W-Soccer Roundup: McMaster beats Waterloo, unbeaten in last five
Sept. 18 - Waterloo at McMaster
The McMaster women's soccer team saw its unbeaten streak reach five games with a 1-0 win over the visiting Waterloo Warriors. The Marauders have three wins and two draws in their last five contests.
The first half saw the Marauders with most of the possession time but it was Waterloo that had the best scoring chance off a corner in the 33rd minute. One of the Warriors found herself with an open look after a scramble in front of the McMaster net , but her shot hit the crossbar and stayed out.
McMaster tried to mount some pressure late in the half and a nifty cross from Emma Mangialardi found the foot of Taylor Lambert, whose shot forced the Warrior keeper to make a diving stop to keep the sheet clean. The teams entered intermission tied 0-0.
Looking for its first win of the season Waterloo showed fresher legs to start the second half and pressed the attack, forcing Maroon keeper Brittany Duffey to be sharp. In the 54th minute McMaster's Alessia Marzilli curled a brilliant corner kick into the Waterloo goal, but the referee's whistle waved off the apparent score as the Marauders were called for a violation in the box.
The Marauders ended the scoring drought in the 69th minute when Anne Yeboah corralled a loose ball in the box after the initial save was made and drilled it past the helpless Waterloo keeper.
Now trailing Waterloo was forced to push forward for the equalizer but the Marauder defense kept Duffey from facing any serious threats to maintain the shut-out.
The Marauders are back on the home pitch to face Western on Sunday, Sept. 22. Game time at Ron Joyce Stadium is 1 p.m.

Trent at Ryerson
TORONTO – Three different players scored their first OUA goals for the Ryerson Rams women’s soccer team to help the squad to a 4-1 victory over the Trent Excalibur on Wednesday evening.
Katlyn Rocha (Mississauga, Ont.) opened the scoring in the 10th minute as she finished a breakaway feed to register her first OUA goal and give Ryerson an early 1-0 lead.
Before the end of the half the Excalibur got on the board thanks to a Brandi Yuhasz-Morrison (Windsor, Ont.) goal which evened the score at 1-1 after 45 minutes.
Third-year central defender Sarah Slattery (St. Catharines, Ont.) converted a corner kick into a goal when she headed home the eventual game-winner in the 65th minute for her first OUA goal.
Rebecca Arnott (Whitby, Ont.) also joined in the scoring with her first OUA goal in the 73rd minute with a wonderful strike from the right wing that found the back of the net.
Rocha rounded out the scoring with her second of the game just before time expired.
Prior to Wednesday’s victory the Rams had scored just two goals, both off the foot of Niki Paiva (Waterloo, Ont.) so it was refreshing to have three other players hit the score sheet.
“It’s good to spread the wealth a little bit," said head coach Kevin Souter. "Still a shame Karena Evans (Pickering, Ont.) hasn’t got on the board despite the hard work that she does but we still have some players who can find the back of the net. We’ve been on Rebecca Arnott to shoot the ball – she doesn’t believe in herself at times and her strike – but she scored a fantastic goal tonight.
“Katlyn Rocha is always a busy player for us, causing problems and she had two very composed finishes and Sarah Slattery got her first goal in her Ryerson career after three years which is a nice feather in her cap," Souter said.
Slattery earned yet another MVP selection from the opposing coach at the conclusion of the game, making tonight’s match a little more special. Not only did Slattery score her first goal but she lost a tooth in the process.
“Everyone that knows Sarah can attest that she is one of the nicest girls that you can meet but on the field she’s a warrior. That’s the type of players we like; she’ll take her knocks and get badly bruised now and then and she took one in the cheek today which knocked her back tooth in half but she continued on. She ran over to the sideline with her tooth, gave it to the therapist and said ‘okay, hold that for later, I’ll be back’. That’s just the type of player she is”, said Souter.
Ryerson will look to carry the momentum from Wednesday’s win into the weekend when they play two more matches as they try and earn as many points as possible to earn a postseason berth.
The Rams return to action on Saturday, Sept. 21 when they take on the Queen’s Gaels in Kingston at 1:00 p.m. The following day they will kickoff against the RMC Paladins at 1:00 p.m.
