Banner Season: Trent punches ticket to OUA finals to face defending champion Gaels
Oshawa, Ont. (via Ontario Tech Ridgebacks) – The Queen’s Gaels have the opportunity to win back-to-back OUA women’s lacrosse championships after winning their semifinal 11-7 over the previously undefeated Western Mustangs.
Western entered the championship with a 13-0 record and as the top seed from the west.
Queen’s, the second seed in the east and defending champions, led the semifinal from the get go and 9-3 at halftime. Western closed the gap slightly early in the fourth quarter, but ultimately were unable to rebound from their slow start.
Christina Holmes and Jordan Kummer each scored three times to lead the Gaels to victory. Katie De Snoo scored twice to lead Western’s offence.
In the first semifinal of the day the Trent Excalibur earned a 16-9 win over the host Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. Trent, like Queen’s, led from the beginning of the game and never looked back.
Player of the game Mackenzie Robinson scored the first three Trent goals of the game and finished with a team-high four in their victory. Nicole Martindale scored a game-high six goals, while Ontario Tech player of the game Caitlyn Cote scored three times for the Ridgebacks.
Sunday the Ridgebacks and Mustangs will play for OUA bronze at 11:30 a.m., followed by the championship game at 1:30 p.m.
To begin the final day of the championship McMaster and Guelph will play the seventh place game at 8 a.m. Toronto and Laurier play for fifth at 9:45 a.m.
