McMaster's Boiago named finalist for Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year Award
HAMILTON, Ont. - McMaster women's basketball alumna Danielle Boiago, who established several historical precedents as a Marauder, has been named as a finalist for the 2017 Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year Award.
The Hamilton, Ont. native was one of three finalists announced on January 22, alongside wrestler Michelle Fazzari and racquetball player Mike Green.
Boiago earned the honour after a season in which she became the first Marauder to win the Nan Copp Award as the U SPORTS women's basketball player of the year in March 2017.
The five-year McMaster point guard had earlier been named as both the OUA Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, the first Marauder -- and only the fourth player in conference history -- to accomplish that double.
Her 25.5 points per 40 minutes was the highest scoring rate in the OUA in 2016-17, and helped Boiago achieve a final career total of 1,719 points that easily topped McMaster's all-time list. The guard also finished first all-time in steals (250), second in assists (297) and third in rebounds (603).
She was awarded McMaster's Therese Quigley Award as the Marauders female athlete of the year.
Graduating from McMaster's Kinesiology program, Boiago moved into the professional ranks and spent the remainder of 2017 with the FSG Royal Eagles in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.
The recipient of the Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year Award will be announced at the 33rd Annual Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) Children's Fundraiser Dinner on Thursday, February 22 at the Hamilton Convention Centre.
