Boyle scores late to give Western a 2-2 tie against Golden Hawks
LONDON, Ont.- Striker Amanda Boyle potted a goal seconds before the final whistle on Saturday afternoon to help Western to a 2-2 tie against the Laurier Golden Hawks at Mustang Field.
The game marks the first tie for both teams, giving Western and Laurier records of 4-0-1 and 3-0-1, respectively.
"Our paths will probably cross in the future. It was the first real tough game we had," said Western head coach Martin Painter. "Laurier's attacking players are so dangerous, that if you lose concentration, they can punish you. And that happened to us. Just means we need to tighten things up a little bit."
After a couple of mistakes that the Golden Hawks capitalized on, the score was 2-1 for the away team. With added time due to injuries, Boyle stepped up for the Mustangs. She passed by a couple of Laurier defenders and took a long shot that hit the back of the net.
Boyle's goal was not the first time the Mustangs made a comeback against the Golden Hawks, either.
Despite Western having much of the possession of the ball, Laurier's Emily Brown was able to get a point for the away team at the end of the first half. Behind by one heading into the next 45 minutes, the Mustangs didn't give up. Five minutes in, Western midfielder Stephanie Di Tella took a corner kick that unexpectedly found its way into the Laurier net, tying up the score.
To break the tie, Laurier midfielder Katie Bishop made her way into the Mustang end to turn the game into a 2-1 lead for the Golden Hawks. The Mustangs stayed calm though, and due to quality passing, good communication, and plenty of character, the ladies fought back.
"We played really well," said Grace Grafham post-game. "We had possession most of the game, gave away an unlucky goal, but we showed well in the fact that we were able to come back and tie up the game in the end."
The Mustangs have less than 24 hours before their next game against the Waterloo Warriors. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on September 13 at Mustang Field.

Blues upset No. 9 ranked Voyageurs on the road
First-year midfielder Natasha Klasios scored in the 77th minute to help the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the No. 9 Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday, September 12 in Sudbury.
With the win, the Blues improve to 3-0-1, remaining undefeated and moving into first place in the OUA East division.
Klasios completed a nice give and go with Ally Rigby to find the back of the net.
"The ball was in the air and I controlled it and gave it to Ally and saw some space open up," said the first-year life science major from Unionville, Ont. "She gave it back to me and I just put my foot through it and it hit the target. We were so pumped. The next thing I recall was being crushed by the team."
Blues goalkeeper Sara Petrucci made 11 saves to earn the shut out victory.
"I think we were around a 7 out of 10 today," commented Petrucci after the game. "We kept the ball in key areas but we can always improve on our defensive shape."
The Varsity Blues are back at it tomorrow as they head to North Bay, Ont., to take on the Nipissing Lakers (1-2-1). Game time is set for 12 p.m.

Eight Gaels combine for 10 goals in 10-0 win over RMC
KINGSTON, Ont. (September 12, 2015) - The Queen's Gaels (1-1-3) exploded on offence with a 10-0 win over cross-town rivals the RMC Paladins (0-3) at RMC. Jenny Wolever (Toronto) and Tara Bartram (Vancouver) each scored a pair of goals to pace the Gaels in the victory.
Coming into the game having scored just four times in four games Queen's got off to a great start in the first half. Wolever got things going for Queen's scoring twice early, her first and second career CIS goals, putting Queen's ahead 2-0. Laura Callender (Ottawa), Tianna Lombardo (Calgary) and Rachel Radu (Ottawa) all tallied next for the Gaels before Bartram closed out the half with a pair of goals of her own to put Queen's in front 7-0 at halftime.
The second half began with more offensive production from Queen's as 2014 CIS All-Canadian Jessie de Boer (North Vancouver, B.C.) scored her second of the season which was followed by goals from Brittany Almeida (Kingston, Ont.) and Claudia Glasspoole (Calgary) to bring the game to a final of 10-0.
Michaila Frawley (Victoria) got the start for Queen's and made two saves for the clean sheet, her second in as many games, while RMC keeper Alexandria Hogg stopped eight of the 18 shots fired her way.

Lopoyda's goal in stoppage time lifts Gryphons past Badgers
Guelph, ON – Third year striker Krista Lopoyda (Niagara Falls, ON) scored the match-winning goal in stoppage time to give the Gryphons a thrilling 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Brock on Saturday afternoon at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. With the victory the Gryphons improve to 4-1-0 while the Badgers fall to 0-5-0.
Midway through a very slow first half, Brock sophomore Olivia Shramowsky scored her first goal of the season to give the Badgers the early lead. In the 21st minute, the ball came to her at the top of the box and on her first touch, Shramowsky sent a curving volley into the bottom right corner of the net. Brock took the 1-0 lead into the half.
In the second half, Gryphon captain Courtney Whiteside (Guelph, ON) came agonizingly close to equalizing. From the left side of the area, Whiteside sent a shot destined for the top right corner, requiring a tremendous sprawling save from Brock's freshman goalie, Lauren MacCulloch, who did well to keep it out. The Gryphons were in control after that opportunity. Not soon after, a beautiful cross from defender, Bianca Ferlisi (Woodbridge, ON) from the left side of the pitch landed on the foot of Sydney Holden (Peterborough, ON) inside the six-yard box. Holden showed great skill to volley the ball over the keeper for her first goal of the campaign. The goal was a just reward for Holden who had the Badger defence on their heels the entire game with her speed, ball handling and thought process. Holden was forcing corners throughout the game and even drew a free kick just outside the box after a marvelous one-on-one trickery.
The game looked to be headed for a tie until Gryphons leading scorer Krista Lopoyda delivered in stoppage time. After spotting the Brock keeper well off her line, Lopoyda was able to unleash a strike from well over 30-yards out. The ball sailed past the Brock keeper and into the back of the net to give the Gryphons a dramatic 2-1 victory at the death. For Lopoyda, it marked the latest tally in what has been an impressive start to the season as she now has three goals in five games. Other stand out performers for the Gryphons on the day were second year defender Stephanie Moore (Mississauga, ON) rookie defender Alexis Adduono (Thunder Bay, ON). Overall, it was a great team effort from the Gryphons who will look to carry the momentum in to their match on Sunday afternoon in York. The Gryphons face the undefeated Lions (4-0-0) at 1pm on Sunday. The game can be seen live online at OUA.tv.

On a wet and soggy Saturday afternoon, the uOttawa Gee-Gees exploded for seven goals in the second half, routing the Trent Excalibur 9-1. Théa Nour scored four goals, all of them in the last 45 minutes in front of a Gee-Gees home crowd at Matt Anthony Field. Ottawa moves to 4-0-1 on the season, while Trent falls to 0-3-0.
"Obviously it is more difficult to play in wet weather," Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson said after the match, "But I thought we played very well."
The Gee-Gees wasted little time early on, as Pilar Khoury found herself on a breakaway just one minute into the game. Khoury picked the far low corner of the net, beating Trent keeper Brandi Riggs to give Ottawa the 1-0 lead. Delaney Rickert-Hall doubled the Gee-Gees lead with a tally of her own in the seventh minute.
The weather wrecked havoc on both teams and the officials. There were several instances of confusion caused by the poor conditions. The wet field made crisp, long passes difficult. "When it's wet, you have to play a foot game," Johnson explained, "You can't be passing long passes as you could see with the ball bouncing so much." The Gee-Gees had early two goals called back on questionable offside calls.
The Gee-Gees simplified their game in the second half, and it paid off. Théa Nour burst down the wing in the 46th minute, beating Riggs to give the Gee-Gees a 3-0 lead.
The floodgates opened for the Gee-Gees and Nour for the rest of the half. Nour added goals in the 57th, 63rd, and 81st minutes. She took advantage of two misplays by the Trent keeper, leading to easy open net scores that padded her total. Hannah Landry, Brooklyn McAlear and Faythe Lou all contributed with goals of their own, as the Gee-Gees peppered Riggs with 17 shots on net.
Haley Gills scored the lone goal for the Excalibur, spoiling the Gee-Gees' shutout bid at the 72nd minute.
Riggs finished with six saves in the loss. The Gee-Gees' Rosalie Bouchard-Guerin made two saves in the first half, while Melissa Pésant finished the game with five saves of her own.
The Gee-Gees return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host the UOIT Ridgebacks at Matt Anthony Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Ridgebacks score late to earn three points
OSHAWA, Ont. – Tyra Gordon picked a great time to score her first career OUA goal as she netted the game winner in the late stages of UOIT's 1-0 victory over the Carleton Ravens Saturday in Ottawa.
After being substituted back onto the field by head coach Peyvand Mossavat, Gordon (Ajax, Ont.) managed to find the loose ball at the side of the net in the 80th minute. Gordon got control, turned and fired the ball through Carleton's defence and goalkeeper for the game's lone goal.
Up until that point, the Raven defenders set up a wall, limiting the Ridgebacks scoring opportunities. Cassandra Sribny (Pickering, Ont.) and Shynice Williams (Mississauga, Ont.) attempted to find a crease in the defence but could not slip through.
Making her third start in net, Hellen Frampton (Toronto, Ont.) wasn't too busy throughout the afternoon as she made only two saves for her second shutout of the season.
Carleton, who began the season with a 3-2 win over Queen's, has failed to score in their last three games.
UOIT will have a tough test on Sunday afternoon when they face the No. 3 ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees. The teams split their season series one year ago, each winning on home turf.
Game time at Matt Anthony Field is 1 p.m.
