Carabins edge UOIT on kicks at 2014 CIS women’s soccer championship

QUEBEC CITY (CIS) – The consolation portion of 2014 CIS women's soccer championship started with penalty kicks Friday morning at Stade TELUS-Université Laval in Quebec City. The Montreal Carabins defeated the University of Ontario Institute Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks 1-0, scoring four penalties to the Ridgebacks three.

Despite out-chancing UOIT 28 shots to 10, the Montreal Carabins used compact defence aided with a little luck to help push themselves through to the consolation final after edging the Ridgebacks in a penalty shootout.

Montreal will now play for fifth place Saturday at 11 a.m. against the winner of the other consolation semifinal between the Western Mustangs and Memorial Sea-Hawks. The Carabins' best finish at the national tournament was a silver medal in 2013, while the Ridgebacks finish their first trip to the CIS championships in seventh.

"We call it a consolation game for a reason, it's a little consolation," said Carabins coach Kevin McConnell following the teams win. "We are happy with the performance if we compare with yesterday's. We are glad to get the chance to play another game against a quality opponent."

UOIT coach Peyvand Mossavat on his team performance. "I thought it was a good game. Montreal has always been a strong team. I felt that we controlled the game very well, especially in the first half," said Mossavat. "Our team is quite young and we were hoping the game wouldn't go to penalty kicks because I think they got a little more experience than we do. My hat goes off the girls, they worked hard."

The first half left much to desired as both teams still looked hung up on losses from the day before. The play took place mainly in midfield, with neither team being able to establish a rhythm.

The only real scoring chance came in the 36th minute. Ridgebacks's defender Sara Voisin (Waterloo, Ont.) made a great individual effort to break through the Montreal defence, firing a shot just wide past a diving Emily Beaudoin (Boisbriand, Que.).

Similar to the opening half, much of the second lacked energy with opportunities to open the scoring scarce.

Extra time gave rise to the game's best chance when in the 114th minute Carabins's Karine Constantine (Sainte-Therese, Que.) hit the crossbar after shielding the defender just inside the box.

Ridgebacks's keeper Melissa Linton (Cobourg, Ont.) also made a key fingertip save just near the end of stoppage time to help take the game to penalties.

In penalties it was Carabins midfielder Beatrice Toupin (Montreal) tucking away the penalty to end the game.
