York 3 at Ryerson 2
TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams men’s volleyball team squandered a 2-0 set lead on Saturday night, falling 3-2 (25-21, 25-17, 20-25, 21-25, 13-15) to the York Lions at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Ryerson looked strong out of the gate and was in control for the entire first set, trailing just once in the frame. Robert Wojcik (Whitby, Ont.) racked up eight of the team’s 15 kills in the first set and the Rams took the set 25-21 to earn a 1-0 advantage.
With the Rams trailing 5-2 early in the second frame, Wojcik stepped to the service line and took over the game. The third year attacker rattled off 12 straight serves, collecting seven service aces during the stretch, to erase the deficit and give the Rams a 15-5 advantage.
Ryerson cruised from there, taking the second set by a score of 25-17 to hold a 2-0 overall lead.
“He took over...it’s too bad we couldn’t maintain that afterwards,” commented assistant coach Lukas Porosa following the game. “It took a lot out of him (Wojcik) to keep serving basically half of the game.”
York seemed to be unfazed by the Rams dominant second set performance and came out battling in the third. The teams exchanged points all the way until 18-18 when the Lions began to pull away. A long Ryerson service sealed the set for York, giving them a 25-20 win to make it 2-1.
The Lions sensed a swing in momentum and established an early lead in the fourth which only grew in size as the set went on. Leading by as many as six at 20-14, the Lions were able to tie the match up at 2-2 with a 25-21 fourth set victory to force the fifth and deciding set.
Both teams played emotional volleyball in the final set but with the score tied at 10-10, the Rams fell victim to a controversial call which swung the momentum right into York’s court. Instead of leading 11-10, the Rams were now down and needed an extra point to make up the difference.
Strong serving from Ray Szeto and a big block from York’s Gregory Ivan helped the Lions close out the 15-13 set victory to complete the comeback and win the match 3-2.
Szeto finished with a game-high 20 kills while Marko Dakic had 16 in the victory.
Wojcik finished with a team-high 18 kills and Alex Dawson (Scarborough, Ont.) added ten. Will Otten (Delaware, Ont.) played great defensively, providing good first contact to the setter and finishing with a game-high ten digs.
Ryerson will look to rebound from tonight’s loss with a win over Nipissing on Sunday, October 27. The Rams take to the court at 6:00 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

McMaster 3 at Western 2
LONDON, Ont. – A second half comeback from the Western Mustangs men's volleyball fell just short as the Mustangs fell to the McMaster Marauders in five sets (22-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-18, 10-15) on Saturday night at Alumni Hall.
"We've got a lot of heart and desire, and we don't give up. That was probably the most important thing," said Mustangs head coach Jim Sage. "We didn't play well in the first two sets, we weren't in control of anything. We did it before last time we played them, pushed it to five sets after being down 2-0, but we can't let that happen very often.
"You go to five sets it can go either way, a point here, a bad call there, and you lose. We've got to take care of business a little bit earlier, but we're gaining positives out of what happened. They're the number two team in the country, we're that close."
After falling behind 2-0 in the first two sets the Mustangs began to turn things around in the third thanks in part to five kills from Doug Austrom and four from Garrett May, helping Western take a 25-19 victory.
The purple and white maintained their momentum in the fourth set, never relinquishing the lead during the frame. Strong serving from Austrom and seven kills from May led the way to a 25-18 set win and pushed the game into a fifth and final frame.
Unfortunately for the Mustangs faithful McMaster regained control in the fifth, and despite the two teams trading points for part of the final set, the Marauders came out on top 15-10 to take the match 3-2.
May led all Mustangs players with 16 kills with Phil James just behind with 15. Sean Mckay provided 47 assists, while Justin Scapinello earned eight digs to lead the team.
Next up for the Mustangs is a trip down the 401 to take on the Windsor Lancers. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 1.

Waterloo 3 at Windsor 2
WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers men's volleyball team dropped an exciting five-setter (27-25,23-25,25-23,20-25,12-15) to the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday night at the St. Denis Centre.
Greg Simone and Shawn Reaume each tallied 13 kills while Alexander Vukovic added 10 kills in a losing cause for the Lancers (0-2), while Zach Doherty had a game-high 19 kills and 23 points to help the Warriors (3-1) to victory.
The Lancers and Warriors battled throughout the first set, trading momentum swings to begin the contest. Windsor could not convert on its first set point of the match, as consecutive blocks from the Warriors gave them an opportunity to draw first blood. However, after crucial kill from Adam Thompson evened the game, Greg Simone took over on his serve. The third-year outside painted the back corner on his first serve, and followed that with a low ball that tipped just over the net and fell flat onto the Warriors side of the court, handing Windsor the first set.
The second half was much of the same from the two sides who traded points up to the technical timeout, with the visitors holding a slight 16-15 advantage. Waterloo went up by a couple in the latter part of the set, but a big block from Thompson evened the stanza at 22-22. However, the guests took three of the next four points to draw even with the Lancers at one game apiece.
Looking to regroup, the Lancers jumped out to a 5-1 advantage early in the third. Another huge block by Thompson energized the St. Denis Centre crowd and maintaining the Lancer spread. The home side took a 16-12 lead into the technical timeout. The men maintained their lead throughout, and re-took a one-set lead. The Lancers could not carry the momentum into the fourth, as Waterloo jumped out to an early lead that it wouldn't relinquish, sending the game to a fifth and deciding frame.
The squads traded leads early in the final set before consecutive Lancer blocks and a Warriors attack error gave the home side a 7-4 lead. However, Waterloo took six of the next eight points to pull ahead by one. Waterloo picked up their first match point at 14-12, and Tyler Motherwell iced the contest with a kill from the middle of the net.
The Lancers will look for their first win of the season on the road next weekend, where they will travel to York and Nipissing. The men are back at the St. Denis Centre on November 10 to take on the rival Western Mustangs.

RMC 1 at Guelph 3
Guelph, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphon's men's volleyball team defeated the visiting RMC Paladin's 3-1 Saturday night at the Mitchell Centre. Set scores were 25-22, 25-15, 24-26 and 25-17.
The Gryphons advance to 2-2 on the season, while RMC sufferes their first loss of the year 0-1.
Jordan MacIntyre led the Gryphon offence with 15 points (15 kills) followed by Patrick Strzalkowski with 12 points (9 kills, 3 aces).
Thomas McMullen led RMC with 19 points (11 kills, 4 blocks, 8 block assists).
In the first set the Paladins jumped to a quick lead. Led by the veteran presence of Thomas McMullen RMC was able to hold off any momentum the Gryphon's could manage. Guelph finally mounted a comeback tying the score up 15-15. A few critical points by the Gryphon's gave them a late 22-19 advantage. RMC battled back to make it a one-point game at 22-21, but Guelph did not allow the Paladin's a comeback, taking the set 25-22.
The second set opened with plenty of back and forth scoring. There were some great digs by both sides. Guelph jumped to an early 9-5 lead, forcing RMC to call a timeout to stop the Gryphon momentum. The timeout proved ineffective as Guelph extended the lead to 16-12. Guelph's Connor Cressman had an impressive second set as the Gryphon's took the set 25-15.
After taking the first two sets Guelph looked to end the match in straight sets. They jumped to a quick 6-2 lead in the set. Guelph extended their lead to 16-10, forcing RMC to take a timeout. The Paladin's made it interesting tying the set at 23, and then eventually winning the set 26-24.
Guelph opened the next set off on fire, taking a quick 8-3 lead. The Gryphon's never looked back, extending the lead to 17-11 and eventually taking the deciding set 25-17.

Waterloo 2 at Western 3
LONDON, Ont. – Western's men's volleyball team was victorious over the Waterloo Warriors in their first regular season game of the year as they toppled the Warriors 3-2 on Friday evening at Alumni Hall. The Mustangs, now 1-0 on the season, took the exciting five-set match with scores of 21-25, 25-21, 26-28, 29-27, and 15-8.
"The guys showed a lot of heart. That match had a couple of turning points in it," said Mustangs head coach Jim Sage. "A lot of those sets could have gone either way and we did a good job of taking care of business."
Leading the Mustangs in the 3-2 victory was Justin Scapinello with 18 kills, seven digs and one service ace, and Phil James with 17 kills and two digs. Leading the team defensively were Doug Austrom with eight digs and Garrett May with seven digs.
The Warriors took an early lead in the first set, but thanks to Waterloo service errors and huge blocks from Austrom and Luke Sim, the Mustangs were able to pull away to a three-point advantage at 13-10, forcing the Warriors to call their first timeout of the match. Although the Mustangs extended their lead to five points, causing Waterloo to call their second timeout, the Warriors were able to side-out after the break and eventually gain momentum to take a 19-16 lead. Waterloo would not let up for the rest of the set as they were first to 25 with a score of 25-21.
In the second set Western took an early lead as they were first to five and 10 before Waterloo called their third and final timeout of the set at 19-13. The Mustangs lead was cut to just two points after Waterloo scored five unanswered points, forcing the purple and white to call their first timeout of the match at 20-18. Despite a strong Waterloo push, the Mustangs would not let the Warriors back into the game as they took the second set 25-21 with Western rookie Gavin Taylor contributing the set-winning kill.
Although the third set once again saw the Mustangs start strong and maintain the advantage throughout the majority of the set the Warriors went on a late run to tie the game 20-20. The teams would go point for point with Western twice taking the game-point advantage at 24-23 and 26-25 until a strong offensive burst and a questionable line call allowed Waterloo to close out the set 28-26.
In the fourth set both teams fought to take more than a two-point lead as the two squads traded points. Although Western managed to take a 23-20 advantage, the Warriors continued to push and a three-point Waterloo run tied the game 23-23. Both teams continued to fight for every point until a perfectly executed Western service reception gave Phil James the kill and the Mustangs the game-point advantage at 28-27. This time they would not allow the Warriors to respond as they took the next point and the set 29-27 to tie the match and force a fifth and final set.
The Mustangs dominated the final set, leading 8-2 as the teams switched sides at the halfway mark and never letting up as they took the set 15-8 with a huge game-winning kill by James to end the match.
Sage says that the team has a lot to work on but showed improvement even throughout the match. "We were able to run our middle more towards the last part of the match and from last year I've seen a remarkable improvement in our blocking," he said.
The Mustangs are back on the court on Saturday evening when they match up against the McMaster Marauders at 8:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall in their second match of the season. Fans can watch all of the action live on Mustangs TV.

McMaster 3 at Windsor 2
WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers men's volleyball team started their 2013-14 campaign with a 3-0 loss (25-17, 25-21, 27-25) to the defending OUA champion McMaster Marauders in Friday night at the St. Denis Centre.
Shawn Reaume and Chad Hinchey tallied seven and six kills respectively to lead the Lancers in a losing cause, while Adam Thompson added six kills and two blocks. Jori Mantha had a game-high 15 kills to help the Marauders to the victory.
After dropping the first set 25-17, the Lancers jumped out to an 8-5 lead early in the second. The Marauders fought back to even the set at 13-13, and a long rally ensued that saw the visitors come away with their first lead of the stanza. They took a 16-14 lead into the technical timeout. The defending conference champions spread the advantage through the latter half of the set, taking a stranglehold on the match with a 25-21 triumph in the second.
McMaster jumped out to a 8-2 lead in the third, attempting to finish off the Lancers early. Windsor responded with back-to-back points on Scott Hickman's serve to take a bite out of the advantage. But the Marauders continued to pout on the pressure, and grabbed a 16-9 lead at the technical.
The Lancers fought back to come within four, and an ace from Hinchey was followed by a Marauder error, cutting the deficit to just two. After a McMaster timeout, Hinchey tallied another ace, and then the combination of Thompson and Andrew Chelladurai stuffed the Marauders' next attack, evening the set at 21-21. Hinchey served up another ace, and Windsor went out in front for the first time in the third.
The teams traded points, and with the set at 23-23, Hickman blocked another attempt to give Windsor its first set point of the game. The teams traded service errors, setting up another set point. But the Marauders survived once again, and a block on the ensuing play gave them their first match point. The visitors made good on their opportunity, as Jayson McCarthy finished off the pesky Lancers to record their first win.
Windsor will look to get in the win column tomorrow evening when they take on the Waterloo Warriors. Game-time is set for 8:00 p.m.

Queen’s 3 at Guelph 2
Guelph, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons men's volleyball team dropped a close 3-2 final Friday night to the Queen's Gaels in the team's home opener. Set scores were 21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 19-25 and 15-7.
Patrick Strzalkowski led the Gryphon offence with 16 points (16 kills) followed by Connor Cressman with 12 points (12 kills) and Rafael Leite with 10 points (5 kills, 2 aces, 3 blocks).
The first set saw the Gryphons jump out to an early 15-11 lead which they held for most of the set. The Gaels did get as close as 22-20 but were not able to get any closer, as the Gryphons used strong serving and net play to close out the set with a 25-21 win. In the second set the Gryphons led for most of the first half, until the Gaels fought back following several errors by the Gryphons to get within one point 12-11. The teams battled back and forth until the Gaels grabbed their first lead of the game 22-21 and went on to win 25-22.
The Gaels took the lead early in the third set and were comfortably ahead 21-13 until the Gryphons closed the game with a 7-0 run to get within one point 21-20. From there, Queen's ended the set with two straight points 25-23.
In the fourth set, the Gryphons took an early lead and maintained a three-point advantage through the first half of the set. From there, the Gryphons surged ahead 22-13, but then took their foot off the gas and Queens seized the opportunity. The Gaels went on a 6-0 run until the Gryphons closed out the set with a 25-19 win.
In the deciding set, it was Queen's turn to jump out to an early lead at 3-0 to force a Guelph timeout. The Gryphons lost their defensive intensity allowing a number of balls to fall uncontested resulting in the Gaels building on their lead to take a convincing 7-0 lead to force another Gryphon timeout. Guelph clawed their way back but it was too little too late as the Gaels closed out the set 15-7 for the victory.
The Gryphons are back in action tomorrow night for a game against the RMC Paladins at 6:00 p.m.

In the second set the Gryphons led for most of the first half, until the Gaels fought back following several errors by the Gryphons to get within one point 12-11. The teams battled back and forth until the Gaels grabbed their first lead of the game 22-21 and went on to win 25-22.
