WRESTLING ROUNDUP: Guelph Open
Guelph, Ont. - On Saturday, January 17th the Gryphon wrestling teams hosted the Guelph Open at the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre. Wrestlers from across Canada and the United States were in attendance as a total of 39 schools and wrestling clubs took part in the all day event.
Leading the way for the Gryphons was fifth year standout Kelsey Gsell (Saskatoon, SK) who was competing in the Senior Women's 82 kilogram weight class. Kelsey, the reigning CIS gold medalist, went undefeated and did not have a single point scored against her. As a result, Kelsey was named Gryphon Athlete of the Week for the period ending January 19, 2015.
Elsewhere on the women's side, second year Brampton native Alison Carrow finished second in the women's 69 kilogram weight class.
On the men's side, 6-1, 325 pound John Fitzgerald finished sixth in the Senior Men 125 kilogram weight class.
The Gryphon varsity wrestlers will be in action again on Saturday, January 31 in London at the Western Open.

Lakehead Wrestlers Compete at Guelph Open
Lakehead's wrestling team sent a select few to the Guelph Open on Saturday, to compete against an international field of athletes from 40 different clubs and varsity programs.
Chris Waltner (57kg) and Tyler Ashurst (74kg) represented the men's program, while Megan Smith (48kg) and Kira White (63kg) were suited up for the Thunderwolves' women's program.
While all four wrestlers finished out of the Top 6, it was a good test against a very competitive field of wrestlers.
Waltner went 1-2 in his matches on the day, first defeating Brock Badger Lenford Morris before dropping his next 2. Tyler Ashurst also went 1-2 on the day.
Kira White went 1-2 on the day, and Megan Smith 0-2.
Assistant coach Dustin Helwig:
"All our wrestlers had a tough day, but they elevated their scoring skills on some of the best in the country. Next weekend we look to go to Western University to take on our OUA rivals again."
