MALTAIS AND JONES BREAK LAURENTIAN SWIM RECORDS

TORONTO - Five members of the Laurentian Aqua Vees competed at the Ontario Cup over the weekend at the University of Toronto. The team posted strong results with two of its swimmers breaking team records.
Brittany Maltais of Trenton, Ont. and Emily Jones of Orangeville, Ont. broke long-standing team records in the 50-metre breaststroke and 50-metre backstroke, respectively. Maltais broke one of the oldest records previously set by former Olympian Nancy Sweetnam in 1992 and Jones broke the record previously set by Stephanie Kuhn in 2008. Maltais finished fifth in the 50-metre breaststroke, 22nd in the 50-metre freestyle, 46th in the 100-metre freestyle and seventh in the 100-metre breaststroke. Jones finished 13th in the 50-metre backstroke, 18th in the 100-metre backstroke, 70th in the 100-metre freestyle and 33rd in the 200-metre backstroke.
Kyleigh Commito of Sudbury, Ont. finished 25th in the 800-metre freestyle, 32nd in the 400-metre individual medley, 23rd in the 200-metre butterfly and 36th in the 400-metre freestyle. Jennifer Piper of North Bay, Ont. finished ninth in the 50-metre butterfly, 14th in the 200-metre freestyle, 23rd in the 100-metre freestyle and 53rd in the 400-metre freestyle. Mike Murray of Ajax, Ont. finished 20th in the 1,500-metre freestyle, 44th in the 200-metre freestyle, 45th in the 100-metre freestyle and 22nd in the 400-metre freestyle.
The women also competed in the 4x50-metre medley and freestyle relays. They finished fourth and 15th, respectively.
The Aqua Vees next race on Saturday, Jan. 23 at Wilfrid Laurier University. This will be the final meet before the OUA Championship at Brock University, February 4–7.
