OTTAWA (CIS) – Sarah Inglis, a cross country runner from Trinity Western University, and Michael Cox, a soccer player from York University, are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 15, 2015.
Inglis, a Masters in educational leadership student from Falkirk, Scotland, dominated a field of 144 runners at the CIS championships at the University of Guelph's Arboretum, claiming the individual gold medal in a course-record time and leading the Spartans to second place in the women's team standings. A year after taking fifth place at the national meet, Inglis completed the six-kilometre race in 19 minutes 49.9 seconds, nearly 20 seconds clear of her closest opponent, to become the first CIS gold medallist from the Canada West conference since Calgary's Lisa Harvey back in 1993.
Moncton hockey player Marie-Pier Corriveau, Laval soccer player Gabrielle Lapointe and Toronto cross country runner Gabriela Stafford were also nominated for the women's award.
Cox, a fourth-year finance and business economics student from Calgary, merits his second straight athlete-of-the-week honour thanks to a superb performance at the CIS championship in Toronto, where he was named tournament MVP and helped the host Lions repeat as Sam Davidson Memorial Trophy champions. The 6-foot-2 striker, who was in his first season with the team, scored a tournament-leading four goals, including a hat-trick in a 4-1 quarter-final victory over Cape Breton and the game-winner in a 2-0 shutout against UNB in the national final. In the semifinal round against UBC, he also scored in the shootout session to help his side prevail 1-0.
UNB soccer player Robert Park and Victoria cross country runner Olivier Collin were the other male nominees.
