El-Nahas wins silver at Ontario Junior Championship
York University Lions rookie wrestler Mohab El-Nahas won the silver medal in the 84kg division at the Ontario junior championships in Hamilton, Ont., on Saturday (Jan. 31).
He was one of four Lions competing at the event. Michael Sturino (Maple, Ont.), Alexandria Town (Scarborough, Ont.) and Colleen Semple (Brampton, Ont.) all just missed out on a medal with fourth-place finishes in their respective weight classes.
After receiving a bye in the first round, El-Nahas began his competition with a 17-12 win over Joban Phulka, and followed that up with an 11-6 victory over Brad MaGarrey to reach the championship bout. He put forth a strong effort in the final, but it was not enough to take down eventual gold-medallist Ignatius Pitt.
In the men's 74kg division, Sturino was defeated 10-0 by Chance Mutuko in the first round, but then knocked off Patrick Morrison 14-4 and Thomas Marshall 9-0 to reach the bronze-medal match, where he was again stopped by Mutuko by a 12-0 score.
Semple finished in fourth place in the 59kg division with a total of three points, earned thanks to a big 10-2 victory over Julia Lei.
Town, wrestling up a weight class at 55kg to prepare for the upcoming OUA championships, was defeated in her first match 17-6 by eventual champion Emily Schafer, but then knocked off Taylor Richard 11-0 in the consolation draw semifinals to reach the bronze-medal match, where she was defeated by Julie Steffler.
The Lions will be off this weekend and will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14 at the OUA championships, which will be hosted by the Laurentian Voyageurs in Sudbury, Ont.
