The No. 1 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's soccer team erased a two-goal deficit en route to a 4-2 victory over the No. 7 McMaster Marauders at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton, Ont., on Wednesday night (Sept. 7).
The Lions were down by a pair of goals at the 34-minute mark to their biggest OUA rivals, but they got one back before the break and then a flurry of tallies to start the second half to turn the deficit into a two-goal advantage.
McMaster got on the board first on a goal by Dusan Kovacevic just 10 minutes into the contest, and the Marauders doubled their lead 24 minutes later when Yunus Mollayev scored to make it 2-0. However, reigning York male athlete of the week Dena Iezady (Richmond Hill, Ont.) scored his second goal in as many games in the 40th minute to make the score 2-1 at halftime.
The Lions wasted no time when the teams returned to the pitch for the second half, scoring three goals in three minutes to take the lead.
Cristian Cavallini (Woodbridge, Ont.) kicked things off with a goal just as the half got underway to tie the game, and less than one minute later Milan Beader (Oakville, Ont.) scored to give the Lions their first lead of the game. Iezady capped a crazy three minutes of action with his second of the night for a 4-2 advantage the Lions would not relinquish.
The action settled down after Iezady's goal and both teams had a few other chances but the score held and the Lions picked up their fourth straight win to start the year, improving to 4-0-0. The Marauders, meanwhile, fell to 2-1-1 with the loss.
The Lions will be back in action on Thursday night (Sept. 8) when they return home to Alumni Field to host the Waterloo Warriors beginning at 8:15pm.
