Lyon powers Golden Hawks past Warriors 3-1 in Battle of Waterloo
The Warriors gave cross-town rivals, Laurier all they could handle in the first battle of Waterloo of 2015 but came up short in a 3-1 loss. It was Waterloo's home opener and the black and gold showed signs of a positive season against the No. 6 team in the country.
Nicole Lyon scored the opening goal in the 10th minute and provided the insurance marker at the 51st minute to lead her squad to victory. The winning goal was provided off the foot of Gagan Pahar at the 22nd minute mark.
The Hawks open up their 2015 campaign with 3 straight wins while the black and gold have now lost two straight and are 0-2-1 on the season.
Waterloo was heavily outplayed in the early going of the opening half but shifted the momentum late with a nice strike into the top right corner by Shannon Breit (Toronto), her first as a Warrior.
Down 2-1 going into the second half Waterloo continued to pressure the Hawks but could not get the quality chances they were looking for. Time would run out on the Warriors and the Hawks would take the match 3-1.
Kala Studens (Sault Ste. Marie) was given the loss giving up two goals while rookie keeper Krystyna Brudnicki (Mississauga) was solid in relief allowing just one. Laurier's Ashley Almeida picked up her first win of the season for the Hawks.
Waterloo will be back at it tomorrow at 1pm against Guelph on Warrior Field once again.

Ravens women's soccer downed 1-0 by Laurentian
(Ottawa, ON) – A first half tally from the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs was enough to hold off an offensively-challenged Carleton team by a final score of 1-0 at MNP Park on Saturday afternoon. For the second straight game this weekend, a goal was hard to come by as the women's soccer team struggled up front .
Laurentian came into this game leading the OUA East standings and they proved their worth as contenders for the division this season.
The Ravens nearly succumbed to the Voyageurs' pressure in the first five minutes, as Laurentian appeared to go up 1-0 on a fast break, but an official's offside call saved the Ravens from being down early on.
Carleton had barely recovered from the close call before the Voyageurs began to press once more. Laurentian opened the game's scoring when a somewhat innocent looking 40-yard free kick from Amy Fitzgerald was misread by goalkeeper Rada Mintchev, who made a last ditch dive to keep it out, but the ball deflected off of the post and into the back of the net.
In first half stoppage time, the Ravens had several opportunities to tie the game, but limped into halftime down 1-0.
Ravens winger Tori MacFarlane saw straight red in the 60th minute when she lunged out for a loose ball, but clipped a Voyageurs player instead, leaving Carleton with 10 players for the remaining 30 minutes of the game.
However, Carleton remained competitive and the team had its chances to tie. An offside call negated a Tina Lacava goal and a miscue from the the Voyageurs' goalie almost gave Vanessa Germano an unlikely equalizer from a shot on the end line.
Carleton's lack of firepower up front proved costly as the Voyageurs would go on to win the game 1-0.
The team produced zero goals over a two-game stretch this weekend against teams that they have fared well against in the past.

The Ottawa Gee-Gees women's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2015 OUA regular season at home on Saturday afternoon, earning a 1-0 victory over the Nipissing Lakers to improve to 1-0-1 on the season. Team captain Julia Francki scored the game's lone goal at the 30 minute mark, capitalizing on a great set up from 2014 OUA Player of the Year Pilar Khoury.
Francki powered a shot from close range after accepting a feed from Khoury on the endline. The fifth-year seniors combined for 24 regular season goals in 2014 and Francki now has two this season.
"Chemistry is big," said Khoury. "I knew it was Julia right before I made the pass, and she told me that she knew where I was going to go. That comes with playing together for so long."
While the seniors provided the goal, rookie sriker Brooklyn McAlear-Fanus had one of the best chances of the game just 12 minutes in. The Ottawa native got excellent positioning high up for a strong header shot which hit the crossbar.
Ottawa outshot Nipissing by a 28-6 margin, with Laker keepers Carlee Bennard and Kelly Dunk making five and nine saves, respectively.
Nipissing opened the second half with three straight corner kicks, one of which resulted in a shot. Ottawa head coach Steve Johnson implored his defence to find better options, and the Lakers were repelled until the dying minutes. A final corner kick brought Gee-Gees keeper Cynthia Leblanc off the line for a two-handed knockdown just before full time.
The Gee-Gees will look to sweep the weekend home stand when they take on the current East Division leaders, the Laurentian Voyageurs (3-0-0) at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Carboni's lone goal paces Marauders to 1-0 victory
Maila Carboni continued the hot start to her rookie season on Saturday, and fired the Marauders into their first victory of the OUA season. The first-year striker had the game's only goal in the 40th minute, as McMaster defeated Windsor 1-0 at Ron Joyce Stadium.
The two teams looked to be well matched in the opening half, and each was able to craft its fair share of scoring opportunities. The most serious threat to the Marauders came in the 31st minute, when Lancer midfielder Paiten Stephens thumped a heavy shot just wide of the home side's far post.
Nine minutes later, it was the hosts who found the game's opening tally, as Carboni netted her second of the season by chesting down a bouncing ball in the box, turning and firing a well-placed shot into the top corner of the Windsor net.
The remaining five minutes of the first half were fairly uneventful, and McMaster comfortably took their advantage into the break.
Predictably, the Lancers pressed for an equalizer early and often in the second half, but a combination of the Marauders organized defending and their own inability to apply the final touch kept the visitors off the scoresheet. A week ago, the Marauders had seen a late lead painfully slip away, but they showed that lessons had indeed been learned, and battened down the hatches to win their first match of the 2015 season.
McMaster will look to add another game to the win column on Sunday, when the Brock Badgers pay a visit to Ron Joyce Stadium. That match will get underway at 1:00 p.m. and is free of charge for spectators.

Lions explode for seven goals in home opener win
Nour Ghoneim and Kiyani Johnson each scored a pair of goals to lead the York University Lions women's soccer team to a 7-1 victory over the Brock Badgers in their home opener on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 5) at York Stadium.
Ghoneim's first of the contest, scored in the eighth minute, turned out to be the game winner and she added another just four minutes to the second half for the team's fourth goal of the contest.
Second-year striker Christina Morelli (Richmond Hill, Ont.) opened the scoring just three minutes into the game after tapping in a pass from midfielder Sarah Wong (Toronto), and Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.) made it 2-0 on a successful penalty kick after Sydney Hoareau (Brampton, Ont.) drew the foul.
Brock cut into the lead in the 11th minute when Alana Wong converted her own penalty kick for a 2-1 Lions lead they carried into the half.
That was as close as they would get, however, as Ghoneim opened a high-scoring second half with her third of the season, followed by Wong's marker just one minute later. Rookie striker Johnson (Markham, Ont.) scored the first goal of her career in the 70th minute thanks to a beautiful pass from Shannon Wood (Brampton, Ont.) to make it 5-1 for the Lions, Colleen Beesley (Richmond Hill, Ont.) found the back of the net in the 79th minute and Johnson scored her second of the day in the 82nd minute to round out the scoring.
The Lions pressured the Badgers throughout the contest and dominated possession in Brock's half of the field. York fired 22 shots towards the net, with Brock goalkeeper Lauren MacCulloch making five saves to go along with the seven goals she allowed. Her counterpart in York's net, Taylor Grant (Brampton, Ont.) made two saves.
The Lions are one of three teams in the OUA West to remain undefeated, joining Laurier and Western atop the division standings. The Badgers are still looking for their first win of the year after an 0-3 start.
The Lions will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they return to York Stadium to face the Windsor Lancers in a match beginning at 1pm.

Cvetkovic's hat trick helps lead Mustangs to 10-1 win over Algoma
SAULT STE MARIE, Ont. – Three goals from defender Sonja Cvetkovic led the offence as the Western Mustangs women's soccer team defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds 10-1 on Saturday afternoon at Superior Heights Field.
The win is Western's third consecutive victory to start the season, and puts the Mustangs into a tie for first place in the OUA West Division with the Laurier Golden Hawks, who also boast a 3-0-0 record. Algoma's record falls to 0-3-0 on the year with the loss.
Cvetkovic got the scoring started for the Mustangs in the 10th minute, and later added a pair of goals only two minutes apart, scoring in the 73rd and 75th minutes to complete the hat trick. The London native now leads the purple and white with four goals on the season.
Along with the trio of markers from Cvetkovic, seven other Mustangs earned their way onto the scoresheet with Paige Howard, Amanda Boyle, Tianna Deluzio, Stefanie Di Tella, Jess Friend, Jivan Yacou, and Meghan Glibbery all finding the back of the Algoma net.
Following Cvetkovic's game opening goal Howard scored only three minutes later to give Western an early 2-0 lead. The scoring pace solowed down for the next few minutes until Boyle and Deluzio extended the Mustangs lead in the 33rd and 34th minutes respectively.
Algoma's Cassandra Lethbridge answered back for the Thunderbirds after Deluzio's goal, cutting Western's lead to 4-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half. Unfortunately for the host side that would be their only goal of the game as Di Tella and Friend added a goal each before the end of the first half, followed by two goals from Cvetkovic, and one each from Yacou and Glibbery in the second to give Western the 10-1 win.
Next up for the Mustangs is another contest with Algoma, with this one scheduled for 12 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Superior Heights Field in Sault Ste. Marie.

Gaels control play but settle for 1-1 draw with Toronto
KINGSTON, Ont. (September 5, 2015) - The Gaels (0-1-2) took on Toronto (1-0-1) at Miklas McCarney field in the Gaels home opener. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw despite the Gaels controlling much of the play.
During the first half of the game the Gaels controlled the possession, but conceded the first goal when Toronto forward Nicki Parkes deflected the ball past the Gaels goalkeeper on a set play. Sarah Nixon (Oakville, Ont.) tied up the game for the Gaels in the 33rd minute with a strike from the left side of the 18 yard box.
The goal for Nixon was her first career CIS goal that she struck after substituting on.
The second half saw the Gaels continue to control the game with the pace and possession. Toronto came close to breaking the tie early in the second when they struck a shot off the right post. Queen's continued their offensive pressure on Toronto's defence, Gaels forward Jenny Wolever (Toronto) nearly scored after being substituted into the game in the middle of the second half but couldn't beat the keeper. The game featured back and fourth action and it was the Gaels Jessie de Boer (North Vancouver) who almost won the game with an inside shot in the last five minutes.
Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.) made four saves in the game, and her counterpart Toronto's Sara Pertucci made eight.
