MEN'S VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Marauders remain undefeated
Western 3 @ York 1
The York University Lions men's volleyball team dropped three of four sets Sunday (Nov. 3) in a 3-1 defeat to the No. 10 nationally-ranked Western Mustangs on home court at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
After the Mustangs claimed the first set 25-20, the Lions would battle back and take the second, 25-23. But Western ultimately closed out the final two, 25-19 and 25-20, to win the match.
Mustangs outside hitter Garrett May (Toronto) was exceptional throughout, converting 22 kills for 23 points, with nine digs and a service ace. Teammate Phil James (Ottawa) added 17 points on nine kills and seven blocks. Setter Sean McKay (Sudbury, Ont.) finished with 49 assists.
May would only be matched by York's own outside hitter Ray Szeto (Sutton, Ont.), who also marked 23 points on 21 kills, with eight digs, one block and one service ace. Sven Trodel (Sudbury, Ont.) was second on the Lions with 13 points on 10 kills, with seven digs, two service aces and block. Setter Paul Jakubiak (Toronto) finished with 44 assists.
The Lions started out slowly, only able to convert just over 12 per cent of their kill attempts in the first set. Western would capitalize with a 25-20 victory.
York was determined to rebound however, as Szeto and company began to match Western point for point. The Lions would come out on top in the end, stealing the second 25-23.
But May would follow Szeto's lead, attacking the net with authority, as Western converted almost 45 per cent of their kills in the third set for a convincing 25-19 tally. With a set in hand, the Mustangs were able to withstand York in the final frame, and claim the overall match.
The loss drops the Lions to 4-2 on the season, while the Mustangs improved to 3-1. The Lions will look to get back into the win column against the Queen's Gaels on Friday (Nov. 8) when they travel to Kingston, Ont. The game time is set for 8pm. They will not return home to the Tait McKenzie Centre until Sunday, Nov. 24 to host the defending OUA champion McMaster Marauders at 2pm.

Windsor 3 @ Nipissing 0
Coming off one of their better efforts of the season, the Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team just couldn’t carry that momentum over to Sunday.
The Lakers were beaten by the Windsor Lancers Sunday afternoon in straight sets, losing 25-14, 25-15 and 25-18, which drops their record to 0-6.
The wins and losses aside, the Lakers have made strides and have shown great moments, unfortunately those moments haven’t been enough to earn a victory yet.
One of the things that has been a constant has been the Lakers hard work and determination, but it hasn’t result in the success they were hoping for.
Patience is the key with the Lakers who made the jump from the OCAA to the OUA and expected a steep learning curve.
The Lakers will look to get on track next weekend when they hit the road and head to Kingston to take on RMC Friday night and Queen’s Saturday night.
The Lakers next home action comes Nov. 16 when they host the York Lions.

Western 3 @ Nipissing 0
? It seems like the Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team is just one swing and one point away from making some real noise in the OUA.
The Lakers lost to the Western Mustangs in three sets Saturday afternoon, but proved throughout the match they can keep up with the top teams in the league – and in the country.
Lakers head coach Eric Yung said his team played hard for most of the match, but it wasn’t a consistent enough effort from start to finish.
“That’s the number four team in the CIS. We can play with anyone,” Yung said.
The Lakers dropped the first set 25-22, second set 25-11, a set where they struggled, and in the final set, they fell 25-21.
After a very strong start, the Lakers and Mustangs went hit for hit, with very little separating the two teams, but in the end, the experience the Mustangs have paid off.
The second set isn’t one the Lakers will want to remember, but they bounced back nicely in the final set, competing and controlling the play at times.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as they dropped to 0-5 on the season.
The Lakers will look to get in the win column Sunday afternoon when they host the Windsor Lancers at 2 p.m. at the Nipissing Athletic Centre.

Windsor 1 @ York 3
The York University Lions men's volleyball team added another victory to its early season success on Saturday (Nov. 2), defeating the Windsor Lancers 3-1 at the Tait McKenzie Centre to move to 4-1 after the first five games of the year.
With the win, the Lions are now tied for first place in the OUA standings with eight points.
After dropping the first set 25-22, York would go on and claim the second 29-27, and then the next two, 25-19, and 25-7 for the victory.
For York, fourth-year outside hitter Ray Szeto (Sutton, Ont.) was impressive once again, notching 27 points on 26 kills and one block, while also adding seven digs. Third-year outside hitter Marko Dakic (Mississauga, Ont.) was also dominant in the match, contributing 14 points off of 12 kills and two blocks, and he also added 12 digs.
Setter Paul Jakubiak (Toronto) was on point throughout, having 43 assists to maintain his season average above 10. He is one of only two players in the OUA with that mark, at 10.57.
Middle hitter Adam Thompson (Portage La Prairie, Man.) would lead the Lancers with 12 points on eight kills, three blocks and a service ace, and also added four digs. Setter Andrew Chelladurai (London, Ont.) had 30 assists.
The game wouldn't open the way the Lions had planned however, with Windsor stunning a sluggish York squad in the first set 25-22.
The Lancers would open strong in the second as well, having the Lions against the ropes early and holding a 16-12 lead at the second-set technical timeout. But Szeto and middle blocker Greg Ivan (Toronto) elevated their games considerably down the stretch and eventually pulled out the win to even the match.
The rally was all the Lions needed to regroup, as the team began to find its stride in the third. Capitalizing on the shift in momentum, they claimed the set convincingly and continued to dominate in the fourth, cruising to the easy win in the fourth.
The Lions will look to continue their winning ways Sunday (Nov. 3) when they return home to the Tait McKenzie Centre to host the No. 10 nationally-ranked Western Mustangs at 4pm.

Guelph 1 @ Waterloo 3
Waterloo men's volleyball continued their hot start to the season with a 3-1 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday afternoon at the PAC.
The Warriors took the first two sets 25-18, 25-13 before Guelph bounced back with a third set victory 25-19. The Warriors then re-entered their starters and clinched the match, winning the fourth set 25-15.
The win puts Waterloo atop the OUA standings with a 4-1 record tied with York while Guelph drops to 2-4 on the young season.
Tyler Motherwell (Toronto/Warriors) was a pivotal factor in the Waterloo attack posting 12 kills in the middle on only 19 attempts and only having three errors in the process. Setter Scott Thomson (St. Marys) did a tremendous job of giving Motherwell good looks all afternoon long. Motherwell also posted six blocks and four service aces while Thomson tallied 41 assists in the win.
Jordan Dyck (St. Catharines) was also a factor in the middle posting seven kills and two blocks. The fourth year recreation and leisure student also fared well from the service line with three aces.
Rounding out Waterloo's attack was outside hitters James Evans (Rockwood/Warriors) and Aleks Poldma (Toronto/Warriors) with nine kills each.
Marc Wilson gave Guelph a chance with his 12 kills but the Warriors were too much for the third year left side and his Gryphons to handle on the afternoon. Patrick Strzalkwoski was also solid with his 11 kills in a losing effort.
Waterloo will enjoy the rest of the week off before returning to the PAC next Friday for a game with the Toronto Varsity Blues at 6pm. The game can be seen live on Warriors TV.

Toronto 0 @ McMaster 3
McMaster gave Toronto, and the Burridge Gym audience, a full display of its skills on Saturday. The CIS no. 2-ranked Marauder men's volleyball team played a devastating brand of volleyball to roll past the the Varsity Blues in straight sets (25-15, 25-12, 25-20).
Outside hitter Jayson McCarthy had a game-high 12 points for the Marauders (3-0), converting seven of 15 hitting attempts and adding two service aces, two solo blocks and two block assists.
McMaster was playing crisply from the opening rally of the afternoon, and took an 8-2 lead with an ace that forced Toronto to call an early timeout in the first set. The level of the Marauders' play made the Blues' mistakes all the more costly, and when Jake Dysselhof's sailed long for 13-5, Toronto called its second team timeout.
Momentum was all McMaster's, and the hosts showed no signs of slowing down as they charged toward the finish line in the first. Their clean set came to an end when Toronto's Will Colucci was jammed by a pass and couldn't clear the net with an attack.
The trend established in the first continued in the second, as the Marauders led 10-5 after an emphatic kill down the line by McCarthy. His power was on display yet again, as he took to the service line and hammered down consecutive aces for 17-6. Toronto had no answer for the onslaught, as Alex Elliot tipped to the floor through the middle to complete a dominant 25-12 win for McMaster.
A few loose points from the Marauders to open the fourth set allowed the Blues to take their first lead of the match, as McMaster called time while trailing 6-3. The setback was temporary, however, and the Marauders had the lead once again when McCarthy went cross court with pace for 14-12.
Side-out volleyball prevailed as the fourth set wore on, and McMaster put a straightforward match to bed with a combo block for 25-20.

The Rams never looked back after that, taking the set 25-22.
Guelph jumped to an early 5-2 lead in the second set thanks to strong net play. Ryerson managed to tie things up at 7. After that there was a lot of back and forth action, with both teams having a solid offensive performance. The big body presence of second year player Luke Would created some problems for the Rams, as he had multiple strong kills in the set. Ryerson took advantage of a few missed serves from the Gryphon's, jumping ahead 22-19. Guelph managed to tighten the gap to one, down 23-22, but Ryerson took the set 25-22.
The Rams were looking to sweep the Gryphon's in straight sets and opened things up with an 8-4 lead. Strong serves by Robert Wojcik was the main reason for Ryerson's early lead. Ryerson extended their lead to 18-13. The Rams seemed to be in control the rest of the way, but Guelph made things interesting late, narrowing the deficit to 24-23, and eventually tying things up at 24. Guelph ended up taking the third set 27-25.
The fourth set started off with a bang with both sides trading kills. The Rams jumped out to an early 10-6 lead with strong offensive play and a couple of Guelph miscues.
