Mustangs grab 7 medals at Western Open, travel to Colorado
LONDON, Ont.—This weekend was a busy one for the Mustangs wrestling team, as the squad was split between competition at home and competition across the border. Several Mustangs travelled to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to participate in the highly competitive Dave Schultz Memorial International, while the remainder of the team was at home in Thames Hall for the Western Open on Saturday, February 1, 2014.
Seven Mustangs received medals in the Western Open, with four silver and three bronze medals in individual competition. In addition, both the men's and women's team finished second overall at the Western Open among the 27 teams represented.
The Western Open is an annual tournament, attracting teams from Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Quebec and Ontario. Even the United States was represented by a women's team from Pennsylvania. The Western Open is the last OUA event in the schedule before the wrestling team competes at the OUA Championships.
Silver medalists at the Western Open include Val Ouellette (51 kg), Ameed Lakhani (54 kg), Josh Proctor (68 kg) and Sammy Hanna (82 kg). In addition, Alexa Momy (59 kg), Mara Pritchard (82 kg) and Kyle Bonk-Dann (90 kg) each took home bronze medals.
To secure her silver medal, Ouellette came from behind to pin Katie Dutchak of Saskatoon in the 51 kg women's semi-final, dropping to UNB's Alyssa Cleaves in the final. Hanna, a kinesiology student, had a very strong tournament, only losing to Brock's Mattrix Ferriera in the gold medal match. Proctor also lost a close final, 4-5, to National Team member CJ Hudson. Along with Ferriera, Hudson was also representing the Brock Wrestling Club.
During this time, five members of the Mustangs teams travelled to compete in the Dave Schultz Memorial Tournament in Colorado. The highly competitive tournament featured 22 countries across the globe. With head coach Ray Takahashi coaching his team at the Western Open, the team travelled with Mustangs high performance coach, Saeed Azarbayjani.
No medals were won at the international tournament, due in large part to an injury sustained by Steven Takahashi. Takahashi sustained a lower body injury in his first match and lost against Kyle Hutter of Titan Mercury USA, finding himself forced to withdraw from the tournament. Riley Otto lost both of his matches at the 86 kg weight category.
In the women's event, Madi Parks won her first match 5-3, but subsequently then lost her next two matches against Europeans Anna Lukasiak (Poland) and Mercedesz Denes (Hungary). Mustangs co-captain Brianne Barry went 2-2 with two wins by pin in the 53 kg class. Co-captain Larissa D-Alleva did not win a match, going 0-2 for the day.
D'Alleva and Barry are both staying in Colorado for two extra days in order to train with the women's international training camp in preparation for the upcoming provincial and national championships.
The OUA Championships begin two weeks after the Western Open on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at York University, while the CIS Championship takes place from Friday, February 28 to Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the University of New Brunswick.
