WATERLOO, Ont. – The No.7 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's soccer team came from behind to win a hard fought match over the Brock Badgers 3-2 at University Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
In the first half, the Golden Hawks came out flat and the Badgers took full advantage of it. In the 10th minute, Brock striker Brooke Boekestyn of Jordan Station, Ont., got loose on a breakaway and found the back of the net to take an early 1-0 lead. After letting in the early goal, Laurier started to push back. Through out the first half the Hawks dominated ball possession, but unfortunately they did not get many quality chances.
Brock's defense did not give any breathing room to the Hawks players once they stepped into the box. This method was working, since all the Hawks' shots on net were taken outside the box.
Late in the half Laurier's defense broke down and Brock was able to spring Boekestyn on another break away. For the second time on the afternoon Boekestyn found the back of the net. Going into half the Hawks were down 2-0.
The second half was a completely different story. Once the whistle went, Laurier came out fast with a ton of energy. This type of play paid off quickly. In the 46th minute Nicole Lyon of Kitchener, Ont., scored to bring the Hawks within one goal.
Laurier was solving the dominant defense the Badges had in the first half. For majority of the second half the Golden Hawks were on the opposing side of the field, putting massive amount of pressure on the defense. In the 68th minute Laurier tied the game thanks to the foot of OUA's leading scorer, Emily Brown of Waterloo, Ont. To round up the come back Laurier midfielder Maxine Murchie of Kitchener, Ont., scored the game winner in the 85th minute to beat the Badgers 3-2.
The 6-1-0 Golden Hawks look to extend their four game winning streak on Saturday afternoon when they host the 3-2-0 McMaster Marauders. Kick off is set for 1 p.m at University Stadium.
