Another late scoring games keeps Gee-Gees win streak alive
The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees women's soccer team extended its winning streak on a rainy Saturday afternoon at home against the Ryerson Rams. Much like their previous game, the Gee-Gees had difficulty finding the back of the net until the very end.
The Rams defence stayed strong throughout the entire 90 minutes, giving everything they had to keep Ottawa from scoring. "They did well to hold us off defensively," commented Katherine Bearne, the Gee-Gees midfielder who scored the first goal of the game late into the second half. "It's tough for us trying to find ways to break it down but eventually we managed to do it." The Rams were very active, blocking many of the Gee-Gees shots on goal.
Ryerson's tough defence can be seen as a challenge for the Gee-Gees that allowed them to learn and to experience more on the field. "Last year, even the year before, we benefited from scoring early and scoring often," explained Ottawa head coach Steve Johnson. "It's going to be good for our team in order to understand and to be able to fight for 90 minutes."
Striker Sophie Curtis assisted both goals made by midfielders Katherine Bearne and Faythe Lou.

Ravens shutout Varsity Blues in 2-0 victory
OTTAWA, ON — The Ravens used two second-half goals to pick up full points in a 2-0 victory over the visiting Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday afternoon at MNP Park.
A pair of Carleton fifth-year seniors – Nicole Filipow (Edmonton, AB) and Amanda Ngwafusi (Ottawa, ON) – made the difference, as their individual markers came seven minutes apart to lift the Ravens to their second win of the young season.
Fourth-year goaltender Rada Mintchev (Ottawa, ON), who made 12 saves to collect her first shutout of the campaign, was kept busy early on as she turned away several Varsity Blues long-range efforts with ease.
Filipow almost made it 1-0 in the 30th minute when she was sprung on a breakaway in final third, but she misfired wide left, leaving the game goalless in the first half.
The Ravens appeared to take the lead just a few minutes later, when Filipow finished off a magical back heel pass from Sarah Zutrauen (Ottawa, ON) within the confines of the 18-yard box, but the side judge ruled the play offside, negating the highlight-reel goal.
Toronto countered and almost took the lead heading into the break, but Mintchev managed to reach back into her crease to scoop the loose ball off of the goal line. It remained a nil-nil contest after forty-five.
A determined Ravens team went goal hunting at the outset of the second half, and the team's industrious play would be rewarded.
Vanessa Germano (Ottawa, ON) was the catalyst on the opening goal of the game in the 50th minute, as her lob from the far side of the pitch proved to be a difficult catch for Toronto's keeper Tori Edgar. Nicole Filipow came flying through to tap the loose ball in for a 1-0 Ravens lead.
The advantage was doubled in the 57th minute, as Amanda Ngwafusi made something out of nothing with a supreme 30-yard rocket from the right flank that had eyes and found the top corner to give the Ravens a 2-0 cushion.
The Varsity Blues were shut down for the majority of the contest by an aggressive and intelligent Ravens defence which managed to blank a talented Toronto offence for the full ninety minutes. The V-Blues' Vanessa Bucci had a clear cut chance in the 82nd minute, but her effort sailed high and wide of the goal.
"At the end of the day, we are trying to get a result," said head coach Fred Juett. "Defensively, we were much better today, so I think we are starting to get a grasp of the system we are playing. With that being said, we still have some work to do in certain parts of the park."
The Ravens will close out the weekend home stand with a visit from the Ryerson Rams. The game can be watched on OUA.tv starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Golden Hawks pick up second straight win
HAMILTON (September 10, 2016) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's soccer kept their winning ways going Saturday afternoon at Ron Joyce Stadium against the McMaster Marauders as they came away with a critical 1-0 win in hostile territory.
The lone goal of the afternoon was scored by Maxine Murchie (Kitchener, Ont.) in the 33rd minute. Murchie has been on fire for the Hawks (2-1-2), with this being her fourth goal in five contests.
Other than that, the defence was solid from both sides in this match. The Hawks defence was particularly strong in the second half, holding firm against several waves of attack from the Marauders (0-3-2). Goalkeeper Ashley Almeida of Burlington, Ont., had another stout day in net, making six stops for the shutout.
Midfielders Natalie Barry (Toronto, Ont.) and Rachael Whiteley (Toronto, Ont.) both added two shots for the Hawks. The Marauders offence was paced by Hamilton Ont., native Maila Carboni and Jade Smith of Oshawa, Ont., who had four and three shot attemps respectively.
With the win, Laurier moves to eight points and a tie for third in the OUA West standings with the Windsor Lancers. The Hawks welcome the same Lancers (2-0-2) into town next Saturday as the first half of a home back-to-back. The rival Western Mustangs (3-0-2) visit University Stadium on Sunday on Laurier Student Dollar Day (tickets are available for $1.00 for Laurier students). Both games kickoff at 1:00 p.m.
Tickets for all games are always available online or at the University Stadium Box Office.
