The Marauder put on a resilient display on Wednesday night, battling through injuries to an already depleted lineup to claim a 2-1 win over the Brock Badgers at a rain-soaked Ron Joyce Stadium.
Sarah Fettah and Taylor Davis had goals for the Marauders, who once again evened their conference record, this time at 2-2, with the victory. Brooke Boekestyn scored the lone goal for the Badgers, who fell a league-worst 0-5.
Dampening the mood early were injuries to Marauder strikers Anne Yeboah and Robynn McGroarty. But despite the losses, and the lengthy delays they caused in play, McMaster made headway on the scoreboard when Fettah took down a cross in the 24th minute and coolly slotted a shot past the Brock keeper.
With a similar finish, Taylor Davis doubled the Marauder lead in the dying stages of the first half, controlling the pass and managing a weak shot that handcuffed the goalkeeper.
Momentum was clearly in McMaster's favour as the second half began, but the Badgers slowly worked themselves back into the match, and ensured an exciting finish on Wednesday.
With the ball at her feet, Marauder keeper Brittany Duffey misjudged her pass, and could only watch as it bounced off Boekestyn and the striker gave chase, easily potting the ball into the empty net in the 72nd minute. Five minutes later, Brock was inches from an equalizer as a set piece pinballed through the McMaster area before a Badger managed a heavy shot that caught the crossbar flush and bounced clear.
That was the last quality chance that the Badgers could muster, and the Marauders came away with a deserved three points on the night.
McMaster continues its season on Sunday, when the Marauders travel to Waterloo to battle the Warriors.
