GUELPH, Ont. - A first half goal by Sonja Cvetkovic turned out to be the game winner as the Western Mustangs women's soccer team defeated the Guelph Gryphons 2-0 on Wednesday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
The win is Western's tenth of the season, and keeps the team in second place in the OUA West Division with a 10-1-3 record. Guelph moves to 6-7-0 on the year and are tied for fourth with the McMaster Marauders.
Cvetkovic's goal came 34 minutes into the game as she capitalized on a corner kick from Tianna Deluzio to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
Prior to the first Western goal, both teams put the ball in their opponent's end. The Mustangs had two scoring opportunities and the Gryphons had one, but all chances were denied by the teams' goalies.
The first thirty minutes went back and forth but once the Mustangs got ahead, the remainder of the half was spent in the Guelph end. Following her assist, Deluzio took three more corner kicks for the Mustangs, although none were converted into points on the scoreboard.
Heading into the second half, the Mustangs were determined to increase the gap between the two teams' scores. Just over ten minutes in, midfielder Grace Grafham passed the ball to fellow midfielder Jess Friend who netted goal number two for the purple and white.
Unfortunately for the home side that would be the final goal of the game with Western taking a 2-0 win.
Tori Edgar got the win in the Mustangs net, earning a shutout by stopping all three shots on goal. Elizabeth Brennan made three saves for the Gryphons in the loss.
Western returns to action this weekend when they head to Toronto on Sunday, October 18 to take on the York Lions in Western's second-last regular season game of the year. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
Sunday's game will be a return match after the two sides faced each other in a 1-1 draw at Mustangs Field back on September 27. With the Mustangs trailing the Lions by only one point in the OUA standings, the game could end up having major implications on playoff positioning with only one week left in the season.
