Western's Barry named CIS female athlete of the week
Barry, a fifth-year social sciences student, was named OUA’s most outstanding female wrestler for the second time in her career after she claimed her fifth individual gold medal in as many years and helped the Mustangs dethrone six-time defending titlist Brock in the women’s team competition at the conference championships, in Toronto. The senior from London, Ont., went undefeated in the 55-kilogram weight class, including a dominating 4-0 victory over Lakehead’s Karleah Bonk in the gold-medal final. Barry hopes to pick up her first CIS individual title in two weeks at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton (Feb. 28 – March 1) after earning silver in 2010, 2012 and 2013.
Dalhousie volleyball player Desiree Nouwen, UQAM basketball player Jessica Lubin and Saskatchewan wrestler Annie Monteith were also nominated for the women’s award.
Post, a fourth-year history student from Victoria, scored a remarkable 73 points in two games to lead the Stingers (8-6) to a pair of hard-fought wins over UQAM, 88-87, and Laval, 77-73. Last Thursday against UQAM, the 6-foot-3 forward tallied 33 points in 32 minutes on the court, including 18 in the fourth quarter alone, and hit a clutch three-point basket with 34 seconds left in regulation to tie the affair at 87-87. He was once again at his best when it counted the most on Saturday as he scored 26 of his career-high 40 points in the second half to lift Concordia over the Rouge et Or and into a tie for second place in the RSEQ standings, with two games remaining in the regular season.
