Western 78 @ Guelph 69
Guelph, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphon's women's basketball team were defeated by the visiting Western Mustangs 78-69 on Wednesday night at the W.F. Mitchell Centre.
Guelph's Katherine MacTavish led all Gryphon's with 26 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double. Marlee Freeman also chipped in with 14 points and three rebounds.
Western's Jenny Vaughan led all scorers with 36 points and six rebounds while Katelyn Leddy had 12 points and nine rebounds.
The first quarter opened with the Mustangs dominating play as they jumped to a quick 11-2 lead. Timely shooting and strong defensive play helped Western increase their lead to 17-4 with less than five minutes to go in the quarter. The Mustangs offense revolved around the strong shooting of Jenny Vaughan as she had 17 points in the first quarter alone, including a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc. Sensing the game already getting away from them, the Gryphon's caught fire, going on a 10-3 run. Katherine MacTavish scored eight points for the Gryphon's in the quarter as play concluded with the Gryphon's trailing by a more manageable score of 22-14.
Western started the second quarter much the same as the first, dominating the Gryphon's to the tune of 9-3 opening run to increase their lead to 31-17. Katherine MacTavish continued her strong play with another seven points in the second. On the defensive end Guelph made sure to key in on Western's Jenny Vaughan, holding her to just four points in the second after allowing her to score 17 in the first quarter. Back to back three-pointers from Guelph's Katelyn Yallin with under a minute to play cut Western's lead to seven. Western's Mackenzie Puklicz drew a foul with 10 seconds on the clock, and after splitting her two free throws the half ended with Western up 37-29.
Coming out of the halftime break Guelph was poised to not let Western capture momentum early as the Gryphon's went on an 8-4 opening run capped off by Dana Van Balkom converted free throw attempt. Back and forth play saw both teams exchange baskets, with Western up 47-37. Marlee Freeman hit a three pointer to start a Gryphon 6-0 run with under five minutes to make it a four-point game. Western managed to mitigate the damage by going on a short run of their own, but more hot shooting from Marlee Freeman made the score 55-52 heading into the final quarter. Marlee Freeman tallied 10 points in the quarter, while Katherine MacTavish added another seven for the Gryphon's.
Another quick start for the Mustangs added to their lead as they opened the final quarter on a 7-0 run. That run seemed to solidify things for the Mustangs. Although Guelph did manage to go on small runs of their own, Western managed to come up with timely baskets just as momentum seemed to be swinging in the Gryphon's favour. Dana Van Balkom hit a late three-pointer to make things interesting, but it was too little too late, as the early deficit was just too much to overcome for the Gryphon's.
Guelph tips off again at home on Saturday at 1:00 pm against the Brock Badgers.
