Algoma 0 @ Guelph 9
Guelph, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team played the Algoma Thunderbirds at home Friday with a final score of 9-0. A total of six Gryphons contributed to the scoring, and the victory moves the Gryphons to 5-6-1 on the season.
Guelph dominated the play from the beginning, in part thanks to strong passing from Elise De Decker (London, Ont.), Courtney Whiteside (Guelph, Ont.), and Bianca Ferlisi (Woodbridge, Ont.). Breanna Hall (Kanata, Ont.) moved in to score the Gryphons' first goal off of teammate Whiteside's rebound in the sixth minute, taking an early lead. The offensive line kept the play in Algoma's end, setting Hall up to score a second goal in the 36th minute. Danielle Canhoto (Georgetown, Ont.)and Krista Lopoyda (Niagara Falls, Ont.) were close behind, scoring a goal in the 42nd and 43rd minutes respectively. The Gryphons finished the first half up by four with no shots on Guelph keeper Elizabeth Brenneman (Baden, Otn.)
The Gryphons switched to more defensive play in the second half, utilizing the skills of starting defender Nicole Brown-Shaw (Ajax, Ont.). Kristina Strojin (St. Catharine's, Ont.) carried the ball up the field to turn the play in Guelph's favour, scoring two goals within 10 minutes. Jacqueline Goulart (Mississauga, Ont.) followed her teammates' lead and scored two goals of her own in the second half. Halftime substitute Meredith Langston (Aurora, Ont.) brought fresh energy to the second half, scoring a goal in the 83rd minute.

Waterloo 2 @ Laurier 2
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 10, 2014) – Coming off a thrilling victory over the No. 8 Western Mustangs Wednesday afternoon, the No. 7 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks hosted their cross town rivals the Waterloo Warriors Friday evening. The Golden Hawks scored a late goal to earn a 2-2 draw at University Stadium.
Early in the first half, the Golden Hawks were in unfamiliar territory against the Warriors. Laurier fell behind early as the Warriors struck first in the 14th minute off the foot of midfielder Adrienne Goldsworthy of Waterloo, Ont., to take an early 1-0 lead. However the OUA West division leading Hawks were unfazed by this and countered quickly. Hawks' leading goal scorer Emily Brown of Waterloo, Ont., responded in the 25th minute to tie the game up at one.
As time worn on, both teams had numerous opportunities to go ahead in the match. It was not until the 78th minute when Waterloo was able to put the ball past Laurier keeper Maggie Carmichael of Orono, Ont., to take a one goal lead.
For the second time in the game it did not take long for Laurier to respond. Brown scored her second goal on the night in the 80th minute to even up the game. With the two goals Emily Brown is now tied atop the OUA scoring race with 20 tallies on the year.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net the rest of match resulting in a 2-2 draw. Unfortunately for the Golden Hawks, it was the first time since 2006 that they did not earn the full three points against the Waterloo Warriors at home.
With the tie the Golden Hawks record improves to 10-1-3 and now take soul possession of first place in the OUA West division, which may not last long. Both the York Lions and Western Mustangs only need a victory to pass the Hawks and both teams have a game in hand. The Golden Hawks need some help in order to maintain first place in the division.
Laurier looks to get back in the win column when they host the Guelph Gryphons in their final home game of the season Wednesday afternoon, October 15. Kick of is set for 4:15 p.m at University Stadium.

The Ridgebacks would score three first half goals and they cruised to their 10th win of the year. Carleton 0 @ Ottawa 5
OTTAWA, Ont - A relentless offensive attack in the opening half powered the no. 2 ranked University of Ottawa Gee-Gees to a 5-0 final score over the Carleton Ravens on Saturday afternoon. Pilar Khoury and Sheniz Eryuzlu each scored twice for the home side, giving Ottawa (12-1-0) its twelfth straight win and eighth shut out victory of the season.
The Gee-Gees grabbed hold of the lead in the early going with two goals resulting from corner kicks. Khoury netted the first goal of the game just two minutes in, and was quickly followed by a Sophie Curtis goal at the four minute mark.
Khoury padded the lead at the sixteen minute mark when she was set up beautifully by Julia Francki. Francki beat the Carleton keeper to a long pass down the wing and calmly but powerfully crossed the ball to the other side of the net for Khoury to pot her tenth goal of the season. The fourth-year striker became the first player in the OUA East to reach ten goals this season.
"We had good service from the backs to the strikers and they linked up well with the midfielders again," noted Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson, whose troops were on point with long passes in the first half. "We had good support all over the field."
"At the beginning [of the game] we came out really hard and focussed," said senior defender Chiara Quadri. "We are feeling confident because we've learned how we connect with each other. Every time we come out with a great performance it makes me that much more excited about going forward."
Khoury was in the midst of the action again at the 31 minute mark when she received a yellow card in the box while attempting to block a Carleton shot. Raven Sarah Royer stepped to the penalty mark and fired a strong shot just over the crossbar and the outstretched arms of Cynthia Leblanc.
The Ravens' best offensive chances came late in the first half. Leblanc earned the shutout with four saves, but the Gee-Gees needed a last minute goal line save by rookie defender Sabrina Wahab to preserve the clean sheet.
Eryuzlu's goals came late in the second half following a slow start out of the locker rooms. Ottawa clogged the middle and prevented Carleton from gaining ground, content to play safe and wait for chances. Eryuzlu's first goal was set up well by Faythe Lou, who arched a ball across the mouth of the goal to find her team mate on the doorstep.
The Gee-Gees have three regular season games remaining and will meet the 8-2-3 Queen's Gaels on Wednesday, October 15 in Kingston, Ont.

McMaster 0 @ Western 5
LONDON, Ont. – Five different Western Mustangs scorers found the back of the net as the women's soccer team defeated the McMaster Marauders 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Field.
"Getting the goal we got towards the end of the first half to make it 1-0, which was a great goal – great buildup, great ball by Angelika [Mihalopulos], great finish – it was a real quality goal, once we went up 1-0 they had to change up their tactics a little bit," said Mustangs head coach Martin Painter. "We had to defend a bit more in the second half, but that opened up space to allow us to use our speed, which fortunately for us we were able to use effectively."
With the win the Mustangs move to 11-2-1 on the season and are battling Laurier and York for the top spot in the OUA West Division. The Marauders fall to 3-7-3 in 2014, and are in seventh place in the OUA West.
Western used a balanced attack on Saturday afternoon with Lauren Winquist, Tianna Deluzio, Lauren Vandenbygaart, Amanda Boyle and Paige Howard supplying the offence.
"It's confidence," said Painter on having a balanced attack. "Having multiple players who go on the field believing they can make a difference and score a goal. Realistically if you're going to win big games, playoff games, you're going to need contributions by different players, sometimes unexpected places. I think having that balanced scoring – that depth – will be key going forward."
Boyle's goal gives her sole possession of the CIS scoring lead with 21 goals on the year, pulling one goal ahead of Laurier's Emily Brown.
The Mustangs came out strong in the first half, controlling the play for the majority of the first 45 and kept the ball in the attacking half for large stretches at a time. Western eventually broke through the Marauders defence as Lauren Winquist fired a shot past McMaster keeper Brittany Duffey in the 41st minute to send the home side into the second half with a 1-0 lead.
McMaster opened the second with their first chance of the contest off of a corner by Amanda Jones, however it was the Mustangs that struck first just moments later as Tianna Deluzio scored her third goal of the season off of a penalty shot to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute.
Western increased the lead to 3-0 just five minutes later as a fantastic corner from Deluzio was headed in by Lauren Vandenbygaart for her 3rd tally of the year. Boyle then added her 21st of the year on a breakaway in the 79th minute.
That looked like it would be all the scoring for the day, however Paige Howard wasn't finished as she fired a shot into the McMaster net just seconds before the final whistle to give Western a 5-0 win.

Shynice Williams (Mississauga, Ont.) stretched her goal-scoring streak to four games, as she got the Ridgebacks on the board just six minutes into Sunday's contest. Williams would cut up the middle of the field and chip it over the goalkeeper for her fourth goal of the season.
The Ridgebacks would add some separation early in the second half when Sara Voisin (Waterloo, Ont.) headed in a free kick from Kylie Bordeleau (Cambridge, Ont.) in the 49th minute, followed by a bullet from Cassandra Sribny (Pickering, Ont.) four minutes later. KINGSTON, Ont. (October 12, 2014) - The women's soccer team could not find the back of the net in the second half as the Gaels were defeated 2-1 by Toronto on Sunday afternoon on Miklas-McCarney Field.
The Varsity Blues opened the scoring nine minutes into the match on a goal from Nicki Parkes amidst appeals from some Queen's players that the ball had hit the football upright and gone out of play. The Gaels knotted the score in the 30th minute as Jessie de Boer (North Vancouver, B.C.) controlled a cross from Brittany Almeida (Kingston, Ont.), and Tara Bartram (Vancouver) buried her fourth of the season.

Waterloo 0 @ York 1
Aisha Lewis (Mississauga, Ont.) scored the only goal as the No. 5 nationally ranked York University Lions women's soccer team won 1-0 against the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday (Oct. 12).
The Lions take their record to 11-1-2. They now lead the OUA West division with 35 points with the Western Mustangs trailing by just one point in second place.
Despite a blistering start, neither team was able to to score in the opening minutes. Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.) made two shots within ten minutes, both of which were saved by Warriors goalkeeper Lesia Bandura.
In the 25th minute, Bandura was knocked down while sliding to save the ball from a Lewis run. Bandura stayed down for a minute but was able to get up and play on.
Lewis received a through pass from midfield and took a shot from 20 yards that went wide off the goal in the 36th minute.
The Lions increased the pressure in the 37th minute as a pass released Christina Morelli (Markham, Ont.) shot from inside the box. The ball skimmed over the bar.
A minute later, the Lions got their lead from a beautiful team effort. Morelli received a similar through pass from the right and laid the ball off for Lewis to bury home.
Lewis almost added to the lead in the stroke of halftime. However, the Warriors goalie was able to clear the ball before Lewis had a chance to shoot.
The second half saw Lewis taking more chances on goal. Not long after the kickoff, Sarah Wong (Toronto) released Lewis down the left. Lewis shot the ball wide from a difficult angle.
In the 54th minute, Ghoneim went one-on-one with the keeper but Bandura was quick to dive for the save.
Wong continued making her presence known in the 67th minute as she intercepted a ball from a defender's pass and sent the ball to Lewis, whose shot grazed the crossbar.
Wong's streak came to an abrupt end in the 78th minute as the striker clashed with a defender's shoulder head-on. Francesca Pedulla (Richmond Hill, Ont.) came on to replace Wong.
Ten minutes later, Warriors' no. 9, Alisia Mar, clipped heels with Ghoneim while challenging for the ball. Mar was taken to the sidelines for treatment as Alexis Shamess took her place.
Lewis went in for one last attempt on goal in the 90th minute, but Bandura was there to save again.
Lions goalkeeper Courtney Davis (Cambridge, Ont.) successfully kept her seventh shutout of the season.
The Lions will be facing the Windsor Lancers at home on Saturday (Oct. 18) at 1pm.
