Western Mustangs Men's Team Wins Gold, Women's Team Takes Bronze At Canadian University Tennis Championships
The Western Mustangs men's tennis team added another banner to their trophy case on Sunday, winning gold at the Canadian University Men's Tennis Championship at Uniprix Stadium in Montreal.
Western's women's team also played well at the Canadian University Women's Tennis Championship in Toronto, capturing third place with a 7-0 win over the Dalhousie Tigers.
The Mustangs men advanced to Sunday's final with a 7-0 win over Dalhousie on Saturday, before defeating the McGill Redmen 5-2 for gold.
Western took two of the three doubles matches, with the duo of Brent Moffatt and Vahagn Tonakanian winning their matchup by an 8-5 score, while Andre Szilvassy and Amen Dhaliwal won their contest 8-6. Szilvassy and Tonakanian also won their singles matches on Sunday, with Western picking up another two points from Iain Sneddon Jr. and Mark Jensen.
In Toronto, the Mustangs won each of their nine matches on the day, winning all three doubles contests and another six singles matchups.
The duos of Sophie Bui and Angie Crowley, Melissa Lee and Aurthi Muthukumaran, and Julia Kobylianski and Christina Drotenko combined to pick up the wins in doubles action. Lee, Bui, and Muthukumaran also went on to win in singles, and were joined by Laura Bees, Stella Iankov, and Pukraj Gill to complete the Mustangs sweep over the Tigers.
