McMaster 74 Waterloo 48
Another day, another emphatic victory for the Marauders women's basketball team, who won their third straight game of 2018 with a 74-48 dismissal of the Waterloo Warriors Wednesday.
With the win, McMaster improved to 9-4 on the season, keeping them level in second in the OUA West standings.
Pacing the Marauders in the victory, forward Olivia Wilson had 16 points on 6-11 shooting, while Lexie Spadafora responded to her Athlete of the Week turn of last weekend by contributing a double-double of 15 points and 10 boards.
Linnaea Harper owned the glass on the night, with 17 rebounds (eight offensive, nine defensive) to handily lead the game.
The Marauders held the Warriors to just 18-61 from the floor (29.5 per cent), while shooting 35 per cent themselves.
A 10-0 run lent the Marauders the breathing room they needed late in the first quarter, as Harper's free throw gave Mac a 21-12 lead with 1:42 to play in the period.
The visitors did not look back from there, outscoring the Warriors in each of the next three quarters to extend their advantage and but the game beyond reach.

Laurier 63 Guelph 64
GUELPH, Ont. – For the third time in the span of six days, the Gryphons women's basketball team found themselves in a ball game that came down to the wire. Unlike their recent weekend road trip to Thunder Bay where the Gryphons dropped back-to-back tight games to Lakehead, this time around it was the Gryphons who were executing down the stretch and adding to the win column.
Wednesday evening at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, the Gryphons picked up an important 64-63 win over the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks. With the game tied at 63-63 late in the fourth quarter, Gryphons fourth year guard Megan Brenkel earned a trip to the free throw line with just :07 seconds remaining in regulation and connected on the first of her two free throws to put the Gryphons in the lead. After a desperation buzzer-beating three-point attempt from Laurier guard Nicole Morrison fell short, the Gryphons had officially earned a hard-fought 64-63 victory to draw even with the Golden Hawks in the OUA West standings. With the result, both teams now sit at 6-7 on the season, tied for 5th in the nine-team OUA West division standings.
"We talked specifically this week about finishing at the end of games," said Gryphons head coach Mark Walton. "At one point in the fourth quarter, we were down seven points. But they fought back and made some plays when we had to. We defended well and won a lot of the 'effort plays' tonight, which was the difference in the end."
Just as the two teams' records would indicate, little separated the two sides throughout the game on Wednesday night. Gryphons rookie guard Burke Bechard had a big night, leading the team in both scoring (16 points) and rebounding (14 rebounds). But in the late stages, it was the Gryphons' veterans stepping up. Fourth year guard Haley Belyk (Regina, SK) connected on a clutch three-pointer with 4:05 remaining in the final quarter to put the Gryphons up by four.
Aside from sinking the game-winning free throw in the final stages, senior guard Megan Brenkel came up with several other game-changing plays, including a great hustle play with 2:47 remaining where she saved a ball from going out of bounds and found fellow senior Quincy Sickles-Jarvis for a lay in to put the Gryphons up 62-58.
One of the keys for the Gryphons on the night was finding a way to contain Laurier senior guard Nicole Morrison who entered the night as the OUA's second-leading scorer with 20.3 points per game. Morrison, who was held to 7-19 shooting on the night, would tie the game up at 63-63 with :24 seconds remaining after forcing a turnover and getting to the rim for a pair of free throws. Morrison finished the night with 24 points, but was unable to shake Haley Belyk in the final seconds and had to settle for a contested buzzer-beating attempt from just inside mid-court. Belyk, who picked up a pair of steals on the night, was part of a trio of Gryphons who got a shot at defending one of the conference's elite scorers, with rookies Burke Bechard and Skyla Minaker also making big contributions on the defensive end.
While Laurier's offence ran through their talented senior guard, the Gryphons received a balanced scoring attack with four different players scoring in double figures. Brenkel and Sickles-Jarvis both came off the bench and made big impacts with Brenkel finishing with 14 points and 8 rebounds with Sickles-Jarvis chipping in with 12 points and 7 boards.
Third year guard Ivana Vujadinovic followed up her 17-point effort at Lakehead on Saturday with another strong performance on Wednesday, finishing with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists versus Laurier.
The Gryphons will now get set to host the No. 9-ranked team in the country on Saturday night when the Windsor Lancers visit the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. Windsor currently sits atop the OUA West standings with a 9-3 record and will be on the second night of back-to-back games on Saturday after they visit the Waterloo Warriors on Friday evening.

Ryerson 78 Laurentian 52
SUDBURY, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams snapped their two-game losing skid on Friday night in an emphatic way as they came away with a 78-52 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs in Sudbury.
Right from the beginning of the match it was apparent that this contest would belong firmly to the Rams. Both offensively and defensively, the Rams proved to outmatch the Voyageurs in every capacity, outscoring them in three out of four quarters, while holding them to one of their lowest point totals of the season.
The first half saw the Rams take full advantage of their overwhelming size and strength, as they muscled their way to several baskets in the paint. Leading the way for the Rams in scoring throughout the first half with sixteen points, Sofia Paska (Etobicoke, Ont.) proved to be the cornerstone for Ryerson’s offensive strategy, with the majority of passing lanes being directed towards her in the paint. Additionally, the Rams were greatly assisted by forward Bronwyn Williams (Toronto, Ont.) who acquired six points, to go along with six rebounds and one block in the first half, proving herself invaluable on both ends of the court.
Leading 40-21 heading into the second half, the Rams offensive breadth seemed to only improve as their bench made considerable contributions in the final two quarters. The Rams bench provided 19 total points in the second half, tying the total amount provided by the Rams starters. Additionally, the Rams field goal percentage had improved in the second half, as they connected on half of all of their field goal attempts throughout the final two quarters.
The Rams were lead in scoring on the evening by Sofia Paska and freshman guard Marin Scotten (Ottawa, Ont.) who put up 24 and 11 points, respectively.
In contrast to these impressive figures exhibited by the Rams, the Voyageurs struggled on both ends of the court throughout the entire match. With a a total field-goal percentage below thirty-percent, the Voyageurs struggled to connect offensively throughout the contest relying predominately on three-point shots to cut into the Rams ever-increasing lead.

Lakehead 73 Western 54
The Lakehead women’s basketball team (9-4) had a big win over Western (7-6) tonight, 73-54, in London, ON.
The Thunderwolves came out in the first quarter, pushing the pace and hitting shots, establishing a solid 24-12 lead after the first quarter.
The Wolves went on a 12-0 run in the second quarter that gave Lakehead a 41-25 lead at half. Lakehead maintained their lead for the remainder of the second half, coming out with a big 73-54 victory.
Coach Jon Kreiner:
“This was one of our most complete games of the season. We are looking to improve defensively and shoot the ball better and we accomplished that. We really struggled to rebound the ball tonight (45-27 in favour of Western) and that is another area we are looking to improve. I am very proud of Jerika tonight. We needed her to score when Leashja gets doubled and she stepped up like a true 5th year senior point guard should.”
Jerika Baldin was on fire with 21 points, 5 assists and 2 steals, hitting 4-6 from the three. Lily Gruber Schulz had 10 points going 4-4 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line with 6 rebounds. Leashja Grant had 13 points, 11 rebounds to keep her double-double streak alive.
The Thunderwolves take on Western once again tomorrow at 6pm.

Carleton 49 Queen’s 39
KINGSTON, ON – The Ravens battled turnovers and a drought from three-point range on Friday night against the Queen’s Golden Gaels, but were able to overcome their misfortunes thanks to a strong defensive performance that saw them defeat Queen’s 49-39.
Fourth-year forward Elizabeth Leblanc (London, ON) helped lead the Ravens out of several offensive slumps with a steady performance that saw her score 16 points on an efficient 7-for-11 from the field, while also grabbing five rebounds and blocking two shots.
GAME FLOW:
It took two minutes for the game’s first basket to finally drop courtesy of a short jump shot by fifth-year forward Heather Lindsay (Ottawa, ON), but her basket soon sparked Carleton’s offence early in the first quarter. The Ravens bolted out to a 12-0 lead that was capped off by a Lindsay hook shot. The Golden Gaels were held scoreless by Carleton’s defence until the 1:16 mark of the opening frame when Abby Dixon went 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Leblanc hit a baseline jumper with 18 seconds left in the first to culminate a strong 16-4 start for the Ravens.
Queen’s began to find their rhythm in the second quarter by sending waves of double teams to guard Lindsay, while also doing a better job of swinging the ball inside the perimeter to find open teammates. The Golden Gaels outscored the Ravens 13-8 in the second quarter as Emma Ritcey found her stroke. Ritcey scored her first eight points of the game all in the second quarter, including two threes, while also dishing out two assists and a steal. Ritcey’s efforts helped Queen’s enter halftime trailing by just seven at 24-17.
The Golden Gaels continued to wage a comeback attempt in the third quarter, but the Ravens were ready. After Veronika Lavergne scored the opening tally of the second half, Leblanc took matters into her own hands and scored the Ravens’ first six points of the quarter. Lavergne matched Leblanc almost shot for shot as the two traded jumpers and scored six points each in the first three and a half minutes of the third. Catherine Traer’s (Chelsea, QC) length helped her disrupt the Golden Gaels’ passing lanes and allowed her to put the Ravens ahead by as many as 13 points. A steal and quick pass by Traer to freshman guard Madison Reid (Carleton Place, ON) for a fast break three-pointer gave the Ravens a 38-25 lead. But the double-digit margin was short-lived as Queen’s battled back to enter the final quarter down 38-31.
With the game looking like it was on the verge of becoming a stalemate, Carleton’s starters dug down in the fourth quarter to thwart the Golden Gaels’ final response. Tense moments began in the frame as no team scored until Leblanc hit a turnaround jump shot at the 8:15 mark. Andrea Priamo answered with a fadeaway jumper of her own 16 seconds later. Both teams traded points until Leblanc hit a smooth pull-up with 2:30 left in the game to give Carleton a 10-point lead. A basket by Lavergne reduced the lead to 46-38 with 1:46 to go, but it would be as close as Queen’s would get before the Ravens closed out the game 49-39.

Ottawa 57 York 53
A slow opening quarter was too difficult to overcome for the York University Lions women's basketball team in a 57-53 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in their Friday night contest at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
The visitors raced out to an 18-5 lead after the first 10 minutes of play and stretched that advantage at the half, doubling up on the Lions with a 42-21 score.
The second half was a different story, however. The Gee-Gees scored the first points of the third quarter, but after that it was all York. They put up 18 points in the frame to cut the deficit to 10 heading into the final quarter, and continued to pour in the baskets in the fourth.
With five minutes remaining, a basket by Cyanna King made the score 52-50 and after a miss by Ottawa at the other end, the Lions had the chance to take the lead. However, they turned the ball over and the Gee-Gees scored on the ensuing possession, ultimately holding on for the four-point win.
Fifth-year forward Lindsay Shotbolt continued her remarkable season and recorded more than 20 rebounds for the second straight game. Following last week's 25-board performance, she brought down 21 against Ottawa to go along with a game-high 17 points, recording her third straight double-double and seventh overall this season.
Chante Clarke added 14 points coming in off the bench, while Katrina Collins-Samuels chipped in with eight points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Ottawa's leading scorer was Maia Timmons with 12 points thanks to shooting 4-of-9 from the behind the arc. She was the only Gee-Gees player to reach double digits.
The Lions fell to 6-7 with the loss, while Ottawa improved to 8-5 and created some separation between the two teams with the win.

Windsor 58 Waterloo 37
In an unusually low scoring game, Windsor and Waterloo struggled to find the net throughout the match. In the second quarter alone, the two teams combined for just 15 points. Windsor led 21-17 at halftime.
The third quarter was all Emily Prevost, as she scored all but two of the Lancers field goals in the frame. Prevost led all scorers finishing the game with 15 points, nine of which came in the third. She also had a game high 12 rebounds.
Tyra Blizzard also hit double digits with ten points, while Olivia Osamusali also finished the game with a dozen rebounds.

Laurier 59 McMaster 81
The McMaster Marauders women's basketball team continued to fly high, as they stretched their winning streak to four games with a 81-59 victory over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks Saturday.
Linnaea Harper would lead the Marauders, finishing the game with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Harper would drain all four of her shot attempts from three-point range while teammates Hilary Hanaka (15), Olivia Wilson (15), and Sarah Gates (12) were the other Marauders with double-digit games.
McMaster head coach Teresa Burns let her squad continue their success by committee, as four Marauders finished the game with double-digit points totals.
Nicole Morrison continued her scoring ways for Laurier. Ranking second in the OUA for points per game (20.3), Morrison finished the game scoring 19 points, completing 7-of-17 from the field while her teammate Irena Rynkiewicz was the only other Golden Hawk who tallied double digits with 14 points.
With the victory, the Marauders improved to 10-4 on the season and slid into second place in the OUA's West Division.
As for Laurier, the loss marks their fourth straight as they'll look forward to a back-to-back matchup against the Algoma Thunderbirds next weekend.
Laurier hasn't been able to enjoy the new year as much as the Marauders, having failed to find the win column in 2018, a run including a heartbreaker against the Guelph Gryphons that saw them lose by a single point, 64-63 on Wednesday.
In the opening quarter, the Marauders got their shots dropping early, taking an early 18-9 lead by the end of the opening ten minutes.
McMaster wouldn't ease up on the pressure, as they forced the Golden Hawks to commit eight-second backcourt violations on three occasions in the opening half of play.
Marauder Olivia Wilson worked the paint in the opening half of the game, scoring 13 points. She finished the game totalling 15 points and six rebounds.
Perhaps the only downside of the Marauders performance in the opening twenty minutes of play could be found in the Golden Hawks ability to force seven turnovers. McMaster finished the half having only forced a single turnover.
Mac turned that around in the second half, as they racked up six turnovers while continuing their dominant rebounding performance. The Marauders finished the game having totalled 52 rebounds.

Carleton 68 York 62
TORONTO, ON – No lead was safe on Saturday night in Toronto as the Carleton Ravens were tested early and often by the York University Lions in what ultimately resulted in a tightly contested 68-62 victory for the undefeated Ravens.
Fourth-year forward Elizabeth Leblanc (London, ON) helped the Ravens claw out a victory thanks to 13 timely points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field. Leblanc also snagged two rebounds, distributed three assists and had two blocks to bolster Carleton on both ends of the floor.
GAME FLOW:
The York University Lions entered Saturday with a 6-7 record on the season after falling to the University of Ottawa 57-53 the night prior. The Lions got off to a strong start by giving the Ravens’ offence little room to breathe. A steal by Haley Bowie led to two free throws for former Raven Lindsay Shotbolt. Shotbolt split the pair to bring the score to 8-8 halfway through the first quarter. After failing to get a three-pointer to fall on Friday night against Queen’s, Carleton’s first three dropped at the 4:50 mark of the frame courtesy of a long-range shot from guard Stephanie Carr (Stittsville, ON). Carr’s three cued a 12-4 run that ended when Megan Macleod sunk two free throws. Macleod’s aggressive play set the tone for a Lions rally, to which Macleod was instrumental, adding another couple of free throws and a three-pointer by the end of the quarter to help keep the score close at 21-19.
Fifth-year guard Catherine Traer (Chelsea, QC) took over the reigns of Carleton’s offence early in the second. Traer converted on a smooth pull-up jumper to open the frame and converted on two consecutive threes to put the Ravens ahead 29-21 three minutes into the quarter. The long-distance barrage continued as guard Alexandra Trivieri (St. Catharines, ON) sunk a three of her own a minute later to push the lead past double-digits for the first time in the game. But the Lions showed their resilience once again and trimmed the margin to just seven with four minutes left to go in the half. A spot-up three by Leblanc with 58 seconds left in the half restored an 11-point lead and put Carleton ahead 41-30 entering the break.
Leblanc picked up where she left off in the second half, scoring the Ravens’ first six points off a trio of jumpers. But as Leblanc found her stroke, York staged a comeback effort of its own. Two free throws by Shotbolt cut the lead to 47-40 with 2:45 left in the third quarter. With the Lions showing signs of a rally, the Ravens answered with 8-4 run to end the quarter thanks to a late three by Alyssa Cerino (Stoney Creek, ON).
The Ravens entered the fourth nursing a 55-44 lead. Back-to-back jumpers by Lauren Golding and Macleod reduced the Ravens’ lead to seven once more. Carleton regrouped and boosted the margin to 63-52 following a baseline jumper by third-year guard Cynthia Dupont (Coaticook, QC), but a final push by York settled the score at 68-62 after Chante Clark hit a jump shot just inside the three-point line moments before the final buzzer sounded.

Ryerson 80 Nipissing 57
NORTH BAY, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams picked up their second win in a row on Saturday night as they bested the Nipissing Lakers 80-57 in North Bay.
However, this was very much a game in which the final score was not indicative of either team’s true performance, as indicated by Nipissing’s explosive first half performance.
Throughout the entirety of the first two quarters, the Lakers proved to be relentless in their pursuit of the upset victory. Greatly assisted by an otherworldly performance by junior guard Maeve Therriault (Ottawa, Ont.), who recorded 19 points in the first half while going 5 of 6 from beyond the arc, the Lakers were able to keep on the Rams heels consistently throughout the first and second quarters. Shooting nearly sixty-percent from three, and forty-percent from the field, the Lakers seemed to be playing above the caliber of what their 2-10 record would suggest.
However, this change in expected playing style did not phase the visiting Rams squad as they maintained their composure throughout the first half. Led in scoring by freshman guard Marin Scotten (Ottawa, Ont.), the offensive contributions of the Rams starters proved to be more diverse in Saturday night’s contest, as four members of the starting lineup concluded the first half having already tallied ten points or more. Paired with the Rams notoriously aggressive defensive-style, the Lakers offensive surge was able to be kept at bay as the Rams led by nine points at the half.
Heading into the final two quarters of play, the hosting Lakers seemed to cool off just as the Rams were heating up. Marin Scotten (Ottawa, Ont.) continued to lead the Rams offensively, as she finished the game with a career-high 26 points, to go along with two rebounds and one steal. Utilizing her size and skill to her advantage on the evening, Rams forward Sofia Paska (Etobicoke, Ont.) had a similarly stellar performance on the night, recording a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Toronto 76 Laurentian 82
Though points were exchanged through the first half, the Voyageurs had a strong third quarter showing where they outscored the visiting Varsity Blues 36-22. This surge of energy ultimately led to Laurentian capturing their first win of 2018 with a final score of 82-76.
A major key to the team's success seemed to be their continuing improvement on shooting percentage, again with an emphasis on long range shots. The Voyageurs shot 46.7% from the field, and 45.5% from behind the arc - a drastic improvement over their opponents 21.4% three-point success rate.
With shooting percentage being at an all-time high for Laurentian, four of their five starters scored in the double digits. Leading the pack was a pair of seniors in L'Ashante Henry and Adriane Bruni, who had 19 and 18 points respectively. Henry recorded a double-double on the night, grabbing 10 rebounds. Other notable performances came from the shooting duo of Andrea Zulich and Emily Tinnes, who together shot 53.3% on their 15 takes from behind the arc and had 17 and 15 points.
Leading scorer for the Varsity Blues was Sarah Bennett who had a game high 25 points.

Algoma held an early 5-1 lead, before Brock went on a 25–8 run to take a 26-13 lead early in the second quarter. The Badgers held a 41-29 lead at the half, and put together a 13-2 run early in the third quarter on route to the road victory.
The Badgers had three players in double figures, led by Baelie Campbell who finished with a game-high 24 points going 9-for-18 from the field. Rookie Miranda Smith finished with a career high 14 points including 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. Courtney Mcpherson collected the double double adding 10 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.
For the Thunderbirds Kendra Cole and Sydney Resch both added 10 points each in the loss.
For the game, Brock shocked 41.8% (23–55) from the field, 35.7% (5-14) from three-point land and 63.6% (14-22) from the charity stripe. Algoma went 21–65 (32.3%) from the floor, 4-20 (16.0%) from beyond the arc and 9-14 (64.3%) from the free throw line.

Ottawa 61 Queen’s 53
The Gee-Gees women’s basketball team held on for an exhilarating 61-53 win over the U SPORTS seventh-ranked Queen’s Gaels in Kingston on Saturday night.
After a slow first quarter, which saw the Gaels take an early 10-8 lead, the Gee-Gees’ offence exploded in the second quarter. Thanks to balanced scoring and menacing defensive pressure, the Gee-Gees outscored the Gaels 27-10 in the second frame, including a 16-0 run.
The offensive outburst gave the Gee-Gees a 35-21 lead into the halftime break. Second-year guard Amélie Hachey lead the team in scoring through the first half, tallying 12 points, all of which coming in the second quarter.
Without the services of team leading scorer Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu, who was unable to play after suffering an injury in Friday’s win at York, the team had to change their plan. In place of the Gee-Gees’ star rookie, second-year forward Adonaelle Mousamboté had a huge performance off the bench finishing the game with 8 points, on 4-8 shooting, along with a game-high 9 rebounds.
Hachey finished the game leading her team with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, and 1 block. In addition to the performances of Hachey and Mousamboté, third-year point guard Brooklynn McAlear finished the game with 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Jennifer Crowe also contributed a big 8 points and 5 rebounds of her own.
The win marks the sixth in a row for the Gee-Gees, four of which coming on the road. During the streak, the team has won over three wins U SPORTS nationally-ranked teams, and is climbing up the OUA East standings.
Next weekend, the Gee-Gees return to Ottawa and prepare for matchups with the Nipissing Lakers and Laurentian Voyageurs on Jan. 19 and 20. Both games tip-off at 6 p.m. and will be streaming live on OUA.tv.

Windsor 72 Guelph 64
The Lancers produced some large stretches throughout the game that challenged the fifth place Gryphons throughout the game.
The Lancers went on an 11-0 run to take a 21-12 lead before Guelph snapped the Gryphons' offensive drought with a jumper from the elbow. But Windsor started the second quarter off with another 5-0 run to take a 26-14 lead.
Leading by only four points late in the third quarter, 51-47, the Lancers went on a 9-2 run to take a ten point lead heading into the final frame. They would extend that lead in the fourth, going up by as many as 19 points as the Gryphons had a hard time finding any consistent offence.
Osamusali was a problem for the Gryphons, scoring 13 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Once again Prevost led all athletes with game-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Lakehead 74 Western 45
The Lakehead women’s basketball team (10-4) completed the weekend sweep against the Western Mustangs (7-7) tonight with a 74-45 victory in London, ON.
Lakehead continued their momentum after last night’s win (73-54) and held the Mustangs to a single basket in the first quarter while putting up 16 themselves. Lakehead dropped 20 more points in the second quarter that gave them a huge 36-12 lead at halftime.
The Thunderwolves continued their strong play for the remainder of the game and although Western picked up their offense in the second half, they were unable to recover and the Thunderwolves took the game 74-45 making it their fourth straight win.
“Complete team effort from start to finish. Leashja and Bridget provided the offense and our defense continues to improve,” said Coach Kreiner after the game.
