W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: UOIT shuts out RMC to remain undefeated at 7-0-2
Saturday, September 27
Toronto 1 @ Ryerson 0
TORONTO, Ont – The Ryerson Rams women's soccer team could not continue their recent winning streak as the Toronto Varsity Blues claimed a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at Monarch Park Stadium.
Toronto's Christine Zwimpfer scored the lone goal of the game in the 69th minute on a low shot from the left flank that skipped along the hot turf and found the bottom right corner.
The two teams played an evenly matched first half, a half which saw Ryerson outshoot the Blues 6-4. It was Toronto that had the best chance, however, as Olivia Gonsalves had a go for goal on a free kick but Rams keeper Brittney Clendenan (Ottawa, Ont.) did well to direct it off her fingers to push it over the crossbar.
Toronto applied the majority of pressure in the second half, outshooting Ryerson 8-3 in the second stanza.
With time winding down, Rams winger Sarah Harvey (Bowmanville, Ont.) had a strong effort on goal from the top of the 18 yard box but Blues keeper Sara Petrucci was able to tip the ball off the crossbar and Toronto escaped with the 1-0 win.
Ryerson drops to 2-6-0 on the season while Toronto improves to 5-2-1.
Petrucci finished with four saves for the cleansheet while Clendenan stopped four in the losing effort.

Waterloo @ Western
LONDON, Ont. - Striker Amanda Boyle contributed four goals in the Mustangs 8-1 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday afternoon at Mustangs field.
"It was a hard battle in the middle of the field, especially in the first 20 minutes," said head coach Martin Painter. "But as they got a little bit more tired spaces opened up, our distribution improved and our running off the ball improved and we were getting behind them and got some goals."
With Saturday's win the Mustangs record improves to 9-1-0, while the Warriors drop to 0-9-0 on the season.
Boyle now sits at 17 goals on the season, tied for first place on the OUA leaderboard.
Despite the Waterloo squad applying heavy pressure in the opening minutes, the Mustangs stood strong and held off any Warrior attacks. As the game progressed, the purple and white would force the pressure the other way, and at the 20-minute mark Boyle opened up the scoring, blasting a shot past Lesia Bandura to put Western up 1-0. Just four minutes later Boyle would net another to make it a two goal lead. At the end of the first half the scoreboard sat at 4-0, after both Paige Howard and Jess Friend found the back of the net.
As the second half started, the Warriors were ready to try and make a comeback right from the opening whistle. Their efforts would not go unrewarded as Alisia Mar put the ball past Tori Edgar to make the score 4-1. Despite Waterloo's efforts to shorten the gap, the Mustangs held them off and at the 70-minute mark Boyle recorded her third goal of the game to put the Mustangs back at a four goal advantage. The purple and white offensive momentum did not let up, with Boyle, Sarah Deakin, and Stephanie Di Tella all adding goals before the final whistle to end the game at 8-1.

Laurentian 0 @ Ottawa 5
An early goal for Pilar Khoury had the crowed excited at Matt Anthony Field Saturday as the no. 4 ranked Gee-Gees hosted Laurentian in a heated matchup. Ottawa (8-1-0) followed through on the early lead and blanked the Voyageurs (3-5-1) by a 5-0 score.
With only two minutes in, Khoury ran the ball to the back of the net and scored her first of two goals. She was also able to outplay Laurentian 17 minutes later, scoring what would be her ninth goal of the season which places her seventh in the OUA.
Five minutes before the clock stopped for intermission, midfielder Julia Francki scored leaving the opposing team down by three. "Their speed is always going to be a problem," said Laurentian Coach Rob Gallo. "Midfield played tremendous and we gave them too much time and space to play. When they scored the first two of the game that put us in a really bad position and allowing that third one caused us a little bit of grief."
The Gee-Gees maintained control over the ball and created great opportunities throughout. "I thought we had a really good first half," said Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson. "The ball movement was good. Linking from backs to midfielders was probably the best that I've seen so far this year," he added.
Coming into the second half it was noticeable that Laurentian had regrouped and played a more aggressive game. They were able to move the ball toward the Gee-Gees net, resulting in two saves for keeper Cynthia Leblanc.
At the 70-minute mark, Francki added one more to the board, giving her her second goal of the game and nine this season.
"I think we just wanted to come out strong and not let it get to a close game," said Francki. "We were focusing on finishing at the net and I think we did that well."
Delaney Rickert-Hall had the game capper at 81 minutes.

York 4 @ Brock 1
ST. CATHARINES, Ont - An early lead for Brock (3-7 OUA) was not enough to hold off the No. 2 ranked Lions (9-0-1 OUA).
The Badgers got off to a quick start when Brooke Boekestyn beat her defender and placed a right-footed shot passed York goaltender Courtney Davis to give the home side an early 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. With the goal, Boekestyn tied the Brock single season school record with her 8th goal of the season.
Just five minutes after the Brock goal, York striker Nour Ghoneim redirected an oncoming shot to tie the game in the 21st minute. Ghoneim proved to be a dominant player for the Lions early on, as she was able to get on the score sheet again in the 25th minute, but this time with an assist to Christina Morelli who found the back of the net with a well placed shot from the right wing.
York dominated the posession of the ball for the majority of the first half as Brock was only able to get two shots on net, compared to York's eight.
Brock started strong in the second half, as they were able control posession and create a few positive plays on the attack. But York was not about to let the Badgers take control.
Instead they regained control of the game with a goal in the 74th minute by Aisha Lewis. The Badgers defence was under constant pressure in the second half trying to contain the aggressive York attack. This agressive play style by York almost cost them a goal in the 80th minute when Brock striker Boekestyn found herself in a 1-on-1 situation with Davis, but could not find a way to put the ball past her opponent. York striker Ghoneim scored her second goal of the game in the 90th minute to secure a convincing 4-1 victory over the Badgers.
In goal, Brock starter Meaghan Buckingham collected seeven saves in the loss. York's Davis turned aside four of the five shots she faced for the road win.

McMaster 1 @ Guelph 1
Guelph, Ont. (September 27, 2014) – The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team tied the McMaster Marauders 1-1 at home today at the Gryphons Soccer Complex. Guelph sits at 3-5-1 for the season after this game while the Marauders are 3-4-1.
Starting centre Andrea Cimino (London, Ont.) got into the action right away, facilitating strong passing among the forward line. Guelph's effective one-on-one coverage prevented the Marauders from setting up any plays and kept Guelph in power for most of the first half.
The Gryphons had several close opportunities to score, with eight shots on net in the first half. McMaster was the first to get any points on the board with the first goal of the game in the 21st minute of play and the Gryphons ended the first half down 1-0.
In the second half, the team seemed rejuvenated and determined as ever as they kept possession of the play, led by Simino. The coaches made the decision to move defender Stephanie Moore (Mississauga, Ont.) up to the offensive line and were rewarded in the 75th minute when she scored her first season goal to tie the game. Neither team was able to pull ahead in the last 15 minutes of play and the game ended with a score of 1-1.
Gryphon goalkeeper Elizabeth Brenneman made three saves in the draw while Christina Abbatangelo tallied eight.

OSHAWA, Ont. – The No. 5 ranked UOIT women's soccer team kept their undefeated record intact with a 1-1 draw against the Queen's Gaels on Saturday afternoon at Vaso's Field.
With the tie, UOIT is 6-0-2 on the season while Queen's improves to 4-2-2. The Ridgebacks trail Ottawa (8-1-0) by four points for top spot in the OUA eastern conference standings, but have a game in hand on the Gee-Gees. After Saturday's games, UOIT is one of seven teams across the country with an undefeated record.

Laurentian 2 @ Carleton 2
OTTAWA, Ont - The Laurentian Women's soccer team played against the Carleton Ravens on Sunday, September 28 in Ottawa. The women were coming off a tough loss to the Ottawa GeeGees on Saturday, and they needed to take away points from the Carleton Ravens. The women gave up their 1-0 lead in the last minutes of the first, but were able to come back from a 2-1 deficit to tie the game at 2-2 and take home a point against the Ravens.
The women came out strong from the opening whistle, and put the Ravens under pressure immediately. Voyageur forwards Sam Selkirk, Megan Ferguson and Sarah Sanford tormented the Ravens back line and made it difficult for them to settle the play from within their end of the field. Laurentian's first goal came from a free kick that was redirected into the back of the net by third year Amy Fitzgerald at the 6th minute mark.
The Ravens created opportunities of their own in Laurentian's end of the field, but it wasn't until the 60th minute that they got the ball past goaltender Richele Greenwood. Ravens' captain Sarah Royer notched her 5th goal of the season on a top corner shot, tying up the game at 1-1 to end the half.
The Voyageurs needed to keep up their intensity of play coming into the second, and they were able to do just that. Both teams got scoring opportunities, but it was the home team that got the go-ahead-goal off a corner kick. The Voyageurs were caught watching as the Ravens played a short corner and crossed the ball into the box where Melat Cherent headed the ball into the net, putting her team up 2-1 with 29 minutes left to play.
The women didn't get down on themselves after the Ravens' goal, and immediately countered their opponent's goal with one of their own. The Voyageurs tied the game at the 62 minute mark when fourth year Julie Lopez put a shot past Carleton goaltender Rada Mitchev, tying the game at 2-2.
The Ravens controlled the play in the last 10 minutes of the game, however the Voyageurs stood strong and denied them any other scoring opportunities. The game ended tied at 2-2, both teams walking away with a point from the contest.

Trent 0 @ Queen's 4
KINGSTON, Ont. - Jessie de Boer (Vancouver) netted two goals as the Gaels shutout the Trent Excalibur 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Gaels dominated play from the start of the match, opening the scoring in the seventh minute. De Boer intercepted a Trent pass and buried a powerful strike in the top left corner. Two minutes later, she collected her second tally of the afternoon, scoring on a give-and-go with Tara Bartram (Vancouver). The Gaels continued to pour on the offensive pressure, adding a third goal in the 20th minute. Matija Skoko (Toronto) got her first goal of the season after finishing a cross from Rachel Radu (Ottawa).
The Gaels generated numerous scoring chances to begin the second half as they looked to add to their lead. Emma Smith (Toronto) and Bartram came close to finding the back of the net, but could not beat Trent's replacement keeper Emily Webb. Gaels backup goaltender Michaila Frawley (Victoria, B.C.) kept Trent off the board after replacing Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.) at halftime. Queen's would eventually add a fourth goal in the 88th minute, when Savannah Meyer-Clement (Markham, Ont.) stripped Trent's keeper of the ball and guided it into the open net.
Queen's keepers Tyrell and Frawley registered two saves apiece to earn the combined clean sheet.

Brock 0 @ Guelph 3
Guelph, Ont. (September 28, 2014) - The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team shutout the Brock Badgers 3-0 at home today at the Gryphons Soccer Complex in Guelph. The 3-0 victory moves the Gryphons to 4-5-1 on the season while the Badgers drop to 3-8.
The Gryphons effective passing began with their defensive line and Bianca Ferlisi (Woodbridge, Ont.) helping to push the ball up the field. The Gryphons had several chances to score in the first several minutes. Brock's starting goalie, Meaghan Buckingham, was ejected from the game in the 21st minute after a handball out of her crease. Guelph was able to score off of a penalty kick in the 27th minute thanks to rookie Jacqueline Goulart (Mississauga, Ont.), quickly followed by a second goal in the 29th minute as Breanna Hall (Kanata, Ont.) capitalized on a pass in front of the net from Goulart.
Guelph maintained their lead in the second half, scoring a third goal in the 50th minute from Danielle Canhoto (Georgetown, Ont.). Continuing to push to the net and keep the play in Brock's end, the Gryphons did not score again but had a total of 16 shots on net throughout the game.

Nipissing 1 @ Ottawa 5
OTTAWA, Ont - The Gee-Gees were on a roll this weekend at Matt Anthony Field, scoring within two minutes of play in both games. Striker Faythe Lou put the first goal on the board Sunday afternoon giving the Gee-Gees yet another early lead. The no.4 ranked team in the country improved its record to 9-1-0 with a 5-1 decision over the Nipissing Lakers.
"We are terrific at starting games and getting ahead," said Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson. "I think both games this weekend certainly helped the team settle."
At 33 minutes defender Meaghan Ramsden's shot from a corner kick found the back of the net, followed by Pilar Khoury at 43 minutes in. Julia Francki was able to squeeze one more in at the 45th minute putting the Gee-Gees in a 4-0 lead.
Lakers Coach David Bitonti's decision to change formation in the first half in order to play more defensively seemed to have backfired. "That really was the difference in the game - the fact that our formation changed and the first half is when [the Gee-Gees] took most of the possessions."
A penalty kick early in the second half put the Lakers on the scoreboard after a foul against Kristen Farkas, who scored the lone goal for the team.
Ottawa's momentum was still strong half way through the second half, providing Julia Francki the opportunity to tap the ball in at 67 minutes for her second goal.

Waterloo 4 @ McMaster 3
HAMILTON, Ont - The McMaster women's soccer team got down, fought back, but fell short in a 4-3 loss to Waterloo on Sunday afternoon.
The Marauders opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Emma Mangialardi, playing her first game this season, collected a poor clearing attempt by the Warriors and held the ball until the keeper committed before stepping past her to tap into the open net.
A corner opportunity in the 17th minute almost gave McMaster another goal, but Warrior keeper Lesia Bandura made a brilliant save to deny Marauder Alex Leonardelli's header.
In the 34th minute, Waterloo took advantage of a Marauder miscue and Melanie Mitchell found herself alone in front and she scored the equalizer. The teams headed into the intermission tied 1-1.
The second half saw Waterloo explode for three goals within the first 23 minutes. Tara Butterworth broke the tie off a scramble in front of the McMaster net in the 54th minute. Then the Warriors got goals from Kaileigh Van Brunt (58th) and Kaitlyn Unger (67th) to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
After one of the Marauders was taken down in the box in the 72nd minute, Mangialardi stepped up to the spot with a chance to cut the deficit, but was high with her shot.
Just moments later Marauder Maureen Mai was sent in alone and calmly slipped one past the keeper to make it 4-2.
The Marauders continued to press and Mai got another look from in close and scored again in the 88th minute to bring McMaster within one.
Despite some desperate effort through extra time, the Marauders could not get the equalizer and Waterloo left with the win.

Laurier 1 @ York 0
TORONTO, Ont - The No. 2 nationally-ranked York University Lions women's soccer team lost against the Laurier Golden Hawks with a score of 1-0 on Sunday (Sept. 28) at York Stadium. After a scoreless first half, the Hawks managed to clinch a win with a late goal by Julie Karn.
The Lions were pressuring the attacking third in the opening minutes. However, both teams seem equally matched with a couple of good chances on goal from both sides.
Aisha Lewis of Mississauga, Ont., saw her chance go wide after a pass from midfield released her down the left flank.
Golden Hawks left winger Maxine Murchie took a shot straight at Lions goalkeeper Courtney Davis (Cambridge, Ont.) after a good passing play by Laurier in the 25th minute.
Davis made another vital save after a dangerous run by the opponent 29 minutes through the first half.
The Lions kept up the pressure in midfield. In the 36th minute, Nour Ghoneim's (Aurora, Ont.) shot from 30 yards out grazed the crossbar.
After the break, the Lions pushed their offensive play early. Lewis went one-on-one with the keeper in the 47th minute but shot wide from a difficult angle. Ghoneim almost converted a corner with a bullet header in the 50th minute, only to see her attempt float barely over the bar.
The Lions had another shot on target through Francesca Pedulla (Richmond Hill, Ont.) in the 71st minute. Hawks' goalie went down to save comfortably.
Julie Karn took a shot just outside the box to give the Hawks a late advantage in the 80-minute mark.
This is the Lion's first loss of the season, and they now hold a record of 9-1-1. The team still retains first place in the OUA West standings.

UOIT 4 @ RMC 0
KINGSTON, Ont. – The No. 5 ranked UOIT women's soccer team earned their fourth shutout of the season as they blanked the RMC Paladins 4-0 in Kingston on Sunday.
The Ridgebacks remain undefeated with a 7-0-2 record, but trail Ottawa (9-1-0), who won their ninth straight game, by four points. UOIT is the only team to beat Ottawa this season, as they edged the Gee-Gees 3-2 in their season opener.
With the win, UOIT is the lone OUA school without a loss. After Sunday's slate of action, there are now only four other schools across the country with undefeated records including UNB, Acadia, Victoria and Trinity Western.
Freshmen did all of the scoring for the Ridgebacks against RMC with Rachel Matthews (Ajax, Ont.) registering two goals and Jordan Thornton (Ajax, Ont.) with the other. UOIT's other marker was an own goal by the Paladins.
With an 8-0 result in their first meeting against RMC, UOIT picked up right where they left off as Matthews scored just three minutes into the contest. The Ridgebacks would add two more goals over the next 25 minutes and another insurance marker in the second half to run away with the contest.
UOIT fired 15 shots on target, compared to just one by the Paladins. Melissa Linton (Cobourg, Ont.) would stop RMC's lone shot for her fourth cleansheet of the year.
