York 0 Toronto 7
Rookie forward Louie Bieman scored two goals and added one assist as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the York Lions 7-0 in their 2017-18 season opener on Thursday night (Oct. 19) at Varsity Arena.
Veteran forward Meagan O'Brien added two goals, with rookie netminder Madeline Albert making 22 saves to earn the shut out in her first career start.
Bieman opened the scoring midway through the first period as she received a cross-crease pass from veteran Kassie Roache and made no mistake putting it in the yawning cage.
Fourth-year forward Lauren Straatman put the Blues up by two just over two minutes later, receiving a centering pass from Roache and one-timing it in from close range.
Toronto was up 2-0 after 20 minutes.
The Lions found themselves in penalty trouble midway through the second frame and Toronto capitalized. Bieman potted her second of the night, skating off the boards and wiring a shot past Lions goalie Eva Hall.
U of T went up 4-0 just before the second intermission as fourth-year forward Meagan O'Brien buried a Jessica Robichaud rebound for her first goal of the season.
Third-year defenceman Cristine Chao got in on the action as she came out of the penalty box and capitalized on a Stephanie Ayres rebound early in the third period. O'Brien netted her second of the game off a goal mouth scramble midway through the final frame and Laura Ellis added an empty netter in the final minute, scoring her first career goal as a Varsity Blue.
The Varsity Blues are back in action tomorrow night as they travel to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks at Brantford Civic Centre. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.

Ryerson 4 Guelph 3
GUELPH, Ont. - As the Ryerson Rams traveled to Guelph to take on the league’s defending champions, they came out of the game finding champions in themselves.
Ryerson won Thursday’s game against the Guelph Gryphons by a final score of 4-3, and the Rams now hold a perfect 2-0 record to open up the season.
The entire game was packed with action. The Gryphons opened the scoring early in the game, as Guelph forward Kaitlin Lowy (Toronto, Ont.) tallied a goal on the team’s first shot of the match, just 1:46 into the first period. The Gryphons scored another goal, again in the first, this one coming from Guelph forward Kelly Gribbons (Port Elgin, Ont.) on the man-advantage.
The Rams fought back just before the period ended, as captain Ailish Forfar (Sharon, Ont.) scored with just 35 seconds remaining in the first. The back-and-forth play continued in the second, as Ryerson and Guelph each tallied a goal. Ryerson’s second goal of the game came off a beautiful shot from Kryshanda Green (Brampton, Ont.), who netted her 3rd goal of the season. The Rams headed into the dressing room at the end of the second period trailing Guelph by a score of 3-2, and came out ready to play in the third.
Green tallied her second goal of the game on the powerplay with 14 minutes remaining in the game. Goaltender Rachel Seeley had a strong showing throughout the game, making some of her best saves midway through the third during a 5-on-3 penalty kill.
Alex Rodriguez (Toronto, Ont.) completed the comeback for Ryerson. As the Rams took to their second powerplay of the game, it was Rodriguez’s shot from the point that put the Rams up 4-3 with just three minutes left to play in the game.
Ryerson’s special teams play was, yet again, the story of the game. The Rams went 2-for-2 on the powerplay, and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill. The Rams saw another strong performance from Seeley who, in her second game of the season, has helped lead the team to a perfect record.
Ryerson returns home on Sunday for their home opener against the Laurier Golden Hawks. Puck drop is at 2:15 pm and as always, the game will be broadcast live on OUA.tv.

Western 6 Nipissing 3
NORTH BAY, Ont. – A four goal first period led the Western Mustangs to a season opening 6-3 win over the Nipissing Lakers on Friday afternoon at North Bay Gardens.

Things would quiet down a bit until the 16-minute mark when the Mustangs took advantage of a penalty to the Lakers with Clark scoring a power play marker off assists from Alyssa Chiarello and Taylor.
Nipissing got on the board a little over a minute later thanks to a goal from Jade Gauthier, however the Mustangs responded in the final minute of the frame with a goal from Rice to take a 4-1 lead after the opening period.
After neither team was able to solve the other in the second, Gauthier scored her second goal of the night to cut the Western lead to 4-2 less than two minutes into the final frame.
The scoreboard remained the same until Dufour scored her first career OUA goal on an empty net marker with 3:55 left in the contest. That set the stage for an exciting final minute that saw Maria Dominico score on the power play for the Lakers with 30 seconds left before Edie Levesque iced it for the Mustangs with an empty net goal at 19:45 to give Western a 6-3 win.
Western will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they head to Sudbury to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs. Game time is set for 3:50 p.m. at the Countryside Arena and will be streamed live on OUA.tv

Guelph 4 York 1
TORONTO, Ont. - The two-time defending OUA champion Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team picked up their first win of the 2017-18 season on Saturday afternoon at York University with a 4-1 road win over the York Lions. After York jumped out to a 1-0 lead late in the 1st period, the Gryphons responded by tying the game in the 2nd before using a three-goal 3rd period to seal the three points. With the result, the Gryphons improve to 1-1-0 on the season while York falls to 0-3-0.
Gryphons third year defenceman Laura Crowdis picked a good time to come up with the first goal of her Gryphon career. After suffering a 4-3 loss on home ice in their season opener on Thursday, the Gryphons found themselves trailing 1-0 to York late in the 2nd period. That's when the Gryphons received a spark from Crowdis, an Accounting major from Oakville, who unleashed a shot with three minutes remaining in the 2nd period that found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
The Gryphons, who struggled at times to generate chances offensively, would find the breakthrough in the 3rd period third year forward Claire Merrick scoring the game-winner. York goalie Roxanne Kis was tough to beat on the night, turning away 32 of the 34 shots sent her way. But trailing late, the Lions were forced to pull their goalie for an extra skater, which the Gryphons took advantage of with both Kaitlin Lowy and Ashlee Lawrence scoring empty netters to push the lead to 4-1.
U of G goalie Valerie Lamenta made 30 saves for her first win of the season.
The game marked the first of a three-game road trip for the Gryphons who will next be in action on Thursday, October 26 in Oshawa versus the UOIT Ridgebacks. After that, the Gryphs head to Kingston for a Saturday afternoon showdown with the Queen's Gaels on October 28.

UOIT 1 Waterloo 0
WATERLOO, Ont. – Nicole Zabel (Palmerston, Ont.) scored the lone goal for the UOIT women's hockey team in their 1-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday afternoon, the Ridgebacks first win of the year.
This puts UOIT 1-1-0 so far this season after a tough preseason left them without a victory.
"It's good to get that first one," said head coach Justin Caruana. "The girls have been doing all the right things so to finally get rewarded and see the hard work payoff is great for the team."
After two goal-less periods, which saw the Warriors outshoot the Ridgebacks 20-15, Zabel's goal came just 1:19 into the final 20 minutes. Her goal came on the power play after Rachel Marriott's checking to the head penalty at the end of the second period.
This was her third goal with the Ridgebacks, while Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.) earned her 37th assist with UOIT.
Briar Hughes (Thornton, Ont.) made 28 saves for her second OUA shutout. Stephanie Sluys made 23 saves for the Warriors in the loss.
"The team played a solid 60 minutes from the goalie all the way up to the forwards, with everyone coming ready to compete and willing to do what it took to get the job done," said Caruana. "The key is not getting too high after that win as there's lots more work to do as we prepare for a tough opponent in Brock tomorrow."
Sunday the Ridgebacks will wrap up their weekend in St. Catharines against the Brock Badgers, who lost their opening game of the season on Saturday to the Queen's Gaels.

Laurier 0 Ryerson 1
Though 65 minutes of hockey and six rounds of the shootout were barely enough to solve today’s matchup, the Ryerson Rams ultimately topped the Laurier Golden Hawks by a final score of 1-0, walking away with another two points and remaining undefeated through the first three games of the season.
Heading into the game, the Rams stood undefeated atop of the OUA’s standings, tied for first with Queen’s, Toronto and Western. Sydney Authier (Wallaceburg, Ont.) took to the net for the first time in the regular season, and had a solid showing throughout the game. Authier stopped 20 of 20 shots, earning herself a shutout in her first game of the season.
Though Ryerson dominated in the shot column, outshooting the Golden Hawks 35-20, Laurier had several high-quality scoring chances throughout the game. The back-and-forth action continued through the first three periods, and the game remained scoreless after 60 minutes of action.
Five minutes of three-on-three overtime solved nothing, and the game headed to a shootout. The game was finally decided in the sixth round, as Ryerson’s Brooklyn Gemmill (Cambridge, Ont.) was able to put a goal past Laurier goaltender Hannah Miller (Georgetown, Ont.).
Gemmill’s beautiful move ultimately pushed the Rams past the Golden Hawks, as Ryerson left the game with a 1-0 shootout victory.
“I’ve been practicing the same move in practice for a couple of weeks now,” said Gemmill. “I thought I’d try it against this bigger goalie. She was really good up-high and we needed to move her, so that’s what I tried to do.”
Head coach Lisa Haley says that the win was not as satisfying as it could have been.
“I don’t think it was a satisfying win, but we’re definitely grateful to be able to get 2 points out of it,” said Haley after the game. “The dangerous shots today were generated pretty equally on both sides, […] and Laurier’s goalie made some good timely saves when she needed to.”

Queen’s 2 Waterloo 3
It was looking like the Waterloo women's hockey season was going to get off to a nightmarish start. Two home games to start the season, a 1-0 loss to the UOIT Ridgebacks, and now a 2-0 deficit to the Queen's Gaels with just under eight minutes to play in the third.
But we've seen it from this team before, and we'll see it again; resiliency. Waterloo went on to score two late goals followed by an overtime winner off the stick of Hannah Street (Shoal Lake/) as the Warriors picked up a huge 3-2 overtime victory. Taylor Reimer (Morden/) was spectacular in her first start of the year, turning aside 31 shots in the win.
The best forward in the home opening loss, Maryn Caragata (Etobicoke/) finally got the Warriors on the board, the first goal of the season for the black and gold at 12:38 of the third period. Sarah Rettinger (Kitchener/) made a beauty cross seam pass to Caragata who fired it past Stephanie Pascal on the glove side, cutting the Gaels lead in half. Emma Cheeseman (Waterloo/) picked up the second assist on the Warrior tally.
The goal seemed to spark life on the Warriors bench as the home side found their legs and put everything they had left into the final seven minutes. And that hard work paid off as Alison Hanson (Toronto/) netted a goal mouth scramble with 41 seconds remaining in the period. Stephanie Digness (Aldergrove/) and Carata picked up the helpers on the equalizer.
Overtime saw end to end action before Rachel Marriott (Waterloo/) picked up the puck in the neutral zone, weaved her way past the Gaels defenders and slid a backhand pass to Street who made a perfect redirect past a helpless Pascal for the games winning goal.
They say timing is everything and what a time it was for Street to fire home her second career goal.
"It was a grind for us today, but the girls stuck with it and it paid off," said Head Coach Shaun Reagan. "I felt we played a much better game in our season opener but that's the way it goes sometimes and we'll take the two points today. We've got a lot of things to clean up before our next games but I'm happy with our overall effort this weekend."
The Warriors will battle Laurier next Saturday, October 28 at the Memorial Rec Complex. Puck drop goes at 7:30pm.
