Queens 0 @ Guelph 1
Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team defeated the Queen's Gaels with an exciting 1-0 final score at the Gryphon Centre on Saturday afternoon. The Gryphons move to 4-1-1, dropping the Gaels to 5-1-2 for their first loss in regulation time on the season.
Brittany St. James (Orono, Ont.) would score the Gryphon's winning goal at 5:19 in the first period of play with Marci Landman (Alma, Ont.) and Gina Murray (Lucknow, Ont.) on the assists. It would be a defensive battle from both teams from that point on.
Despite pulling netminder Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) in the last minute of play and grabbing a man advantage at 19:56 after Gryphon player Katherine Bailey (Lucan, Ont.) was called for body checking, traffic in front of the net would keep the Gaels from tying up the game and the Gryphons would remain undefeated on home ice after their third home win of the season.
Stephanie Nehring made 16 saves on the game, and the Gryphon team would tally up 25 shots on Lahonen. After the game, assistant coach Scott McMillan said it was a "Complete effort from the whole team for 60 minutes. Queens is a really good team, it takes 60 minutes of effort to beat them. We need to be led by our leaders, and tonight we were. Both goalies were great. Steph lead the way for us tonight. And our veteran players were outstanding."
The Gryphons will hit the ice again on Sunday November 9th at the Gryphon Centre against the UOIT Ridgebacks with the puck set to drop at 2:00 p.m.

Ryerson 2 @ Waterloo 0
The Waterloo Warriors women's hockey team finished strong on Saturday afternoon against the Ryerson Rams. But it was their start that sunk them.
The visiting Rams limited the Warriors to 8 shots through 2 periods and scored the game's only two goals in the first 25 minutes of play, as Ryerson topped Waterloo 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Columbia Icefield Arena in Waterloo.
The loss was Waterloo's sixth in a row, sending their record to 1-4-3 on the season. Meanwhile, Ryerson won their second game in a row and improved their record to 3-4-0, and climbing past the Warriors in the OUA standings at the 1/3 mark of the season.
Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) was solid for the Warriors in a losing cause, as she kicked aside 24 shots in defeat. Rams netminder Alex Armstrong came up big when her team needed her, making 20 saves for her first career CIS shutout.
The Rams were dominant in the game's opening 20 minutes, outshooting the Warriors 15-4 in the period. Bouwhuis' heroics kept Waterloo in touch, but Blair Malthaner opened the scoring for the visitors just past the midway point of the first period.
The Rams added to their lead at the 4:50 mark of the second when Melissa Wronzberg found twine on the power play to put Ryerson up 2-0. The Rams then went into defensive shutdown mode, frustrating the host Warriors and rendering them punchless. By the time the second period had ended, Waterloo had registered only 8 shots on goal.
The Warriors' offense came to life in the third, but Armstrong stopped all comers. The Warriors outshot Ryerson 12-7 in the final stanza, but they were unable to crack the goose egg.
Waterloo will now turn their attention to another visitor from the province's capital, as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues come to visit on Sunday. Puck drop at the Columbia Icefield Arena is slated for 2:30pm.

York 3 @ Western 6
LONDON, Ont. – The Mustangs women's hockey team extended their winning streak to six games Saturday afternoon after downing the York Lions 6-3 in an intense home ice battle at London's Thompson Arena.
"I thought we played extremely well. There were some questionable calls in the third period and we lost our composure. I give [York] credit, they battled back but we hung on and toughed it out," said Mustangs head coach Chris Higgins. "We played well, but it's hard to kill a six on three for six, seven, eight minutes right, so they are going to score."
With the win, the Mustangs currently sit in second place in the OUA standings with a 6-0-1 record while the York Lion's 5-4-0 record on the season places them in fifth.
Mustangs defender Emma Pearson got the early lead for the Mustangs with just a minute and a half into the action, as she picked up the puck just inside of the Lion's blue line and fired off a slap shot on Lion's netminder Megan Lee to find the back of the net and give the Mustangs a one-point advantage.
The Lions worked hard to respond to the early Mustang goal, but with the purple and white fighting just as hard to maintain the lead, neither team could find the scoreboard before the period ran down, sending the match into the first intermission with a score of 1-0.
The Mustangs dominated the second frame and challenged Lee's strength between the posts as the purple and white outshot the Lions 11 to three. Mustang third-year forward, Brianna Iazzolino has been leading the purple and white in assists all season, but in Saturday afternoon's action she switched things up and added her first goal of the season to further the Mustangs lead 2-0.
The Mustangs continued to dominate the Lions and with only 29 seconds left in the period, Brittany Clapham made her season scoring debut as she picked up the puck from a scramble in front of the Lions net and moved the puck past Lee to give Western a 3-0 lead heading into the break.
Mustang Casey Rosen scored an early third period goal to extend the purple and white lead to 4-0. The Lions responded by putting on a nailbiting performance as the team unleashed a strong offensive attack on the penalty burdened Mustangs. With two of the purple and white in the penalty box midway through the period, the Lions pulled Lee from the net to give them a six-on-three empty net power play. The move paid off for the red and white as Megan Finlay sank the puck in the top right corner of Kelly Campbell's net at 10:16.
The Lions kept Lee out of the net for the face-off and continued their six-on-three attack against the Mustangs. With the heavy pressure, the Lions Stephanie Dovaston was able to cut the Mustangs lead 4-2 as she put the puck past Campbell to score at the 11:56 mark.
With Lee still out of the action as the red and white tried to make a third period comeback, Mustang Kendra Broad capitalized on the empty net opportunity with a long shot that slid across the Lions undefended goal line, extending the Mustangs lead to 5-2.
Despite the Mustang goal, the Lions stuck with their six-player offensive strategy and as a result, the Lions Lisa Stathopulos was able to find the back of Campbell's net for a third time.
The Mustangs responded by showing the Lions just how vulnerable an empty net can be as Sydney Kidd put another goal on the board and rounded out the period's scoring frenzy with a score of 6-3. Although the Lions were able to put themselves back into the game, they were unable to over throw the Mustangs advantage.
The Mustangs will return to action on Saturday, November 15 as the travel to Toronto to take on the Varsity Blues. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.

Laurentian 1 @ Nipissing 4
Despite two dominant periods, it took a flurry in the third period for the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team to pick up their second straight win.
The Lakers used a three-goal third period as they cruised to a 4-1 win over the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs.
Kylie Thomson, Taylor Murphy and Zosia Davis' second goal of the game, all in the third, earned the Lakers two points and their second win in a row, a week after defeating the Queens Gaels in a shootout.
The Lakers got off to a strong start, coming out firing in the first period as they peppered the Voyageurs net, but it took until late in the period for them to break the goose-egg.
Davis broke in on a rush and while she was cutting to the left, she ripped a shot to the top shelf over the goaltender's trapper, making it 1-0 Lakers.
The lone goal of the second came from the Voyageurs, who tied the game early in the period.
The scores stayed that way until the third, when the Lakers broke out and scored two goals in 21 seconds.
Thomson's first of the year, followed by Murphy's slick backhand goal quickly made it 3-1 Nipissing.
A late empty-net goal by Davis seal the victory and the two points for the Lakers.
Sabrina Picard wasn't busy, but was good when called upon.
She finished the game with the win after making 13 saves.
The Lakers are back in action next weekend when they host the York Lions in their lone game of the weekend, Saturday at 3 p.m.
UOIT fell 4-1 to No. 8 ranked Guelph, as the Gryphons scored two late third period goals to end a Ridgeback comeback attempt.
The Ridgebacks last win at the Gryphon Centre came back on Oct. 8, 2011. Since that win, UOIT has dropped four straight decisions including their first-ever playoff game.
Sunday afternoon's game was closer than the scoreline would indicate, as UOIT trailed 2-1 in the third period and were outshooting Guelph 6-0 in the final 20 minutes. Jessica Pinkerton of Oshawa and Averi Nooren would score on Guelph's two lone shots in the final three minutes of the game including an empty netter, as the Gryphons remained perfect on home ice.
The loss puts an end to UOIT's three-game win streak and five-game point streak.
Three streaks that did continue for UOIT were the point streaks of freshmen Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.), Kassidy Nauboris (Brampton, Ont.) and Nicole Gorda (Edmonton, Alta.), as they connected to score UOIT's only goal. Gorda has registered at least one point in the last five games while Ball and Nauboris have had at least one in their last four games. The trio have combined for 18 points (seven goals & 11 assists) in their last five games.
Tori Campbell (Saskatoon, Sask.) made 18 saves in goal for UOIT while Oshawa native Stephanie Nehring had 16 for the Gryphons.
UOIT is 3-1-0 after four games of their seven-game road trip and will head to Kingston on Saturday for an evening affair against the No. 4 ranked Queen's Gaels (6-1-2).
Neu had two power play goals and one assist, while Fickel recorded three helpers. Christina Ieradi had the other Badgers goal.
With her three assists, Fickel (48G, 59A, 107 points) moves just six points shy of becoming the Badgers all-time leading scorer. She looks to surpass Kate Allgood and Kelly Walker who both finished their Brock careers with 112 points.
Emily Kelly made 33 saves in the loss as Brock was outshot 37-33 overall.
Queen's went for 2-for-5 on the powerplay and scored the eventual game-winner with the extra attacker. The Badgers were 2-for-3 on the powerplay.
The Badgers are back in action again next weekend when they host the Waterloo Warriors (Nov. 15) and Laurier Golden Hawks (Nov. 16). Both games are schedule for 2:15pm at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
The bad news was that the Blues scored three.
Alessandra Bianchi scored two goals and the Blues limited the Warriors to just 13 shots in a 3-2 Toronto victory on Sunday afternoon in Waterloo.
Maryn Caragata (Etobicoke) and Kaitlyn McDonell (Kincardine) scored for the Warriors, who dropped their seventh game in a row and fell to 1-5-3 overall. The Blues, who have allowed only 15 goals all season, improved to 5-2 with the victory.
For the second time in 24 hours, Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) was a tough-luck loser in the Waterloo net. She turned aside 20 shots, but she's still searching for her first victory of the season. The game won't do much for the save percentage of Toronto goalie Nicole Kesteris, who made 11 stops on 13 shots. But she did earn the most important statistic – her fifth win of the year.
Bianchi scored the lone goal of a defensive opening period, as each team registered only 4 shots apiece. Caragata equalized just over two minutes into the second period with her first career CIS goal, setting up an eventful final stanza.
Bianchi counted her second of the game at 13:51, and Sonja Weidenfelder looked to salt things away for the Blues just over two minutes later. However, with Bouwhuis on the bench for an extra attacker, McDonell drew the Warriors back to within one. The Warriors stayed on the 6-on-5 attack in the game's closing minutes, but they were unable to find the tying goal.
The Warriors will now head back on the road in a short week when they travel down highway 7 to take on the Guelph Gryphons on Thursday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
Ryerson 4 @ Laurier 3 (SO)
