If the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team was feeling down about a tough one goal loss Saturday, it sure didn't show Sunday.
The Lakers, coming off a 2-1 loss to Ottawa, bounced back in a big way, defeating the Carleton Ravens 2-0 at the Education Centre Field.
The Lakers put together a great effort in every facet of the game – surrendering very few chances, creating a tonne of their own and closing down the attacking Ravens quickly and efficiently.
Defensively and in goal, the Lakers were rock solid. Carlee Bennard earned the clean sheet and while she wasn't very busy, she was good when she had to be.
Offensively, the Lakers continued to create a number of chances and found the back of the net in the 15 th minute when Emma Persi tapped in a ball that was sitting on the goal line.
The tally was Persi's second of the season.
The Lakers padded their lead early in the second half when Andrea Young, who made a slick move around the defender and the goalie, firing home her first OUA goal.
While the Ravens attempted to mount a comeback, Nipissing tightened up defensively and shut things down for the final 30 minutes to secure the three points.
Winners of three of their last four, the Lakers (4-3-1) are currently tied for third place with their northern rivals, the Laurentian Voyageurs (4-3-1), who they will face in a home-and-home coming up.
The first matchup of the two teams is Saturday in Sudbury, before the teams play the return game in North Bay on Sept. 30

The Laurentian Voyageurs women's soccer team was looking to extend their winning ways on Sunday when the hosted the #2 Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Gee-Gees pace and quality came through in the end as they came away with a 4-1 win.
The first half belonged to the Gee-Gees as they controlled much of play in the opening 45 minutes. They struck first in the 30th minute as Pilar Khoury had strong run down the wing before putting a cross into the box that was met by Julia Franki who one-touched it into the far corner. The Gee-Gees struck again in the 39th minute as Khoury was on the receiving end of a corner kick and slipped it short side to push their lead to 2-0.
The second half mirrored the first as Ottawa continued with their relentless pressure, capitalizing on a corner kick early in the half before Khoury tallied her second of the game moments later, sliding the ball into corner past an outstretched Dina Mandolesi. The Voyageurs would get one back in stoppage time as Sarah Sanford converted a penalty but in the end it was the Gee-Gees leaving town with the 4-1 victory.
The Voyageurs now get set for a home and home with their northern rival, the Nipissing Lakers. The action begins next Saturday at home with a 12pm kickoff.

Rams shut out in 3-0 loss to Queen's
TORONTO - In a game that was closer than the score line indicated, the Ryerson Rams fell 3-0 to the Queen's Gaels on Sunday afternoon at Downsview park.
The visiting Gaels wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard first. In the second minute of the game, Queen's forward Jenny Wolever struck the ball from the left side of the penalty box with a thundering left foot. The shot found the top corner, beyond the reach of goalkeeper Alex Armstrong (Toronto).
The Queen's back line played a composed keep a way from Ryerson, passing the ball from left to right, before initiating attacks through right back Bella Jacot. The Gaels offense was dynamite early on, with Tara Bartram positioning herself strongly to hold the ball for Wolever's calculated runs down the left wing.
As the half wore on, the Rams found their defensive composure with Katherine Sollbach (Burlington, Ont.) and Bernadette Francisci (Toronto) combining to neutralize Woelver. Ryerson's Alessia Carvalho (Newmarket, Ont.) and Maria Poveda (Mississauga, Ont.) applied pressure to take advantage of some Gaels overpassing in the defensive backfield, resulting in convertible shots on goal for both players.
Despite positive play for much of the first half, the Rams conceded an unfortunate goal in the 36th minute when the ball bounced around several times in the six yard box before being nudged in by Queen's Laura Callender.
Down at the half 2-0, the Rams attempted to match the physicality of Queen's in an effort to claw their way on to the score sheet. The approach was working as the Rams had several shots on goal, while Armstrong was making opportune saves to deny the Gaels.
In the 55th minute, the Gaels broke through for a decisive third goal. With her teammates pushing play down the right wing, an unmarked Wolever found herself in the left penalty box in poaching position. Receiving a cross in, she headed the ball far post for the third and final goal of the game.
Ryerson continued to play the Gaels tough for the duration of the game, but the versatile subs that Queen's brought in were able to hold on for the clean sheet.
With the win, Queen's improves to 3-1-3. Despite the disappointing loss, which drops them to 2-4-2, the Rams once again displayed a trademark competitiveness during a rebuilding season. Speaking shortly after the loss, midfielder Niki Paiva (Waterloo, ON), said "This is a rebuilding year, so we're already going past what we expected, so I think now we've just got to build that chemistry a little more both attacking and defensively". She was also complementary of her teammate's preparation, noting that their practices allowed them to be unfazed by Queen's combination of physicality and skill on the ball.
Ryerson had six shots on goals versus 11 for Queen's. Armstrong had nine saves, while Queen's Madison Tyrell had three saves. There were no cards in the game.
The Rams next game is on October 3rd at UOIT (3-2), where they will get an opportunity to build on the lessons learned in this matchup.

A shutout against Brock help the Mustangs remain in top spot
LONDON, Ont. - Six separate Mustangs contributed goals on Sunday afternoon to secure the women's soccer team a big 7-0 win against the Brock Badgers at Mustang Field.
"I thought today our energy was better, our determination was better," said head coach Martin Painter when comparing the win to the 2-2 tie that happened the day before. "We played with a little chip on our shoulder. Just harder working, more physical, louder, just brought a different mentality to the game."
The game marks the team's sixth win of the season and keeps the Mustangs at the top of the OUA West rankings. The Badgers now have a record of 0-7-1 and are sitting in eighth place.
The game was a true team effort for the purple and white. The mustangs continuously found the back of the net with six different goal scorers. Lauren Winquist, Amanda Boyle, Jenna White, Paige Howard, and Julia Crnjac each earned one goal, and striker Sarah Deakin scored two.
Goal scoring started early for the home team, with just two minutes into the game, Boyle fed the ball to Winquist who put the ball past Brock keeper Larissa Aiken. The duo of Boyle and Winquist struck again just seven minutes later, resulting in Boyle finding the back of the net.
Following the initial two goals, multiple accounts of rough play for Brock's Natasha Susman led to two yellow cards, equaling a red card and game ejection. The red card also resulted in a penalty shot for Western, which was taken by White. The shot was placed smoothly into the bottom left corner of the net.
With a three goal lead heading into the second half, Coach Painter decided to make a few substitutions.
"We have a very strong bench and we've got some girls who've been training very well, and we wanted to give them the opportunity. So in the second half they came in and showed what the can do which is good."
The new line up kept the goals coming, racking up four more in the final 45 minutes. Deakin scored the first and last goals of the half, and commented on the experience, "I haven't had a chance to play yet, so I knew that it was my opportunity to show what I could do on the field. I just did what I had to do and made the right plays and got it done."
The Mustangs hope to continue their winning streak in a few days when they hit Mustangs Field again on Wednesday, September 23 to face the Windsor Lancers at 6PM.
