Windsor men, Guelph women golden at OUA Track and Field Championships

WINDSOR, Ont. - Following two days of competition, the University of Guelph Gryphons women and University of Windsor Lancers men are the 2016 OUA Track and Field Champions.  This is the Lancers 23rd OUA championship in the past 26 seasons, while the Gryphons captured the Waterloo Trophy for the third time in the past four seasons.

With a total of 35 gold medals awarded and seven new OUA meet records the 2016 OUA Championships are a wrap from the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse in Windsor, Ont.

The Gryphon women dominated this weekend's event, finishing with 178 points, followed by the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in second with 131, one point ahead of the Western Mustangs who earned 130.

On the men's side, the host Lancers earned 174 points to take home the 2016 team title. Guelph placed second with a combined 143 points, and Western was third with 96 points. 

The Guelph women earned one gold medal on Saturday in the women's 60m Ambulatory final. Leah Robinson raced her way to first place over Virginia McLachlan of Windsor with a time of 9.64, a new OUA meet record. Robinson beat her OUA meet record of 9.68 which she set last year at the 2015 OUA Championships. Guelph had a number of top three finishes, finding the podium in nine events on Saturday afternoon. 

The Toronto Varsity Blues women's team won five gold medals on Saturday. Rachel Jewett took home first place in the women's 600m with a time of 1:31:92. Danielle Delage earned a gold medal for her 1.74m performance in the high jump, and Julia Stille won the women's triple jump with a distance of 12.45m. Gabriella Stafford was stellar for the Varsity Blues, earning her second OUA meet record in the women's 1500m with a time of 4:15:67. To top off the Blues' gold medal haul, their women's 4X400m relay team earned first place with a time of 3:49:86. 

Other gold medal performances on the women's side were by York's Brittany Crew with a new OUA meet record in the weight throw with a distance of 18.75m and Western's Joy Spear Chief-Morris who won the 60m in time of 7.46. Western's 4 x 200m relay team also raced their way to gold with a stellar performance of 1:40:08. 

The Windsor men took home one gold medal on Saturday afternoon in the men's 4 x 200m relay with a time 1:28:74. Windsor earned top 3 finishes in five events, including a silver and bronze in the men's 600m, 1500m and pole vault. The Lancers also won silver in the high jump and 4 x 400m relay. 

Other gold medal performances on the men's side came from Toronto, York and Guelph. Toronto's Sacha Smart ran the 600m in 1:18:81, while the Blues 4 x 400m relay team established a new OUA record in a time of 3:17:06. Toronto's James Turner set the men's heptathlon standard with an outstanding performance, earning him 5626 points. For York, Nick Fyffe won gold in the men's triple jump with a distance of 14.87m and Bismack Boateng earned first place in the 60m with a time of 6.73. Also from York, David McKay took home gold in the men's pole vault with a stellar jump of 5.25m. Guelph rounded out the gold medal performances for the men. Christian Gravel won the 1500m in a time of 3:53:06 and Sean Cote won the men's high jump with a 2.19m performance. 

Guelph took home a total of 27 medals this weekend, with Windsor finding the podium 22 times and Toronto earning 18 medals. Athletes will now head to York University in Toronto, Ont.to compete in the 2016 CIS Championships from March 10^th-12^th.
