ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Brock University Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce Olympic gold medal winner Margot Page as the new head coach of the women's hockey team and Sara Bauer as the new associate head coach.
"This dynamic duo is one of the best announcements we have made in years," said Brock University assistant athletic director Chris Critelli. "We are very excited to have Margot and Sara on board. This will be exactly what our team needs. Our alumni will be thrilled and the Niagara Community will be back to being a part of our women's hockey program. They will bring their success with them, not to mention the passion and energy they have for Brock women's hockey."
"The Brock men's hockey team is extremely excited about the appointment of both Margot and Sara," said Brock men's hockey head coach Murray Nystrom. "We look forward to working with each other to help grow the Badgers hockey brand at the Seymour-Hannah Centre and throughout Niagara."
Margot brings a wealth of knowledge to the Brock program both as a player and a coach. She played for the Canadian National women's ice hockey team from 1989 to 1994, winning three gold medals at the IIHF Women's World Hockey Championships (1990, 1992, 1994).
"I am really thrilled about getting the opportunity to work with the women's hockey program," said Page. "Working alongside Sara is going to be a great experience for me because she is so passionate about the game and has a strong hockey mind. I can't wait to get started working with the men's program as well and continue to build Brock hockey within our community and across the OUA and CIS."
As a coach, Page spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach with the Brock women's program. Previously, she coached the National Women's Under-22 team, leading them to gold medals at the 2003 and 2004 Air Canada Cup and 2010 MLP Cup. In addition, she was an assistant coach on the women's national team from 2004 to 2006 and was a part of the gold-medal winning coaching staff at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy. Previous to the winter games, Page won a silver medal at the 2005 IIHF Women's World Championships and was part of the coaching staff that claimed gold at the 2004 and 2005 Four Nations Cups. She was also the coach for NCAA Division I Niagara Purple Eagles women's ice hockey program for ten seasons.
Bauer has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach with the Badgers. She currently runs the Sara Bauer Academy and is highly involved with the St. Catharines Jr. Badgers program. Sara has also had the privilege of working alongside Belfry Hockey founder Darryl Belfry, a pioneer in research-based hockey development.
"I am very excited for this opportunity to help lead the Badger women's hockey team, and to contribute to the great things happening at Brock University," said Bauer. "I look forward to challenging and inspiring our student-athletes to pursue their fullest potential, to collaborating with the men's team, and to the unique opportunity to work with Margot to build a program of excellence with close ties to our community."
Bauer had an outstanding collegiate career playing four seasons for the Wisconsin Badgers. In 2006 she led the Badgers to an NCAA Championship title while earning the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, awarded to the top women's college ice hockey player. In 2007 Bauer was named the WCHA Player of the Year and was the NCAA's leading scoring, registering a career best 72 points in 41 games. She ended her Wisconsin career with 218 points adding 80 goals and 138 assists in 152 career games.
Other career accolades include WCHA Rookie of the Year, 4-time team Offensive Player of the Year, 2-time WCHA Player of the Year, 2-time All-WCHA First Team, 2-time All-USCHO First Team, 2-time USCHO Player of the Year and 2-time AHCA First-Team All-American.
