The No. 5 nationally-ranked York University Lions women's soccer team picked up its fourth straight win to start the season on Wednesday night (Sept. 7) with a 2-1 victory over the McMaster Marauders at Ron Joyce Stadium.
The Lions are now 4-0-0 on the year and are the first team in the OUA West to record a fourth win on the season. The Marauders, meanwhile, are still looking for their first win after slipping to 0-2-2 with the loss.
Christina Morelli (Markham, Ont.) and Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.) continued their torrid scoring pace to start the season by picking up the game's two goals. Ghoneim stretched her lead atop the OUA scoring race with her eighth goal, while Morelli is now fourth in conference scoring with five goals.
The Lions got on the board in a hurry when Morelli found the back of the net just six minutes into the contest for a 1-0 lead.
The Marauders nearly found the equalizer in the 25th minute on a strong attempt by Maila Carboni, but her first shot was cleared off the line and the second was stopped by York goalkeeper Taylor Grant (Brampton, Ont.) to preserve the lead.
Like they had in the first half, the Lions scored again early in the second. Charlene D'Mello (Mississauga, Ont.) found Ghoneim alone in the box and Ghoneim made no mistake, tucking the ball inside the post to give her team a 2-0 lead.
Just before the final whistle, in injury time, Carboni was finally rewarded for her efforts with a goal but that was as close as the Marauders would get.
Grant finished with nine saves, including five on Carboni alone. Her counterpart, Cristina Abbatangelo, made six saves on the night.
There is little rest for the Lions as they will be back in action again on Thursday night (Sept. 8) when they welcome the Waterloo Warriors to Alumni Field for a 6pm kick-off.
