Mustangs and Golden Hawks to play for OUA womenâ??s soccer gold
November 2, 2013
LONDON, Ont. – It will be an all-West final as the Laurier Golden Hawks and Western Mustangs won their respective semi-finals on Friday night at the Western Outdoor Sports Complex to advance to Sunday’s Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Gold Medal Game.
Both the Golden Hawks and Mustangs have now qualified for the 2013 CIS Women’s Soccer Championship, which will be hosted by the Toronto Varsity Blues from November 7-10.
The first game of the day saw Laurier beat out the Carleton Ravens 5-4 on penalty kicks after the second half ended with both teams tied at 0-0 and scoreless extra time. With both teams scoring on four of their first five kicks, Amanda Mithrush scored on the first shot in sudden death to take the game and advance to the finals.
“I thought we played poorly tonight and it was just one of those playoff things where I think the occasion got the better of us,” said Laurier head coach Barry MacLean. “Hopefully we’ve now gotten that out of the way so that we can play a normal performance on Sunday.”
The next game looked much the same as the first as Western and Queen’s remained scoreless after regulation and extra time until the Mustangs edged out the Gaels 3-2 on penalty kicks. Western goalkeeper Tori Edgar stopped two shots and scored a goal of her own in the penalty kick round to propel the Mustangs into Sunday’s final
“There were a little bit of nerves,” said Western head coach Martin Painter. “Once we settled in I thought it was one of our best games of the year against a really tough team. It was a great battle tonight.”
Carleton and Queen’s will play on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in the Bronze Medal Game, while Western and Laurier will battle for gold at 2:00 p.m. with both games taking place on Huron Flats Field.
