Lauren Towell earns Algoma bronze at McMaster Invitational
This past weekend, the Algoma Wrestlers debuted their 2015-16 roster at the annual McMaster Invitational in Hamilton, Ontario. Algoma's Lauren Towell earned the first medal of the season, bringing home bronze.
Going 1-2 and winning the bronze medal for Algoma was Lauren Towell at the 51-kg weight class. Towell set a good precedent in her style of wrestling as she was much more aggressive than previous years. Both of Towell's loses were matches that will be winnable by the end of the year, and were beneficial for pointing out technical areas to work on.
Assistant Coach and Algoma prospective student Logan McKinnon had a few great performances and finished the day with a 2-2 record, which was good enough for 4th place. McKinnon showed his superior athleticism in his matches, but allowed his opponents to control him and the pace.
First year wrestler Noodin Shawanda tied for 7th in the men's 57 kilogram. Shawanda had a tough first match, drawing the 2015 OUA Champion and CIS silver medalist Sam Jagas from Brock U. In another tough match, Shawanda lost his second match of the day to Tim Clement, a club wrestler from Kingston who helps coach the Golden Gaels wrestlers.

Lions win three medals at McMaster Open
Members of the York University Lions wrestling team combined to win three medals at the McMaster Open in Hamilton, Ont., on Saturday (Nov. 7).
Second-year wrestler Alexandria Town (Scarborough, Ont.) continued her outstanding season by winning her second straight medal and is now 8-2 on the season. She captured the bronze in the women's 55kg division one week after winning bronze at the Concordia Open in Montreal, and among her wins was a victory over Kristina McLaren from Brock, who is a junior national silver medallist in the same weight class.
York's other two medals came in the men's 130kg weight class from Tyler Tate-Austin (Brampton, Ont.) and Ali Koca (Richmond Hill, Ont.). Tate-Austen, a rookie this year, upset Koca at the meet en route to winning the silver medal, while Koca joined his team on the podium by winning the bronze.
The Lions had a small contingent competing at McMaster. Also placing at the meet were Ihsan Atilan (Toronto), who was sixth in the 100kg division, as well as Gurnek Tak (Brampton, Ont.) and Mustafa Shah (Montreal), who were both ninth in 57kg and 76kg weight classes, respectively.
The Lions will be back in action again this weekend when they travel to London, Ont., to participate in the Western Open on Saturday (Nov. 14).
