Badger wrestlers capture double gold at Brock University Open
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University men's and women's wrestling teams both captured team gold at the 2015 Brock Open.
The Brock women captured eight medals in total, led by gold medalists Kristina Mclaren (51kg), Carlene Sluberski (55kg) and Jessica Brouilette (63kg). Jade Parsons (51kg), Indira Moores (59kg), Keegan Collie (67kg) and Olivia Di Bacco (72kg) all finished second overall in their respective weight classes. Rounding out the Badgers top finishers were Marissa Sorrell (67kg) who finished third at 67kg and Emily Schaefer who was fourth at 55kg.
The Brock men won five different weight classes. Sam Jagas (57kg), Brian Cowan (61kg), Tyler Rowe (72kg), Matrixx Ferreira (76kg) and Andrii Vorontsov (100kg) all took home gold. Finishing in second place were Zack Falcioni (61kg), Nick Rowe (68kg) and CJ Hudson (72kg). Rounding out the men's top finishers were Mitchell Winchester (61kg) and Ignatius Pitt (90kg).
Maclaren was named the Outstanding Women's Wrestler while Tyler Rowe took home the Outstanding Men's Wrestler award.

Pierzchala, Town win medals at Brock Open
York University Lions wrestlers Greg Pierzchala and Alexandria Town both reached the podium in their respective weight classes at the Brock Open in St. Catharines, Ont., on Saturday (Jan. 10).
Pierzchala (Barrie, Ont.) won the silver medal in the 76kg division, continuing his tremendous season with another podium finish. His only loss at the tournament was to Matrixx Ferreira from the Brock Badgers, a two-time CIS champion who finished first in the weight class.
Town (Scarborough, Ont.), competing in her rookie season, has steadily seen her results improve as she gets used to CIS competition. This past weekend she won the bronze medal in the 51kg division, with her only loss coming to gold medallist Tina Maclaren, who went on to earn the tournament's outstanding women's wrestler award.
Also competing at the meet was Tristan Smith, who finished in sixth place in the 57kg division.
A handful of Lions will be in Guelph, Ont., this weekend for the Guelph Open on Saturday (Jan. 17), and the entire team will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Western Open in London, Ont.

Ahmed leads Marauder wrestlers to team bronze at Brock Open
The CIS no. 4-ranked Marauder men's wrestling team finished third at the Brock Open hosted by the no. 1-ranked Badgers on Saturday, while the women's team finished sixth.
McMaster's top performer was rookie Omar Ahmed, who won gold in the 65kg division by defeating American Nick Arroyo in the final. His was the only gold for the Marauders on the day, with Eric Steffler providing a silver in the 82kg class and Ahmed Shamiya (72kg) and Robbie Smith (54kg) winning bronze.
Ahmed Ramadan finished second in the heavyweight 130kg division that consisted solely of he and Guelph's John Fitzgerald. Veteran heavyweight Andrew Ballach finished fourth in the 100kg division, while Chris Garneau placed fourth in the 68kg division after losing out to a former member of the South African national team.
The sole podium place for the Marauder women came courtesy of Alyshia Anderson, who won bronze in the 82kg divsion. Lightweight entrants Monica Wood (51kg) and Nicole Mazara (55kg) completed the scoring for McMaster, both finishing fifth.
Saturday presents a new challenge for the Marauders in the form of the Guelph Open hosted by the CIS no. 8-ranked Gryphons. Traditionally well attended, the Guelph tournament stands as one of the toughest fields over the course of the OUA season.
