W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: Rams hand No. 4 Ridgebacks first loss
Guelph 1 @ Laurier 2
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 15, 2014) – In their final home game of the season, the No. 7 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's soccer remained undefeated at home as they defeated the Guelph Gryphons 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at University Stadium.
In a match that Laurier needed to win in order to maintain pace in the OUA West division with the York Lions and Western Mustangs, the Golden Hawks were able to find the back of the net late to earn the full three points.
In the first half the Golden Hawks came out flying, trying to score the first goal, something they haven't done in the past two games. Even though the Hawks doubled the Gryphons in shots 12 to six as well as taking eight corners, Laurier was not able to get one in the first half. They went into half all tied up at zero.
Laurier did not show any fatigue in the second half, continuing to pour on the pressure. Their style of play finally paid off in the 66th minute when Nicole Lyon of Kitchener, Ont., put in the feed from Julie Karn of Huntsville, Ont., to put the Hawks ahead 1-0.
Unfortunately, the Gryphons did have an answer in the 73rd minute as Kristina Strojin of St. Catharines, Ont., walked around Laurier keeper Maggie Carmichael of Orono, Ont., to even the game at one.
The Golden Hawks just came off a surprise draw against the Waterloo Warriors and did not want to have the same outcome in this match. In the 81st minute, the Hawks found the go-ahead marker as freshmen midfielder Kassia Hayek of Burnaby, B.C., scored her second goal of the season to put the Hawks up 2-1 and that is how it would end. For the third time in the past four games the Golden Hawks scored in the last ten minutes of the match to earn a victory.
The 11-1-3 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks wrap up their season when they travel to St. Catharines to take on the 4-9-1 Brock Badgers Saturday afternoon. The last time these two teams met, the Badgers gave the Golden Hawks all they could handle. The Hawks had to come back from a 2-0 deficit to win a close one 3-2. Laurier looks to avoid repeating it in this match and enter the playoffs on a high note. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m at Brock Field.

Ottawa 3 @ Queen's 0
KINGSTON, Ont. (October 15, 2014) - The women's soccer team (8-4-3) could not find the back of the net as they went on to lose 3-0 against the No.2 Ottawa Gee Gees (13-1-0) at Miklas-McCarney Field on Wednesday night.
Ottawa opened the scoring when Pilar Khoury was awarded a penalty kick after being taken down by Micah Vermeer (Grimsby, Ontario) in the box. Khoury stepped up and buried the shot into the bottom right corner. The Gee-Gees doubled their lead in the final minutes of the half as Khoury deposited her second of the match.
The Gaels best scoring opportunity of the evening came early on in the second half when Breanna Burton's (Ottawa) strike found the crossbar. Queen's was unable to generate further offensive pressure as the Gee-Gees added another to earn the 3-0 victory.
Keeper Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.) started in net for the Gaels and suffered the loss after surrendering three goals on nine shots. Cynthia LeBlanc of the Gee-Gees earned the victory after turning aside all seven shots that came her way.
The Gaels (8-4-3) return to Miklas-McCarney Field on Sunday at 1pm for their final game of the regular season against RMC (0-13-1).

UOIT 0 @ Ryerson 1
TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams women's soccer team handed the No. 4 nationally ranked UOIT Ridgebacks their first loss of the season on Wednesday night, defeating the visitors by a final score of 1-0 at Monarch Park Stadium.
Senior Amy Tahmizian (Aurora, Ont.) scored the game-winner in the 85th minute on a strange play from midfield.
Tahmizian was simply trying to clear the ball away from an oncoming player when the ball headed up field and caught UOIT keeper Melissa Linton out of her box with striker Alex Rodkin (Whitby, Ont.) applying pressure. Unable to play the ball, Linton backed up but as the ball bounced high off the turf, it skidded past her and into the back of the net.
"You never know when things like that happen. A little bit of pressure up high which forced the goalkeeper to make a decision…and we'll take it. Sometimes you earn your own luck through hard work. I think we've been on the wrong end of that a few times earlier in the year and tonight we got lucky to get the goal," said head coach Kevin Souter following the match.
The Rams were comfortable playing defensively sound soccer and handled a myriad of shots from the Ridgebacks. UOIT outshot the Rams 15-3, including an 11-1 advantage on those that landed on goal.
Ryerson keeper Brittney Clendenan (Ottawa, Ont.) came up big for the Rams, stopping all 11 shots for the cleansheet, although she needed an extra hand shortly after Ryerson got on the board.
After Clendenan punched away a shot from the left flank, the rebound landed over near the right post and Katrina Gonyea (Aurora, Ont.) was forced to make a sliding goal line clearance to preserve the cleansheet and victory.
The victory runs the Rams record to 5-8-1 on the season and sets up an interesting final weekend of regular season action. Ryerson goes into the final weekend in seventh place, just one point shy of the final playoff position currently held by Laurentian. The Rams will have the chance to surpass the Voyageurs when they meet on Saturday afternoon in Sudbury. Ryerson will finish the season on Sunday against Nipissing, who currently sit in eighth position.
