Almeida stymies Mustangs in Golden Hawks 1-0 victory
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 4, 2015) – The No. 3 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks rebounded from their first loss of the season with a 1-0 victory over the No. 6 Western Mustangs on Sunday afternoon at University Stadium.
After dropping their first game of the year on Thursday against the No. 4 York Lions, the Hawks responded with a gutsy effort on Sunday afternoon with a number of players playing despite battling injury.
With both teams fighting for top spot in the competitive OUA West division, Laurier and Western both came out firing from the opening whistle.
After the two teams had each traded chances early, it was the Hawks that broke through first. Forward Abbey Zamec of London, Ont., broke in down the wing and fired a perfect cross into the box, finding rookie Gagan Parhar of Surrey, B.C., who redirected it past Western keeper Tori Edgar of Oakville, Ont., to give Laurier a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.
That scoreline would hold up into the second half as Laurier's backline stood strong against a talented group of Mustangs. Each foray into Laurier's half was turned away by some great work by centrebacks Sarah Farano of Oakville, Ont., and Jacky Normandeau of Uxbridge, Ont.
As the game wore on, Western continued to push players forward and with 10 minutes to go before the final whistle, looked to have a chance to tie the game. A cross into the box found the head of Lauren Winquist of London, Ont., who sent it on goal but rookie keeper Ashley Almeida of Burlington, Ont., dove to her left and pushed the ball clear.
The Mustangs would get one last opportunity in the dying minutes of extra time off a corner kick Laurier's defence stood tall once again to preserve the victory.
Almeida would finish the game with nine saves, including seven in the second half, to pick up her seventh win of the season and third clean sheet.
The victory gives the Hawks a 9-1-1 record, and moves them into a tie with York for top spot in the division with 28 points. As for the Mustangs, they suffer their first loss of 2015 as their record falls to 7-1-3, and they sit one point back of both York and Laurier.
Up next for Laurier, they prepare for their rematch with the Lions as they head to Toronto on Thursday, October 8. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Pan Am Stadium on the campus of York University.

Warriors top Algoma 4-0 for fourth straight win
All good things come in threes right? Not exactly true for the Waterloo women's soccer team who picked up their fourth straight win topping the Algoma Thunderbirds 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in the Soo.
Waterloo defeated Algoma for the second straight day and improved to 4-6-1 in the process to move into fifth place in the OUA standings with 13 points on the season. The most impressive stat of their winning streak is that the Warriors haven't allowed a goal over the four game span.
Waterloo got an early goal in the match today with Krystna Brudnicki firing one home in the third minute. Brudnicki has been an effective part of Waterloo's offence since making the move from keeper to forward.
The Warriors added to their lead in the 26th minute as Eleanor Pineau (Campbellville) potted her first in the 26th minute. Before the opening half ran out, the Warriors put up one more on the scoreboard as Kaitlyn Unger (Ajax) netter her second of the season.
Melanie Mitchell (Glen Morris) added Waterloo's fourth goal in the 68th minute and Kala Studens (Sault Ste. Marie) did the rest between the pipes to record her fourth straight shutout.
Waterloo will look to extend their winning streak to five next Friday when they host Western at Warrior Field. Kickoff is set for 2pm.

Rams earn 1-0 victory against Trent
PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams women's soccer team earned an important 1-0 victory over the Trent Excalibur on Sunday afternoon in Peterborough.
Sophomore midfielder Val Muniz (Toronto) provided the game's only goal when she struck from a free kick in the 32nd minute.
Sunday marked just the second time the Excalibur have been shut out this season, and it was a team effort by the Rams that held the cleansheet intact. Keeper Brittney Clendenan (Ottawa, Ont.) did her part in net while defender Hanna Park (Markham, Ont.) helped out by clearing a ball off the goal line to prevent a goal.
The Rams improve to 3-5-2 on the season to keep pace in the hunt for the final playoff position. Ryerson currently sits one point out of the seventh and final postseason position. Trent fell to 0-9-0 with the loss.
Ryerson is back in action next weekend when they travel to Ottawa to take on the Gee-Gees on Saturday, October 10 and the Carleton Ravens on Sunday, October 11. Both games will kick off at 1:00 p.m.

Lions stay undefeated with win over Gryphons
The No. 4 nationally-ranked York University Lions women's soccer team added another win to its unbeaten record this season with a 2-0 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 4).
With the win, the Lions hold an OUA-best 9-0-1 record and are now the only team in the OUA West Division with an undefeated record on the season.
Opening the game with clinical possessive play that kept the Gryphons chasing, the Lions were dominant in every area of the pitch. The creativity paid off in the 20th minute when Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.) released Sarah Wong (Scarborough, Ont.) into the technical area to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead. Ghoneim flicked the ball into the path of Wong's darting run past the Gryphons' back four, which gave Wong enough time to tuck the ball into the near post.
The Lions were also close to adding another goal to the scoreboard in the 40th minute when Charlene D'Mello (Brampton, Ont.) rang the crossbar off of a long shot on goal to end the half off strong.
Heading into the second half, the Lions continued to find success going forward and were able to grab their second goal of the game in the 63rd minute. Thanks to the patience and dribbling ability of Shannon Wood (Brampton, Ont.), Ghoniem found herself on the end Wood's pass and nailed the ball into the back of the net.
The Lions finished the game with 13 shots as opposed to the Gryphons, who only tallied one shot off.
Next up, the Lions will be back on home turf to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks on Thursday (Oct. 8) in another nationally-ranked match-up. The game will be played at the brand new York Lions Stadium, marking the first ever York event in the facility. Kick-off is set for 6pm.

Gaels concede a last minute goal to draw 1-1 against Carleton
KINGSTON, Ont. (October 4, 2015) - The Gaels women's soccer team (4-2-5) concedes a last minute goal to draw 1-1 against the Carleton Ravens (3-4-3).
The Gaels didn't take long to get on the score sheet Sunday afternoon when Tianna Lombardo (Calgary) scored the opening goal from a strike from the top of the 18 yard box in the first minute for the game. The game settled down after the early go ahead goal from the Gaels with both teams playing pressuring back and fourth. Throughout the first half Queen's controlled most of the possession. The Gaels almost doubled their lead in the 30th minute with another quality scoring chance by Lombardo from a strike inside the 18 yard box.
The second half saw both teams playing a strong defensive game early on. The Carleton's offence began to get pressure in the middle of the second half but the Gaels defensive tandem of Micah Vermeer (Grimsby, Ont.) and Kyra Steer (South Surrey) prevented any quality chances on net. Queen's goalkeeper Madison Tyrell (White Rock) made a key save in the 70th minute off a strike in the 18 yard box. The Gaels almost put the game out of reach in the 75th minute when substitute Rachel Radu (Ottawa) crossed a ball into the 6 yard box right onto Jenny Wolever's (Toronto) foot but the shot went over the net. That miss came back to hurt the Gaels late in the game when Carleton's forward Abby Nicastro was able to sneak through the Gaels defence and dribble around Tyrell to net the game-tieing goal in the 91st minute.

Gee-Gees Find Scoring Touch, Beat RMC 6-0
After two straight games without a goal, Pilar Khoury and the uOttawa Gee-Gees were finally able to put the ball in the back of the net, as Ottawa beat RMC 6-0 on Sunday afternoon.
"It was a much better performance," Head Coach Steve Johnson said after the game.
The Gee-Gees wasted little time getting on the board and breaking their two game scoreless streak. With a burst of energy Thea Noury broke in alone in the first minute, firing a low strike that beat RMC's Alex Hogg to the left side, giving the Gee-Gees an early 1-0 lead.
The Gee-Gees continued to apply pressure and shots, but had little success in the first half. Khoury would have an excellent chance in the 30th minute, but Hogg got a hand on her strike from point blank range. Hogg made several excellent saves to keep her team in the game, including 14 in the first half alone.
Julia Francki appeared to give the Gee-Gees a 2-0 lead in the 44th minute, but her goal was reversed on an offside call.
Persistence and pressure paid off, however, as the floodgates opened wide for the Gee-Gees in the second half. Khoury finally found that back of the end, scoring on a cross feed from Delaney Rickert-Hall in the 49th minute. The Gee-Gees striker would score again off a rebound in the 65th minute.
Faythe Lou capitalized for a goal of her own on an open net rebound in the 60th minute.
Anika Littlemore sealed the game for the Gee-Gees when she connected on a penalty kick that resulted from a foul in the box in the 70th minute.
Kayla Da Costa had by far the prettiest goal of the afternoon. Da Costa's right corner kick in the 77th minute had a beautiful bend that fooled the RMC keeper and found its way to the far left side of the net.
When asked about the difference between the first and second half, Johnson said that his team "played much more aggressive." The Gee-Gees had several more opportunities within the 18 yard box in the second half, which lead to many more scoring opportunities that resulted in goals.
Cynthia Leblanc played 65 minutes for the win, stopping two shots. Rosalie Bouchard-Guerin finished the shutout with two saves of her own. Hogg finished a busy afternoon with 26 saves in the loss for RMC.
The Gee-Gees' record improves to 7-0-3, while RMC falls to 1-8-0 on the season.
The Gee-Gees will remain at home next weekend when they host two teams from the Greater Toronto Area. Ryerson University will visit on October 10, followed by the University of Toronto on October 11. Both games are scheduled for a 1 pm kickoff at Matt Anthony Field.
