KINGSTON, Ont. - With 1,562 people in attendance at the Gaels School Day Game, No.3 Queen's defeated York 5-0 at the Rogers K-Rock Centre to begin the Gaels Homecoming Weekend.
In partnership with the Kingston Frontenacs, the Rogers K-Rock Centre, and Queen's Women's Hockey Alumni, the game celebrated UN Day of the Girl, profiling women's sport and the role education plays in the rights of girls.
Queen's stepped onto the ice to cheers from the school kids, and didn't disappoint the excited crowd. Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) improved on her OUA leading goal total, burying her fifth of the season on the powerplay to put the Gaels ahead in the first period. Addi Halladay (North Augusta, Ont.) doubled the Queen's lead before the first intermission, potting a powerplay marker of her own on a cannon from the point for her first CIS goal.
The Gaels continued to take advantage York's penalties, as Mary Coughlin (Amherstburg, Ont.) netted a third powerplay goal for Queen's in the second period.
With the loud crowd at the backs, the Gaels cruised to a 5-0 victory on third period goals from Nadia Larocca (Mississauga, Ont.) and Clare McKellar (London, Ont.), who scored a fourth powerplay goal for Queen's.
Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) picked up her second win of the season and the first shutout her career for the Gaels with 23 saves. York's Megan Lee made 29 stops in the loss.
Pilon continues to lead the OUA with five goals, four powerplay goals, and three game-winners through three games this season. With a goal and an assist in the game, Pilon also takes sole possession of first place in OUA points with eight.
Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, Alta) grabbed two points on a pair of assists, while Coughlin also picked up an assist for her second point of the day.
The Gaels (3-0-0) are back in action next Saturday, October 25, when they host the Toronto Varsity Blues at 3:30pm at the Memorial Centre.
ICE CHIPS: Largest attendance at a Queen's women's hockey game in program history... Kyla Crouse (Mount Brydges, Ont.) played for Queen's against York, while her brother will suit up for the Frontenacs Friday night against Plymouth... Queen's moves to 3-0-0 on the season while York is now 1-2-0.
Brock 1 @ Ryerson 3
TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams women's hockey team (1-2) picked up its first win of the OUA regular season with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Brock Badgers (0-2) on Friday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Ryerson controlled the majority of play in the first two periods and led 2-0 after 40 minutes. The Badgers made a strong push in the final frame but Rams goaltenderAlex Armstrong (Toronto) made several key stops in the third period to seal the victory.
"A 2-0 lead is pretty hard to protect and we expected Brock to make a push and they certainly did that," said Ryerson head coach Lisa Haley. For us I think it was important for all of our players to understand what their role was going to be down the stretch and I thought we did a pretty decent job of that. It was a good situation for us to be in. They put on a push; we bent but didn't break."
Both teams generated quality scoring chances early in the contest. Brock's Laura Neu (Ayr, Ont.) would fire a shot off the post three minutes in which resulted in a goal-mouth scramble and more Brock opportunities. Two minutes later, Ryerson'sMichelle Evagelou (Scarborough, Ont.) was denied by Brock goalie Stephanie Loukes (Oakville, Ont.) on a breakaway and then Loukes robbed Alyssa Connolly(Mount Albert, Ont.) with a spectacular glove save.
Second-year Rams forward Blair Malthaner (Toronto) would finally solve Loukes, scoring her first of the season on a wrap-around goal seven minutes into the first.
The Rams would go up 2-0 when first-year forward Kayla Karbonik (St. Andrews, Man.) scored her first career OUA goal while shorthanded with just under three minutes to play in the second period.
The Badgers responded in the final frame and were outshooting Ryerson 9-4 by the midway point of the period. Armstrong made big stops on a wrap-around attempt and then a deflection with 16:32 remaining in the third. Three minutes later she faced another barrage of shots, many after she lost her stick, but was able to keep her team up 2-0.
The Badgers would finally get one past Armstrong when Jessica Fickel (Fort Erie, Ont.) found the five-hole for her first of the season with just over five minutes to play.
Sarah McGilvray's first career OUA goal with 24 seconds remaining in regulation into an empty net would seal the win for Ryerson.
Armstrong stopped 29 of 30 shots faced for the victory, while Loukes saved 27 of 29 shots in the loss.
Ryerson was 0-for3 on the powerplay and Brock was 0-for4 with the man advantage.

Guelph 2 @ Toronto 3
TORONTO - Fourth-year forward Jacqueline Scheffel scored the only goal in the shootout as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Guelph Gryphons 3-2 on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18) at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues improve to 2-0-0 early in the regular season.
Fifth-year netminder Nicole Kesteris posted 25 saves in regulation and stopped all four players she faced in the shootout, including a beautiful save on Guelph's Kaitlin Lowy.
Second-year forward Katherine Gale opened the scoring 8:16 into the first period when she tipped in a Julia Szulewska shot at the side of the net. Toronto led 1-0 after 20 minutes of action.
The Gryphons finally got on the board with 4:12 remaining in the second period when Averi Nooren rifled a shot into the top corner of the net on a 2-on-0 opportunity.
The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the third period.
Third-year forward Taylor Day notched a powerplay marker late in the third frame, but the Gryphons Marcis Landman evened the score with 26 seconds remaining in regulation. Overtime solved nothing and the game headed into a shootout.
Windsor 1 @ Western 2
LONDON, Ont., - The Mustangs women's hockey team faced off against the Windsor Lancers this afternoon on home ice at Thompson Arena. Despite a match that saw the Mustangs trailing behind, Kendra Broad was the Mustangs saving grace today as she netted the only two purple and white goals of the game – one to tie the game up and one to take home the 2-1 win.
"Windsor this year, in my opinion, has the most talent of any team in the OUA," stated Mustangs head coach Chris Higgins. "I think they are the team to beat so we're pretty happy with this one."
With the win the Mustangs now advance to a 2-0-1 record in the OUA standings, while the Lancers sit at a record of 2-0-1 on the season so far.
The Mustangs came out onto the ice in the first period eager to make some opportunities for themselves. The home team put nine shots on Windsor's goaltender Marissa Kosovski to outshoot the Lancers total of five shots on the period. Despite the shot count however, it was the Lancers who put themselves onto the scoreboard first when Candace Kourounis put the puck past Mustangs netminder Kelly Campbell to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Mustangs worked hard in the second frame of action to cut the Lancers advantage. The hard work would pay off as Broad found the back of Kovoski's net just five and a half minutes into the play to even out the score.
With an even scoreboard, both teams increased their intensity trying to be the first to the puck and put shots on net. The Lancers were able to control the puck in Western's end of the ice for a large part of the remaining period but were unable to put the puck past Campbell. The score remained tied as the clock ran out, sending the match into overtime.
The Lancers continued to battle hard in the five minute overtime period and they held a strong offensive attack that pressured the Mustangs in their end of the ice. Both the Lancers and the Mustangs had chances to take home the win but neither team could capitalize on their opportunities sending the match into shootouts.
This afternoon's game marks the second consecutive game that the Mustangs' fate has been left up to the shootout rounds, after falling to the Golden Hawks last Sunday. Campbell stopped all three of the shots that came her way. Kosovski was able to stop the Mustangs first attempt taken by Stacey Scott but it would be Broad, lined up as Western's second shooter, who brought the puck in and over Kovoski's goal line to rack up her second goal of the game and claim the win for the Mustangs.

UOIT 0 @ York 2
TORONTO - The York University Lions women's hockey team bested the UOIT Ridgebacks by a score of 2-0 on Sunday (Oct. 19) at Canlan Ice Sports in its home opener.
The Lions dominated the first period in the attacking half as the team pressured the Ridgebacks' defence, and it didn't take long for them to get on the scoreboard. Sarai Whitty (Kingston, Ont.) shot straight at the goaltender, who could not get a good grip on the puck as Lions' rookie forward Chelsea Tucker (Alliston, Ont.) scrambled to poke it in to give the Lions an early lead just 2:29 in. It was Tucker's first career goal for the Lions. Whitty and defender Kristen Barbara(Mount Hope, Ont.) were credited with the assists.
Seven minutes later, the Ridgebacks almost found a goal going one-on-one with the goalie. However, goaltender Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) won the duel and held on to the puck to stop the play.
Caitlin Lee (Madoc, Ont.) prevented a dangerous run by the opposition's Chelsea Ball by intercepting a deflected pass and clearing it off before the forward could shoot.
With less than one minute to go, Rianna Langford (Collingwood, Ont.) made an attempt in front of the goal. Langford was closely marked by a defender, resulting in a weak shot at the goalie.
The Lions carried their 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
At the start of the second period, the trailing Ridgebacks responded with an early attacking play. The first five minutes of the second frame was mostly played in the Lions' defensive half, but Lee stood her ground and saved all the incoming shots.
Ten minutes in, the Lions executed a counter attack led by Whitty and Jessa McAuliffe (Odessa, Ont.) that ended with a save by the goalie.
The Lions extended their lead on another counter attack with 5:01 left in the second. Veteran forward Lisa Stathopulos of Toronto had a breakaway and released a sniper of a shot through the legs of the goalie to score her third goal of the season. Lee and Amy Locke (Toronto) assisted the goal.
The Lions were more organized in the final period. Despite having the lead, the team kept on the offensive. With less than five minutes played, Lindsay Brook (Ste. Rose, Man.) fired a powerful slapshot from the left, forcing the goalie to deflect it. The puck fell to Barbara, who let it go from a distance towards the top of the net. Ridgebacks goalie Cassie Charette made a spectacular save, catching the puck in midair.
UOIT pulled its goalie early but the Lions kept their defence locked tight to preserve the shutout.
Lee was impressive in front of the goal, saving 28 for her first shutout of the season, while Charette was credited with 24 saves.
