CIS Top 10: Volleyball rankings released, McMaster men open at No. 3
In other sports, the only change at the top is in women’s hockey, with the reigning CIS champion Montreal Carabins moving up one spot to leapfrog archrival McGill.
Meanwhile, Guelph (women’s & men’s cross country), Alberta (men’s hockey & women’s rugby), Ottawa (women’s soccer) and UBC (men’s soccer) all maintain their No. 1 status.
In women’s volleyball, UBC was a logical choice to open at No. 1 for the third straight year. Last season, the T-Birds claimed a record-tying sixth consecutive national title and added to their own CIS mark with a 10th banner overall.
UBC received 45 points in the first coaches’ poll of the campaign. Following in order are Trinity Western (42 points), Montreal (36), Manitoba (35), UBC Okanagan (32), Brandon (27), York (26), Winnipeg (21), Dalhousie (18) and Saint Mary’s (16).
On the men’s side, Alberta (10), Trinity Western (3), McMaster (3) and reigning national champion Laval (8) all earned first-place votes but the Bears tallied 200 total points compared to 181 for the Spartans, 175 for the Marauders and 160 for the Rouge et Or, who open in fourth place despite the fact they ended an 18-year domination by Canada West teams last winter when they defeated McMaster in the CIS gold-medal final.
Rounding out the first Top 10 of 2013-14 are Brandon (153 points), UBC (134), UNB (73), Saskatchewan (64), Ryerson (44), as well as Mount Royal (36) and Western (36), who are tied at No. 10.
The CIS volleyball regular season kicks off this weekend in the OUA and next week in the three other conferences.
