMaster 1, Windsor 1
Patient in the wake of a frustrating first half, the Marauders found their form, and the means to peg their visitors back, in Sunday's second half.
McMaster levelled in the 73rd minute through Steph Roberts, to grab their third draw in three home matches to open the OUA season, fighting the Windsor Lancers to a 1-1 stalemate at Ron Joyce Stadium. Both goalkeepers were busy on the afternoon, with McMaster's Deanna Persico making seven saves, and Windsor's Krissy Brooks countering with nine.
The visitors' lone goal came in the first half through midfielder Jade Samping. It didn't take the visitors long to make a mark on the match, as a loose moment from the Mac defence saw Windsor's Samping come free in the box, and, gathering the ball, turn and fire home in just the ninth minute to open the scoring.
Six minutes later, the Lancers nearly doubled their lead, as a move down the left wing yielded a shot that flashed just wide of the Marauders far post. Both teams struggled to create throughout the rest of the opening half, and Windsor's 1-0 lead carried into the break.
Hungry for an equalizer, the Marauders opened the second half the brighter of the two teams, creating several tight chances inside the visitors' box in the first five minutes of the half, but were unable to find the final touch. After a near miss in the 68th saw Becca Fuerth blaze just over the McMaster bar, the Lancers found the Marauders crossbar in the 73rd, and their wastefulness in front of goal was punished just seconds later.
A McMaster long ball bounced through the Windsor box, unattended by the Lancers defenders, and Marauders forward Roberts latched onto it, tapping the ball into the open net to level the match. The hosts continued to press as the time wore down late in the half, and enjoyed a flurry of chances to score the go-ahead goal, none closer than Jade Smith's curled shot in injury time, which narrowly buzzed over the crossbar.
Fuerth very nearly snatched the full three points for the Lancers moments later, running onto a laid off pass just outside the McMaster box and driving a hard shot just wide of the far post.
NEXT UP: The Marauders travel to North York to take on the York Lions on Thursday, with kickoff slated for 6:00 p.m.

The Gaels got off to a quick start and controlled the possession early. Lidia Bradau (Woodbridge, Ont.) sprung Jenny Wolever (Toronto) with a great through ball past Laurentian for a quality chance to Wolever. Laurentian keeper Caitlyn McNamara held her ground to keep the game scoreless.
Queen's continued to create offensive pressure, Wolever broke in on the right side of McNamara and fed a pass to the far post to a wide open Alexandra Doane (Brookside, N.S.) who made no mistake for her first career U SPORTS goal.
Sarah Nixon (Oakville, Ont.) provided a spark off the bench for the Gaels as just seconds after subbing in she deflected a pass that just popped over the cross bar keeping the game 1-0. Nearing the end of the half, Bradua once again fed a nice pass through this time to Rachel Radu (Ottawa) who buried a shot from just inside the box giving Queen's a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, Wolever notched her first of the season as she crossed over a defender down the left side of the field and fired a shot off the far post for her first of the season.
Laurentian was able to strike with a goal late in the second half to break up the Queen's shutout as a ball popped right onto the foot of Bianca Briedling who fired it past Gaels starting goaltender Marina Ribecca (Vancouver).

Ottawa 6, Ryerson 0
Playing in their final home game for the month of September, the Gee-Gees women's soccer team put on a show for their home crowd.
Scoring in bunches was the theme of the day, as Katherine Bearne netted the team's first, only to be followed up by Faythe Lou less than three minutes later.
It was not until the second half that the offensive show truly begun. A lone goal from second-year striker Emma Lefebvre extended the lead as the Gee-Gees began to dominate the Rams, placing constant pressure in their end of the field.
A flurry of three goals scored by Katerin Delev, Delaney Rickert-Hall, and another from Katherine Bearne from the 66th to 70th minutes sealed the win, proving that this year's team has some serious fire power when needed.
"It's great to see that we can make changes in the lineup and still be dangerous," said Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson. "I like our fitness and I think it made a big difference in being able to get past yesterday's game which had a late start … the girls worked the full 90 minutes for the result."
Going forward in the season, the Gee-Gees will now play their next seven matches on the road. Their early success at home has given them solid positioning in the standings, they are currently tied with UOIT for first place in the OUA East. It will be a true test for the team if they can continue winning through the second half of the season, something they struggled with last year.
"We have to make sure the rest of their life is set. Going on the road can be difficult to balance with school and a personal life," said Johnson. "The month of September is going to be difficult for us, but I think we've got the players that can succeed."
The team's upcoming road stand has stops in Kingston, Toronto, Sudbury, and North Bay, with a lone reprieve in an away match at Carleton.

Western 1, McMaster 0
LONDON, Ont. – A first half goal from Sabrina De Nard and four saves from Megan Girardi led the Western Mustangs to a 1-0 win over the McMaster Marauders on Saturday afternoon at Mustang Field.
"McMaster's front three are very dangerous, I think they scored two goals in each of their first two games, so to get a clean sheet today – I'm very happy with that," said Mustangs head coach Martin Painter. "[We need to work on] a little bit more composure, a little bit better decision making and execution offensively, but the ideas are there and I think we're moving in the right direction."
The win moves the Mustangs to 2-1-0 on the season, while the Marauders fall to 0-1-2.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with Western holding a 4-3 edge in shots.
De Nard broke through for the Mustangs in the 31st minute, finding the back of the net to put Western up 1-0. The goal is the veteran's first of the season, and comes as she's moved up front to play as a forward for the most part so far this year.
"It's a bit of a different pace," said De Nard on moving up to forward this season. "I'm really used to playing defence, I've played defence for my whole career here, but it's a different pace for sure."
"Sabrina had a great game today," said Painter. "First half she played up front, scored a good goal, and causes problems up front [for the opposition]. When she's at the back…she brings so many qualities in different areas. I thought she did a great job in both spots today. Early in the season we've been using her up front, but after today we might have to rethink that."
The Marauders had a chance to tie things up about 10 minutes later when Maila Carboni broke in on the Mustangs net, however Girardi charged out and knocked the ball away to keep the purple and white in front going into the half.
Despite scoring chances for both sides in the final 45 minutes, De Nard's first half goal stood as the only one of the game, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 win and handing the Marauders their first defeat of the season.
The Mustangs now have more than a week until their next regular season contest, when they'll host the Brock Badgers on Sunday, September 10. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Mustang Field.
"[Next week's game is our] fourth game in a row at home, so getting our second win today with such a young group I think was important in building our self-belief and self-confidence is important with matching the work on the training field. Today's win goes a long way because McMaster is a good team and hopefully our confidence and self-belief is up and we can work hard to get another win next week."

UOIT 2, Trent 1
The No. 2 ranked UOIT women's soccer team defeated the Trent Excalibur by a 2-1 score in their home opener at Vaso's Field.
Trent had UOIT up against the ropes for the entire match but the Ridgebacks scored two second half goals including one by Katherine Koehler-Grassau (Greely, Ont.) in the 88th minute to pick up their third straight win to start the season.
UOIT outscored Trent 17-0 last season but despite a winless record so far in three games, the Excalibur have shown they cannot be taken lightly. "The game is changing, we talked about this before the game," said head coach Peyvand Mossavat. "Along with better coaching, there are better players staying in Canada. I think this is a clear testament that Stu's done a great job with Trent. It's not the same team anymore. They're much better and all the credit to them."
UOIT came into the match with the best start in program history and ranked number two in the nation. Koehler-Grassau, head coach Peyvand Mossavat and exercise physiologist and performance analyst Farzad Yousefian were back on the pitch for UOIT after returning from the Summer Universiade in Taipei.
The match was eventful early on as Trent opened the scoring three minutes in and Lauren Rea(Burnaby, B.C.) was booked with a yellow card in the 12th minute. The visitors would go into the halftime break with a one goal lead.
The Ridgebacks came out flying in the second half and Alyssa Nikkel (Toronto, Ont.) equalized with her second goal of the year. UOIT remained the stronger side for the majority of the half and took the lead in the 88th minute as Koehler-Grassau scored the game winning goal in her season debut. The winner came assisted from defender Julia Listro (Toronto, Ont.) who provided a beautiful set-up for Koehler-Grassau to finish.
Despite the close score line, the Ridgebacks dominated the game with possession. UOIT outshot Trent 15-7, with seven of their 15 shots making it on target. "I thought we controlled the game well but couldn't finish," said Mossavat. "The sign of a good team is one that can find those moments to be able to win a game when losing."
The Ridgebacks will next play in the Campus Cup against the Durham Lords on Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. before returning to OUA action on the road against Ryerson on Sept. 9.

Guelph 3, Laurier 0
WATERLOO – If the Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team makes a strong run in the OUA this season, they will undoubtedly look back at results from the first eight days as a key contributor. Four away matches, points in all of them, and not a single goal conceded. The Gryphons capped off their grueling opening road stretch with a decisive 3-0 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks Saturday afternoon at University Stadium.
Christina Woloszczuk, Hayley Howes and Venessa Mazur had the goals for Guelph (3-0-1), which has reeled off three straight wins, all clean sheets, after drawing 0-0 in Windsor last Friday. The side has banked 10 of a possible 12 points and sit atop the OUA West. The Gryphons have been a disciplined group at their end of the pitch in those road matches and relied on goals well into the second half to pull out back-to-back 1-0 victories at Western and at York. Against Laurier, Guelph was on the front foot from the get go.
"Our goal was to create more offensive chances," said coach Shayne Campbell. "We hadn't done that too much in previous games so we wanted to get forward and have some looks at goal. "Laurier is always a good footballing team and we're aware they have some dangerous players. We had to be strong centrally and force them to defend by putting pressure on their backline."
The visitors opened the scoring with some good combination play down the right flank in the 23rd minute. Midfielder Megan Sullivan made a run and crossed the ball into the area for Woloszczuk to tap in. The Gryphons kept up the pressure and tallied again moments before the half as Howes notched her second of the season. The third-year Windsor, ON native finished a squared ball from Katya Tarasoff after a good build up.
They would add another in the 58th minute as Mazur, a first-year player, poked in a loose ball for the first goal of her OUA career. Goalkeeper Libby Brenneman was reliable again in recording her fourth clean sheet in four appearances. The fourth-year Criminal Justice major from Baden, ON saved a penalty late in the match, diving right to parry the ball away.
She also had some good fortune as two Laurier attempts rang off her crossbar. "We're very happy with the clean sheet," said Campbell, who was pleased with the opening week but aware Guelph's work is just beginning.
The Gryphons finally play on their own pitch when they face the Brock Badgers Friday, Sept. 8 in the home opener at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Match time is 6pm.

Carleton 2, Toronto 1
The Carleton Ravens women's soccer team outlasted the Toronto Varsity Blues en route to a 2-1 victory at MNP Park Saturday afternoon.
The Varsity Blues wasted no time getting on the board as they crossed the ball into the box and fired away at Ravens keeper Rada Mintchev (Ottawa, ON). The fifth year blocked the shot but couldn't retain the rebound as Toronto's Julia Gonzalvez tapped it in for a 1-0 lead in the 4th minute.
Breaking away from their pattern of conceding back-to-back goals, the Carleton women immediately went on the offensive with three straight clean passes up the spine of the field. Melet Cherent (Ottawa, ON) gathered the ball in the Ravens' half and smoothly passed it to Emily Copeland Dinan (Ottawa, ON), who one-timed it to Tori MacFarlane (Kars, ON). Macfarlane bumped the ball past the Varsity Blue goalie and smashed it into the open net to tie the game 1-1 in the 6th minute.
Both teams struggled to maintain any intense offensive pressure and, while both goalies were busy, there weren't any nerve-wracking chances on net until much later in the half. In the last five minutes, play picked up for both teams but it was Toronto that found themselves with a prime opportunity on a corner into the box.
The midfielder received the ball in perfect position with a clear opening on the right side but misfired her shot well above and away from the net. The Ravens, clearly wanting to enter halftime with momentum after a slow start, had back-to-back attempts in the box. With a shot fired right at the goalie and a clean cross just out of reach of any forward, the women couldn't break through.
The second half began much like the first, with an immediate offensive attack – this time it was Carleton's turn. Vanessa Germano (Ottawa, ON) picked up the loose ball and faked a shot to manoeuver past the defender. No. 7's dazzling cross into the box was pushed right past the keeper by Melanie Hoekstra (Bowmanville, ON) for a 2-1 lead.
Desperately needing a goal, the Varsity Blues had an impeccable chance to tie the game 2-2 in the 68th minute, but failed. The team's free kick was lobbed into the box and deflected to another athlete. Mintchev boldly charged at the feet of the Varsity Blue and made a brilliant save as the ball squabbled off to the side of the net.
After a couple-minute delay as Mintchev was visibly winded by her effort, Toronto tried again on a corner but their strong shot couldn't pierce the many Raven defenders. The 2-1 Carleton lead would hold from there as the second half finished without many promising opportunities for either team, despite more aggressive play than in the first.
"I thought our shape was much better today," said head coach Fred Juett, noting his team conceded fewer opportunities in their third and committed fewer turnovers this game than in previous. "Defensively, we were much better and we closed it out well – meaning, we secured the points. Hopefully that's a good sign moving forward."
The win completes the Ravens' 1-1 weekend and moves them to 2-2 on the season ahead of their first road game of the season against the Queen's Gaels in Kingston next Saturday.

Waterloo 6, Algoma 0
On Saturday afternoon, it was the Stephanie Penta (Kitchener/) show as the third year defended tallied four of Waterloo's six goals in a 6-0 shutout victory over the Thunderbirds.
What was even more impressive was that all of Penta's goals came in the second half, in a span of 38 minutes.
The Warriors got their other two goals off the foot of Ciara Dunne (Waterloo/) and Hannah Rempel (Waterloo/). Madison McDonald (Kitchener/) picked up the shutout in net making five stops.

Ryerson 2, Carleton 1
Ottawa, Ont. - First-year Victoria Watson (Scarborough, Ont.) scored two goals in the final seven minutes as the Ryerson Rams women's soccer team came from behind to defeat the Carleton Ravens 2-1 on Friday afternoon in Ottawa.
With the win, the Rams remain undefeated and improve to 2-0-1, while the Ravens drop to 1-2. The Ryerson victory is the first over the Ravens since October 23, 2010 and also marks the first time the Rams have ever won at Carleton.
The Ravens would get the first scoring chance of the contest when Vanessa Germano (Ottawa, Ont.) found herself alone in tight but she was denied on a nifty save from Rams keeper Brittney Clendenan (Ottawa, Ont.).
Ryerson ended the first half with sustained pressure. A late corner kick resulted in two quality chances for the Rams but they were unable to capitalize and the half ended at 0-0.
The Rams would carry that momentum into the second half. Ryerson made a number of halftime substitutions including Alessia Carvalho (Newmarket, Ont.), who made an immediate impact. She was sprung loose on a partial breakaway but her shot went high when she tried to chip it over the Carleton keeper. Minutes later, Soraya El-Houni's (Toronto) seeing-eye free kick beat the Raven's keeper but not the cross bar and the game remained scoreless.
The Ravens took a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute on a 25-yard strike to the top corner from Sarah Zutrauen (Ottawa, Ont.).
The game remained 1-0 until the 83rd minute when Watson netted her first OUA career goal to make it 1-1. Five minutes later she would get her second converting a lengthy run to make it 2-1.

Ottawa 1, Toronto 0
Coming into Friday afternoon's matchup with the Toronto Varsity Blues, the Gee-Gees wanted to get back into the win column after dropping their second regular season match to UOIT.
Toronto entered the game with a 2-0 record after wins at home over Nipissing and Laurentian to open their season. Despite the teams being ready to take the field for a 1 p.m. start, a scheduling mishap with referees pushed the game back three hours.
When play finally begun, the Gee-Gees went on the attack, outshooting Toronto 13-4 in the first half. One of those shots was a free kick bomb by third-year midfielder Katherine Bearne that snuck past the opposing keeper to give Ottawa the lead in the 20th minute.
"I thought we started really, really well," said Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson. "The team looked like they were ready to go right from the whistle, I thought we put pressure on them immediately."
In a tighter second half, the Gee-Gees were unable to capitalize again, but their defensive pressure led them to the win.
"We had a good week of training, I think we regrouped as a team and came out well today," said Bearne. "It felt good to score today, it's great to be on the field with my teammates. We had a good training camp, got to know all of the girls and now we're starting to mesh which is great."
"We're learning how to play faster and we did that in the first half, but we have to learn how to sustain that over the full 90 minutes," said Johnson.
