Western stays undefeated with 2-1 win over McMaster
LONDON, Ont. – Tianna Deluzio scored one goal and assisted on another to help the Mustangs defeat the McMaster Marauders 2-1 on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Field.
"I'm happy with the win," said Western head coach Martin Painter. "I think as the second half went on, McMaster put us under a bit of pressure. But fortunately we were able to hold on for the win. It was a good performance, you know, tough conditions. A lot of positives to take from the game and we're happy with the three points."
The win moves Western into first place in the OUA West Division with an 8-0-3 record. The Mustangs 27 points are two ahead of both the Laurier Golden Hawks and York Lions however, both teams have games in hand on the Mustangs. The Marauders occupy seventh place on the West Division standings with a 2-5-3 record following today's game.
At the 21-minute mark Deluzio dropped the ball right behind the McMaster defence where Lauren Winquist was able to take advantage, finding the back of the Marauders net for the first goal of the game.
McMaster didn't wait long to respond, as Alexandra Riganelli tied the game at 1-1 less than five minutes after Winquist's opening strike.
Much to the delight of the Mustangs fans in attendance Deluzio was at it again late in the first half, this time scoring a goal of her own to give the home side a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
"We just played it back, and I don't think we played it out quick enough, and nobody covered fast enough," said Mustang defender Sabrina De Nard. "They were pressuring really high, and nobody was back to cover quick enough."
Tori Edgar came into the game for the second half, relieving starting keeper Chelsea Schmidt, as the rain only intensified. Despite the poor conditions the Mustangs defence held strong, preventing McMaster from getting a single shot on target and preserving the 2-1 win.
"We have to learn to play with [poor weather] because if we go to any of the playoffs or nationals, it gets colder. So we have to just learn to deal with that," said De Nard when asked about playing in inclement weather.
The Mustangs head to Waterloo tomorrow for their twelfth game of the season to face the Laurier Golden Hawks. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at University Stadium.

OSHAWA, Ont. – It may be a new month but it was the same result for the UOIT women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon. For their 4th straight game the Ridgebacks earned a 1-0 victory, this time beating Ryerson on home turf.
UOIT outplayed Ryerson in the opening stages of the game but goalkeeper Brittney Clendenan came up with a number of key saves, including a diving stop off the foot of Jessica Mithrush (Thunder Bay, Ont.) from just outside the box.
The Ridgebacks were finally rewarded for their strong play just before halftime as Shynice Williams (Mississauga, Ont.) slipped between the Ryerson defenders and chipped it by the charging goalkeeper.
UOIT's defence stood strong in the second half as Ryerson failed to record a shot on target.

Ravens complete 4-0 shutout of Paladins
(KINGSTON, ON) — Carleton (3-4-2) played its most complete game of the season in a triumphant 4-0 result over the RMC Paladins (1-7) on Saturday afternoon.
Carleton dominated possession over the Paladins throughout the match as they managed to post their second highest goal output of the season with 4 goals.
RMC kept the Ravens grounded until the 25th minute when 4th-year midfielder Tina Lacava (Markham, ON) received a delightful lob pass through the defence from Adrianna Ruggiero (Markham, ON) and tucked the ball in behind the keeper for a 1-0 lead.
Once Lacava put the Ravens on the scoresheet, the flood gates opened. In the 29th minute, Adrianna Ruggiero put home a rebound off of an Abby Nicastro (Ottawa, ON) shot from the left side to establish a two-goal advantage for the Ravens. Shortly after in the 32nd minute, Carleton's co-captain Veronica Mazzella (Sudbury, ON) drilled a hard shot from 25-yards out which found the bottom left corner to increase the Ravens' stranglehold to three goals at halftime.
In the 90th minute, Ravens 1st-year forward Tori MacFarlane (Kars, ON) scored her third goal of the season when she broke in alone before maneuvering around the keeper for the Ravens' final tally of the day.
Ravens 4th-year goalie Elizabeth MacDougall (Carleton Place, ON) backstopped her side to victory with her third shutout of 2015. She made five saves for the win.
The Ravens will look to complete a weekend sweep in Kingston against the Queen's Gaels tomorrow. Carleton won 3-2 over Queen's in its season opener back in August.
