Gaels top Lakers, extend unbeaten streak
KINGSTON, Ont. (October 24, 2015) - The Queen's Gaels women's soccer team notched a significant victory on a windy Saturday afternoon in their next-to-last game of the season, defeating the Nipissing Lakers by a score of 3-1 and setting themselves up for a late playoff push with one game remaining in the regular season.
The Gaels (7-2-6) currently sit fifth in the OUA East division, but are just one point back of the fourth-place Toronto Varsity Blues and two points away from UOIT and Laurentian, who are tied for second-place.
A victory tomorrow afternoon against Laurentian would guarantee that the women leapfrog Toronto, who concluded their regular season on Saturday, as well as the Voyageurs and into third-place. Queen's could also overtake the Ridgebacks, whose final game is against the undefeated division-leading Ottawa, and into second-place behind the Gee-Gees.
A second-place finish clinches a first-round bye as well as a home game in the divisional semi-finals, while finishing third and fourth means the Gaels would host their divisional playoff match next week.
With the wind at their backs throughout the opening half, the Gaels controlled possession and the play for the first 45 minutes. After earning a couple of corner kicks just 10 minutes into the match, Tara Bartram headed home her fifth goal of the season off a strong cross from about 30 yards out on the right side of the field. The Vancouver native's header looped over the keeper into the top right-hand corner of the goal to put the home side up 1-0.
Queen's continued their offensive push in the first half, attempting numerous, threatening thru-balls that were either a bit long with the extra kick from the wind, or which were thwarted by the offside flag. The score, thus, remain unchanged heading into halftime.
Bartram looked to add to her goal total early in the second half, taking a pass deep in the Lakers box, but was unable to get both the initial shot and the rebound attempt passed Laker's keeper Kelly Dunk. Brittany Almeida (Kingston) also tried to double the Gael lead, but had her rocket of a shot ring off the crossbar.
The near-miss looked to prove costly, as moments later Selena Innamorati headed home the tying marker for the Lakers off a broken down corner kick, finding the low right corner from a sharp angle in the 74th minute.
The Gaels, however, quickly responded with the go-ahead goal just one minute later. Laura Callender (Ottawa) picked up her third goal of the season, and perhaps her most important of the fall, swinging the ball into the lower right corner off a ground-cross from the left side. North Vancouver, B.C. native Jessie de Boer picked up a late insurance marker in injury time to help the Gaels extend their unbeaten streak to seven games heading into their final regular season match on Sunday.

TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams women's soccer team played its final game of the season on Saturday, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Toronto Varsity Blues at Downsview Park.
In Saturday's game the visiting Varsity Blues opened the scoring in the 13th minute on a goal from Chelsea Cheung. Toronto doubled their lead just six minutes later as Natasha Klasios found the back of the net.
The scoring continued four minutes later when Maria Poveda (Mississauga, Ont.) got the Rams on the board with a great low strike into the bottom right corner to make it 2-1.
The next 63 minutes were scoreless until Toronto's Vanessa Bucci added an insurance marker in the 86th minute to round out the scoring.
The Rams finish the season with a 6-8-2 record which ties the program record for wins in a season (2014, 2011) and 20 total points (2007). Ryerson finishes the season before all OUA games are complete but as of Saturday the Rams end the season one point out of a playoff spot for the second straight season.
Prior to the game the Rams recognized seven players as their careers as Rams came to a close. Congratulations to Rebecca Arnott, Bronwyn Clarke, Jacquie de Grave, Katrina Gonyea, Alex Goudis, Nicole Haynes and Allie Pittiglio on their careers at Ryerson.

Two is enough for Ottawa at Trent
The Gee-Gees women's soccer team will have a chance to close out its regular season undefeated Sunday afternoon after topping the Trent Excalibur by a 2-0 score on Saturday. The no. 3 ranked squad in the CIS, Ottawa's record stands at 12-0-3.
Ottawa got its offence early on courtesy of a Victoria Marchand goal in the twelfth minute. That was quickly followed by Julia Francki's eleventh goal of the season at the 18 minute mark. Francki is tied for fifth in the CIS for goals scored this season.
With the points on the board, Ottawa settled into its defence and locked down the Excalibur.

Warriors close out season on winning note
The women's soccer finished off their 2015 campaign in style topping the Brock Badgers 2-1 in St. Catharines on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors capped off their season with a win in dramatic style as Rachel McInnis (London) found net in the 85th minute to lift the black and gold to the victory.
Also scoring for Waterloo was Kaitlyn Unger (Ajax) who fired home her team leading fourth goal in 21st minute. For Brock it was Laura Kirk who scored in the 72nd minute.
Waterloo's Kala Students was credited with the win in net, her fifth of the season.
Waterloo finished the season with a 5-10-1 record and will miss out on the post-season. It was an up and down season for the Warriors with a four game winning streak in the middle but they were unable to get the bounces against some of the tougher OUA teams.

No. 2 Lions dominiate Thunderbirds
The No. 2 nationally-ranked York University Lions women's soccer team cleaned up at York Stadium with a 10-0 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 24).
The match-up of the OUA West first-place Lions and last-place Thunderbirds saw plenty of goals for York and improved many individual records on the year. Even before the lopsided win, the Lions had already ensured themselves of first place in the OUA West and a guaranteed home quarter-final game next weekend.
Adding to the score line early in the game was Sydney Hoareau (Brampton, Ont.), who finished off a wide crossed ball from Charlene D'Mello (Brampton, Ont.) in the second minute to start the game off strong.
Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.) followed shortly after with two goals of her own. The first came off of a reverse pass from Hoareau and the second off of a threatening cross-pass from Sarah Wong (Scarborough, Ont.). Ghoneim also closed the first half with a hat trick from a goal off of a penalty shot, instigated by Christina Morelli (Markham, Ont.).
Starting off the second half with a 4-0 lead, the Lions headed into the next 45 minutes hungry to add more goals to the board. Colleen Beesley (Richmond Hill, Ont.) put two goals past the hands of Thunderbirds goalkeeper Enya Farlley with a hammered ball into the left corner, and a second off of a headed goal in the 57th minute.
Half-time substitute Jessica Tavernese (Richmond Hill, Ont.) also got on the scoreboard in the 49th minute after exploiting the left corner of the Thunderbirds' net. It was her first goal of the year that added a seventh goal to the Lions' lead.
In the 62nd minute Ghoneim was back at it again, grabbing her fourth goal of the game off of a one-on-one situation with the Thunderbirds' goalie. Then a few minutes later, rookie Kiyani Johnson (Markham, Ont.) grabbed the ninth goal of the game off of a scramble in the box.
Right before the final whistle, Beesley was able to squeeze in a hat trick, running through the ball off of a wide delivery from Morelli and bodying the ball into the net to finalize the 10-0 Lion win.
Overall, the Lions outshout the Thunderbirds 44-4 and York keeper Courtney Davis (Cambridge, Ont.) was able to grab her first individual shutout on the year.
The Lions will play the Thunderbirds again at home on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 25) to close off the season. Kick-off will be at 1pm.
