Western 2 @ Toronto 1
The Mustangs women's hockey team extended their winning streak to eight consecutive game on Saturday afternoon after edging the Toronto Varsity Blues 2-1 on the road.
With the win, the Mustangs now hold an 8-0-1 record and maintain their place atop the OUA standings, while the loss for the Blues now moves the team to a 5-3-0 record on the season so far.
Both teams came out onto the ice in the opening period looking to take control of the play and although the purple and white outshot the Blues nine-to-four, it was the blue and white who got to the scoreboard first as the Blues' points leader, Kristi Riseley put the puck past Mustang goaltender, Kelly Campbell to give the Blues a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
With the advantage, the Blues returned to the ice determined to maintain their lead over the Mustangs. The blue and white fired off 11 shots on Campbell but to no avail as the veteran netminder stopped all shots on net.
Despite the Blue's offensive assault on the Mustangs, the purple and white were able to even out the scoreboard asKatelyn Gosling found the back of the Blue's net to send the match into the break 1-1.
The Mustangs dominated the third frame, as the team put on some strong offensive pressure in the Blues end of the ice. Although the purple and white outshot Toronto eight-to-three, the Blues' goaltender, Nicole Kesteris, guarded the goal line intensely for much of the action.
As the contest entered into the 18th minute, and both teams with one point on the scoreboard, the match looked like it was headed into overtime action. That was, until, the Mustangs' Kendra Broad racked up her ninth goal of the season with only a minute and 38 seconds left in the contest, to give the purple and white the one point advantage.
With less than two minutes left in the action the Blues were unable to make up the point and the Mustangs walked away with the 2-1 victory and their eight consecutive undefeated match.
Waterloo 3 @ Brock 0
The Waterloo Warriors (3-5-3 OUA) blanked the Brock Badgers women's hockey team (0-6-2 OUA) Saturday afternoon at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
Warriors goaltender Stephanie Sluys was the difference in this one making 22 stops for the shutout. Marissa Redmond, Angela MacDonald and Rebecca Rutherford with an empty-net powerplay goal found mesh for Waterloo.
Stephanie Loukes suffered the loss for the Badgers, but played another strong game between the pipes making 28 saves.
Brock finished the game 0-for-3 on the powerplay, while Waterloo was 1-for-5.
Windsor 1 @ Ryerson 3
For the first time in OUA history, the Ryerson Rams women's hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers. The Rams (5-4-0), who are riding on a four game win streak, edged the Lancers (6-2-1) 3-1 Saturday at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
The first period ended on a high note for the Rams, with an incredible one-woman show by Sarah McGilvray (Stouffville, Ont.), who dangled the puck past three defencemen to put it top shelf over Lancers goalie Marissa Kozovski.
"The first goal is a big deal, but my teammates just took over from there," said McGilvray, following the win. "As a team we're coming together more and more as a family."
Both netminders faced 36 shots in the game, but it was Rams goalie Alex Armstrong (Toronto) who came out on top, allowing only one goal from Erinn Noseworthy to tie it early in the third.
Despite the Lancers averaging three goals per game, they couldn't solve Armstrong's rebound control.
"Windsor's a really talented offensive team," said Rams head coach Lisa Haley. "I think the most exciting part for us was not the three goals we scored but the fact we held them to one."
Rams forward Melissa Wronzberg (Thronhill, Ont.) added two goals in the third to secure the win. Her first came midway through the period on a give-and-go pass from line mate Emma Rutherford (Kanata, Ont.). Wronzberg's second superseded a team effort to get the puck out of their zone and into the Lancers empty net.
The Rams will be back on home ice tomorrow to face the Western Mustangs at 2:30.
"We have to be careful that we just don't assume we're going to win," said Haley. "The biggest mistake we could make is to get complacent and just assume that the wins are going to come."
York 3 @ Nipissing 4 (SO)
They don't ask how, they ask how many.
And for the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey, how many is three in a row as the team completed an impressive comeback yesterday to defeat the York Lions in a shootout.
Down 3-0 early in the third period, the Lakers scored three times in the final 19 minutes of the game, including two goals in the final three minutes to tie things up before picking up the win.
After going down 3-0 just a minute into the final period, Brittany Crago found the back of the net to wake the Lakers up, which set up Kaley Tienhaara's heroics, as she scored her first two OUA goals in less than two minutes.
Her second, with just over a minute left, tied the game and sent the teams to overtime.
The extra period solved nothing, but in the shootout, the Lakers scored two out of three, while Jackie Rochefort shut down the Lions and gave the Lakers the extra point.
Both Crago and Tienhaara finished with two points, while Sam Strassburger, Laura McKenzie and Alexane Papineau picked up assists on the three regulation time goals.
Kayla Carter ended up scoring the winner in the shootout after Crago scored to start and Strassburger was denied on her chance.
Rochefort finished with 23 saves in the game, plus another two in the shootout.
Nipissing now sits with a 5-4-1 record and have won three straight games.
Laurier 0 @ Guelph 4
After a disappointing 1-0 loss to the Waterloo Warriors on Thursday, the Gryphon women's hockey team bounced back on Saturday night in a big way by shutting out the defending OUA champion Laurier Golden Hawks 4-0 at the Gryphon Centre. Gryphon goaltender Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, Ont.) recorded 43 saves in the shutout.
It was a dominating performance by the Gryphons, who outplayed the Golden Hawks from start to finish. Laurier goaltender Amanda Smith (Burlington, Ont.) was busy as the Gryphons fired 43 shots her way on the night. Guelph's first goal would come on their first power play of the game after Laurier player Montana Merante (Orangeville, Ont.) was called for hooking. With 34 seconds left in the man advantage Leigh Shilton (Belleville, Ont.) would fire one in from the slot to make it 1-0. The Gryphons would end the period with another goal from Averi Nooren (Aylmer, Ont.), as her team-leading fifth goal of the season made it 2-0 Guelph.
A nice re-direction by Alana Sims (Whitby, Ont.) in the second period pushed the Gryphons' lead to 3-0, and Christine Grant would end any hopes of a Laurier comeback in the third period when she made it 4-0 with just under six minutes remaining.
Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, Ont.) and Katie Mora (Guelph, Ont.) would both record a two-point night in the win.
UOIT 1 @ Queen's 6
The No.5 Queen's women's hockey team exploded offensively as they defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks 6-1 Saturday night at the Memorial Centre in Kingston.
The Gaels opened the scoring just over three minutes into the opening frame on a goal from Fiona Lester (Peterborough, Ont.).Addi Halladay (North Augusta, Ont.) was credited with the lone assist on Lester's third of the season. Queen's doubled their lead at the halfway point of the period as Lester deposited a one-timer for her second of the evening after receiving a cross-crease pass fromTaryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.). Clare McKellar (London, Ont.) added a goal of her own, burying a loose puck in front of the net to put the Gaels ahead 3-0 after twenty minutes.
Queen's put the game out of reach in the final period of play as McKellar deposited a great saucer pass from Jessica Wakefield (Lucan, Ont.) for her second of the game. Wakefield and Halladay each added a tally of their own as the Gaels went on to earn the 6-1 victory. Final shots for the game totalled 36 to 10 in favour of Queen's. Shawna Griffin(Redwood Meadows, Alta.), McKellar, Lester and Wakefield led all skaters with three points apiece.
Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) started in net for the Gaels, earning the nine save victory, while Tori Campbell and Cassie Charette of the Ridgebacks combined for 30 saves in the loss.

York 3 @ Laurentian 2
Lisa Stathopulos of Toronto led the Lions to victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs on overtime after coming from two goals behind on Sunday (Nov. 16). Stathopulos bagged her third goal in the third minute of the overtime to complete her hat-trick.
After a scoreless first period, the Voyageurs drew first blood through a power play in the 12th minute. Renee Leclair scored the goal with assists from Julie Hebert and Maggie Brennan.
The Voyageurs doubled their lead in the third period at 10:08 through Samantha Morell.
At 12:12, Stathopulos received a play from Jessa McAuliffe (Odessa, Ont.) and pulled one for the Lions.
With less than two minutes left on the game, Stathopulos emerged forward and scored her second goal for a dramatic equaliser that extended the match to overtime.
It was a team effort that brought about the winning goal. Rianna Langford (Collingwood, Ont.) and Amy Locke (Toronto) assisted Stathopulos in achieving her hat-trick and sealing the victory for the Lions. Stathopulos now has 10 goals to her name: the highest in the league.
Windsor 4 @ Toronto 3 (SO)
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team dropped a 4-3 shootout decision to the Windsor Lancers on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 16) at Varsity Arena.
With the loss, the Blues drop to 5-3-1, while the Lancers improve 7-2-1 so far this season.
Tied 3-3 after overtime, Windsor's Krystin Lawrence was the lone goal scorer in the shoot out to seal the win.
Toronto opened the scoring nine minutes into the game as Kristi Riseley (Pickering, Ont.) found Sonja Weidenfelder (Toronto) all alone at the side of the net for the one-time goal. Third-year forward and Toronto native Alessanda Bianchi extended the Blues lead five minutes later as she buried a Lauren Straatman (Thorndale, Ont.) rebound in front of the net.
U of T led 2-0 after the first period.
The Lancers got on the board 5:20 into the second frame as Lawrence, a rookie forward from Tecumseh, Ont., sent a shot through traffic to find the back of the net.
Lawrence had a partial breakaway four minutes later but Blues defenceman Caitlin Maikawa made a nice check to clear the puck out of harm's way.
Windsor did manage to even the score when third-year forward Jillian Rops buried a rebound off a Zoe Ellis point shot with 2:40 to go in the frame. The two teams remained deadlocked at 2-2 heading into the final frame.
Windsor's Jenny MacKnight gave the visiting team a 3-2 lead with a goal 1:22 into the third, but Riseley responded for the Blues, capitalizing on a Lancers turnover and sending a nifty backhand into the net.
Second-year Blues goaltender Katey Teekasingh made 29 saves in her first start of the season.\
Laurier 8 @ Brock 4
The Brock University women's hockey team (0-7-2 OUA) dropped an 8-4 decision to the No. 7 ranked Laurier Golden Hawks (6-3-1 OUA) Sunday afternoon at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
The Badgers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the opening 1:16 with goals from Christina Ieradi and Erin McColm. Laurier's Megan Howe beat Brock starter Stephanie Loukes, cutting the lead to one after 20 minutes.
Ieradi put Brock up 3-1 early in the second period, before the Golden Hawks answered with three straight from Katia Piccoli, Laura Brooker and Jessie Hurrell to take a 4-3 lead. Brock's Brittney Cabral tied it up late in second period, sending it to the final 20 minutes deadlocked 4-4.
In the third, it was all Laurier, as they scored four straight times with single markers from Montana Merante, Tammy Freiburger, Heather Platt and Hurrell, on route to the 8-4 road victory.
Brock captain Jessica Fickel added two more assists on the season putting her just four points way from becoming the all-time Brock scoring leader (48G, 61A, 109 points). She looks to surpass Kate Allgood and Kelly Walker who both finished their Brock careers with 112 points.
In goal, Laurier starter Amanda Smith registered 21 saves for the victory. Loukes recorded 24 saves in the loss.
Western 2 @ Ryerson 0
The Ryerson Rams women's hockey team fell 2-0 on Sunday to the OUA first place Western Mustangs at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. This loss marks the end of the women's four game win streak.
The Rams (5-5-0) came out slow in the first and second periods. Juxtaposing yesterday's play against Windsor, the Rams were apathetic, allowing the Mustangs (9-0-1) to maintain puck possession, stay in their offensive zone and ultimately outshoot Ryerson 22-12 through forty minutes.
"We're all disappointed with our start," said Rams head coach Lisa Haley. "For us that was a 20 minute effort, and it's certainly going to take all 60 to beat a first place team."
A shot from the point halfway through the first by Mustangs Katelyn Gosling led to the frame's only goal. In the second it was an unlucky bounce that generated a 2-on-1, allowing Stacey Scott, who was credited with an assist on Gosling's goal, to bank another past Rams goalie Ally Sarna (Whitby, Ont.).
Following the loss, Haley admitted that it wasn't until the third period that the Rams showed their true colours.
"We finally figured out that our backs were to the wall and it was going to take more than what we gave already," she said. "There was a new urgency to battle, engage and try to win some loose pucks."
Despite a 16-5 shot count in favour of Ryerson in the final frame, they couldn't get the puck past Mustangs goalie Kelly Campbell, who ranked first in the CIS last season for total saves (461) and save percentage (0.935).
