Carleton contains No. 2 Gee-Gees in 0-0 draw
(OTTAWA, ON) — Carleton held the nation's #2 ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees to a scoreless tie on Saturday afternoon at MNP Park.
It was an eventful first half which saw action on both sides of the pitch. Ravens goalkeeper Elizabeth MacDougall (Carleton Place, ON) was a wall in the back as she stoned several close range attempts from the dangerous Gee-Gees offence. Carleton's co-captain Sarah Royer (Ottawa, ON) had the best chance of the first forty-five when she connected on a Veronica Mazzella (Ottawa, ON) lob into the area, but her strike curved wide right of the goal. Both universities had an equal number of opportunities in the opening half with five shots a piece.
Early in the second half, the Gee-Gees were awarded a penalty shot when a Ravens defender pulled down an attacking Ottawa player at the back post. 2014 OUA East MVP Pilar Khoury of the Gee-Gees stepped up to the spot looking to give her side the lead, but MacDougall dove low and to the right to make a fantastic save.
Later in the second, Ottawa's Thea Nour made an aggressive run past several Ravens defenders before centering the ball into the box where the Ravens' goalkeeper MacDougall bravely dove into two oncoming Gee-Gees forwards who slammed into her as she lunged to make another incredible save.
In the final minutes, Carleton swarmed the Gee-Gees' 18-yard box and belted several shots towards goal, but were unable to rise to the occasion to steal a late win.
The Ravens gain a vital point in the draw with Ottawa, which will certainly help Carleton's chances at making the OUA playoffs. This game marked only the second occasion this season that Ottawa did not pick up full points in a regular season game.
Elizabeth MacDougall came up big throughout the game and delivered one of her top performances of the season. Head coach Raz El-Asmar was happy about her contribution as well as the team's overall effort.
"Liz kept us the game today. She had the big penalty save as well as the one from the corner kick in the first. She played an incredible match overall."
"Overall, that was probably our best games of the season," added El-Asmar. "The girls were ready all week for this game. I was very happy with our possession and the transition from defence to offence was very good."

Vees take Round One over Lakers
A late surge proved to be too much for the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team Saturday afternoon, as they fell to their northern neighbours, the Laurentian Voyageurs.
Despite having a 2-1 lead early in the second half, the Vees stormed back with four straight goals to claim the 5-2 win over Nipissing.
Down 1-0, Lakers veteran Katie Koenjer tied the game with a goal in the 17th minute.
The Lakers would grab the lead less than 10 minutes into the second half as Rachel Haine found the back of the net to make it 2-1.
The goal woke up the Vees, however, as they scored four times in less than 30 minutes, including a hat-trick by Sarah Sanford, to take the three points.
Carlee Bennard took the loss in net.
Nipissing (4-4-1) is 3-2 in their past five and will look to get some revenge this week when the teams will hit the field for the rematch in North Bay Wednesday evening at 5 p.m.

Ridgebacks pick up three big points in Kingston
KINGSTON, Ont. – All four games in September for the UOIT women's soccer team have finished in a 1-0 result. Fortunately for the Ridgebacks, three of those games have ended up in their favour.
On Saturday in Kingston, the Ridgebacks blanked Queen's with Helen Frampton (Toronto, Ont.) making five saves to record her fourth shutout of the season. UOIT's defence has been outstanding having allowed a league low three goals against this year.
Alessia Mattucci (Thornhill, Ont.) scored her first goal as a Ridgeback just ten minutes into the game, which turned out to be the game winner.
Shots on target ended up 6-5 in favour of the Ridgebacks.
UOIT (4-2-0) moves into a tie for fifth place in the OUA eastern conference with the Gaels (3-2-3) but have two games in hand. The Ridgebacks have only played six games where all four teams ahead of them have either played eight or nine.
UOIT will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they head across town to play the RMC Paladins. RMC is 1-5-0 this year as they picked up their first win on Saturday against Trent.

Lancers shut out by No. 5 Lions
The Lancer women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the #5 York Lions on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
With the loss, Windsor falls to 4-6 on the season while the nationally ranked Lions remain undefeated with a 7-0 record.
Both teams were evenly matched playing a man to man defense which prevented either team from earning many scoring opportunities.
In the 41st minute of the first half, York's Nour Gheneim brought the ball up the side of the pitch and cuts across into the goalie box where she connected with a wide-open Sydney Hoaurau whose shot finds the back of the Windsor net.
The Lancers picked up their intensity in the second half pushing for the equalizer, however York stayed strong to prevent any Windsor advancements.
Windsor will now host the McMaster Marauders on Sunday October 4th at 1:00pm at Alumni Field as part of Alumni Weekend festivities.
