WRESTLING ROUNDUP: Harry Geris Memorial Dual Meet
Women take first, men claim bronze at Harry Geris Memorial Dual Meet
LONDON, Ont. – The women's and men's wrestling team were well represented this past weekend as hosts of the Harry Geris Memorial Dual Meet, placing first and third overall, respectively. The program had a number of strong individual performances too, as Valerie Ouellette (48 kg), Madi Parks (51 kg), Steven Takahashi (57 kg), and Kyle Bonk (100 kg) all went undefeated in their matches.
The Harry Geris Duals, taking place at Alumni Hall, is the only tournament that has a head-to-head dual format, where teams directly compete against one another team in their respective CIS weight classes. This format emphasizes the overall team depth of each of the 11 men's and eight women's weight classes. The tournament is named in honour of Harry Geris, who passed away in April 2008. Geris is a past coach at Western and the London-Western Wrestling Club, and has represented Canada on three Olympic teams.
The Western Mustang women's team topped this weekend off in first place, with Guelph Gryphon's in second, and the Laurentian Voyageurs third. Western's Senior wrestler Ouellette found success this weekend by using her experience to catch her opponents off-guard with her left sided head-and-arm throw. The women's team was also represented by Julia Lei in the 55kg weight class, Alysaa Medeiros at 59kg, Anna Mckee at 63kg, Alexa Momy at 67kg, Michelle Szilagyi at 72kg, and Emma Tedball at 82kg.
On the men's side, the McMaster Maurauders prevailed with a first place finish, followed by the Guelph Gryphons, Western Mustangs, York Lions, and Laurentian Voyageurs. Steven Takahashi's first match against Laurentian's Majok Deng was off to a bad start, as he experience a lower body injury early, but Takahashi was able to come back after taking injury time and win the match. His teammate Kyle Bonk defeated McMaster's Andrew Ballach 10-0 with impressive technical superiority. Bonk wrestled a strong tactical match from the "outside," avoiding Ballach's throws and attacking with his speed with standing position leg attacks.
The Mustang men's team was also represented by Eric Renaud in the 54kg weigh class, Nick Xiang at 61kg, Dave Nisenbaum and Lauchlin MacDonald at 65kg, Caleb Rutner at 68kg, Alec Bauer and Jamie Golob at 72kg, Randeep Gill at 76kg, Ingmar Salvador-Guzman at 82kg, and Kevin Marshall at 90kg.
The Mustangs are now looking forward to preparing for the Ontario Senior Open Championships in Hamilton, Ont. next weekend, November 22, 2014.

Maraduer men finish first at Western Harry Geris Dual Tournament
The Marauder men's wrestlers enjoyed a fantastic early result in London this past weekend, finishing first among the five teams who competed at the Harry Geris Duals Tournament at Western. The host Mustangs, Guelph Gryphons, Laurentian Voyageurs and York Lions also competed in the event.
Ahmed Shamiya and Joban Phulka both went undefeated in four bouts, while Chris Garneau was also undefeated in three maches in the 68kg weight class. Rohan Cornelio and Omar Ahmed were 2-0 against outside competition, before splitting two matches between one another.
The unique dual format of Saturday's event pitted each of the teams against one another in a round-robin format, with wrestlers from each weight class fighting their opposite number from the team featured in that round.
While the Marauder men were competing in London, McMaster's women were involved in a training camp in Eastern Michigan.
McMaster returns to competition on Saturday, when the Marauders take part in the Ontario Senior Provincial Championships being hosted in Hamilton at Bishop Ryan high school.
