OUA alumnae Russell and Benn win Olympic Bronze with Team Canada Rugby 7's

RIO DE JANEIRO – Former Mustangs rugby player Kelly Russell helped Team Canada capture the first ever bronze medal in Olympic Women's Rugby Sevens, as the Canadians defeated Great Britain by a 33-10 score on Monday evening.
 
Russell, who started in each of Canada's six games in the tournament, scored just prior to the end of the first half against Great Britain, giving the red and white a 24-5 lead heading into the break. It was a lead that they wouldn't relinquish, scoring another nine points in the second half to take a 33-10 win.
 
Including her try in the bronze medal match, Russell finished the Olympics with one try and five conversions, finishing the Games with 15 points.

Former Gryphons rugby player & CIS Player of the year Britt Benn helped Team Canada capture the first ever bronze medal in Olympic Women's Rugby Sevens with an impressive 33-10 win over Great Britain on Monday night. 

The bronze was the first medal ever handed out in rugby sevens at the Olympics with the sport making its debut in Rio de Janiero. 

The Canadians came into the semifinal on the heels of a 15-5 quarter-final victory over France and a 2-1-0 pool record that included easy wins over Japan and Brazil. Earlier in the day, Canada dropped their semi-final match against top-ranked Australia 17-5.  It was the second time in as many days that Canada and Great Britain played each other as both teams met on day two action in pool play, with Great Britain taking top spot in Pool C with a 22-0 win.
