OTTAWA (CIS) – Stephanie Sluys, a hockey player from the University of Waterloo, and Tyler Scott, a basketball player from the University of Prince Edward Island, are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 16, 2014.
Sluys, a first-year kinesiology student from Clinton, Ont., turned aside all 52 pucks fired her way this past week as she led the Warriors (3-5-3) to back-to-back shutout victories, including a 1-0 upset of nationally seventh-ranked Guelph (6-1-2). The 5-foot-11 freshman opened the two-game set last Thursday with a 30-save performance in an overtime win over the Gryphons and was perfect again two days later against Brock, stopping the Badgers' 22 shots in a 3-0 decision to earn her third whitewash in five starts this season. Sluys currently ranks fourth in the OUA conference with a 1.40 goals against average and a .941 save percentage.
StFX basketball player Lindsay Lessard, Ottawa hockey player Carol-Ann Upshall and UBC volleyball player Danielle Brisebois were also nominated for the women's award.
Scott, a second-year business administration student from Halifax, averaged a remarkable 33 points per game to lead the Panthers (3-1) to a pair of home wins over the Cape Breton Capers (2-2), ranked sixth in the country going into the doubleheader. The 6-foot-2 guard was unstoppable in Friday's 93-85 victory with a game-high 38 points as well as eight rebounds and three assists, and was once again the top scorer in Saturday's 107-106 win with 28 points, including the game-winning free throw. The talented sophomore currently leads CIS with an average of 28.8 points per contest.
Laval volleyball player Vicente Ignacio Parraguirre Villalobos, Waterloo hockey player Mike Morrison and Mount Royal hockey player Cody Cartier were the other male nominees.
