AROUND OUA: Golden Hawks fall in close contest with No. 9 Marauders
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 18, 2015) – Playing a nationally-ranked team for the third consecutive game, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's soccer team lost their third straight contest as they fell 1-0 to the No. 9 McMaster Marauders on Sunday afternoon at University Stadium.

Golden Hawks fall in close contest with No. 9 Marauders
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 18, 2015) – Playing a nationally-ranked team for the third consecutive game, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's soccer team lost their third straight contest as they fell 1-0 to the No. 9 McMaster Marauders on Sunday afternoon at University Stadium.
After holding their own against the Marauders in the first half, thanks to two key saves from keeper Ryan Mandryk of Ancaster, Ont., the Hawks surrendered the game's first goal 20 minutes into the second half. McMaster defender Aleks Vincic of Stoney Creek, Ont., finished off a scrambled play off a corner kick to give his team the 1-0 lead.
Laurier would press for the equalizer and came close late in the second half only to have a goal called back after it was ruled to have hit the football uprights.
Mandryk was strong in net for the purple and gold, making a number of tough saves to keep the game close. He would wind up finishing the game stopping five of the six shots he faced.
Angelo Cavalluzzo of Hamilton, picked up the win for the Marauders, stopping all three shots on goal.
The loss keeps the Hawks (4-6-4) on 16 points in the OUA West division and they remain tied for fifth in the division with the Western Mustangs (4-7-4), who also lost on Sunday.
As for McMaster, they improve to 11-4-0 on the year and sit locked in the third seed in the division.
Laurier will look to put an end to their losing streak next Friday, October 23, when they host the Guelph Gryphons in their final home game of the regular season. Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. at University Stadium.

Algoma earns point in 1-1 tie with Brock
The Algoma Thunderbirds men's soccer team earned an OUA point on Sunday after tying the Brock Badgers at Superior Heights 1-1.
On Sunday, the Algoma squad came out strong, with Jubi Joseph Iferi scoring at 31 minutes. The Badgers limited Algoma's scoring opportunities, preventing the Thunderbirds from pushing further ahead. At 90 minutes, Algoma was in favour to win, but Brock's Omar Hamadi managed to score a late goal at 92 minutes, tying the game.
On Saturday, in Algoma University's Homecoming game, the Badgers jumped ahead with a 2-1 over Algoma after a late goal in the first half to put the game past the Thunderbirds. Naif Alharjri scored the lone goal for Algoma.
In the women's action, Algoma Thunderbirds conceded three goals in each game, losing 3-0 to the Badgers on both Saturday and Sunday.

Trio of first half goals lead Varsity Blues to victory
The No. 10 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team moved one step closer to securing an OUA East first-round bye in defeating the Nipissing Lakers 3-0 Sunday afternoon (Oct. 18) at Varsity Stadium.
The Blues continue to sit second in the OUA East with a record of 9-3-2, just behind the Ryerson Rams (10-1-3).
After a defensive stalemate in the first half the Varsity Blues offence opened things up in the 50th minute.
Forward Russell Rodrigues found himself alone in the Nipissing box and with a beautiful touch the Scarborough native flicked the ball over the charging Nipissing goalkeeper to make it 1-0 for U of T.
The offence continued for the Blues just 10 minutes later when first-year striker Jack Wadden deposited a big rebound from the Nipissing keeper into the back of the net.
U of T's final marker would come in the 83rd minute when late substitute Devante Brown worked his way through two Laker defenders before finding the mesh to record his first career OUA goal.
Rab Bruce-Lockhart made three saves in the shut out victory.
The Varsity Blues are back in action this Wednesday, October 21 when they welcome the UOIT Ridgebacks to Varsity Centre. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. Catch the action live on OUA.tv.

Rams pick up 10th win of the season
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams men's soccer team picked up its 10th victory of the season on Sunday afternoon after a 3-0 defeat of the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs.
The Rams had a myriad of chances throughout the opening 45 minutes but were unable to get on the score sheet as the teams headed to halftime knotted at 0-0.
Nick Lambis (Pickering, Ont.) opened the scoring on his seventh goal of the season after the Rams worked the ball around the final third of the field. Jackson Tooke (Toronto) found Lambis who created space from a defender before sliding the ball home in the 50th minute.
The Rams doubled their lead 20 minutes later when Abdallah El-Chanti (Toronto) buried his second goal of the season. A late goal from Jamie Baker (Aurora, Ont.) rounded out the scoring in the 90th minute.
Rams keeper Ali Ghazanfari (Stouffville, Ont.) made his first start in goal and with great defence in front of him, earned a cleansheet victory.
Laurentian mustered just one shot throughout the game while Ryerson dominated possession and fired off 24 shots, half of which landed on target.
The Rams improve to 10-1-3 on the season while the Voyageurs drop to 3-9-2.
Ryerson is back in action on Wednesday, October 21 when the Rams host the Trent Excalibur starting at 8:15 p.m. at Downsview Park.

Ridgebacks settle for a point against RMC
OSHAWA, Ont. - Although the UOIT men's soccer team was hoping for three points on Sunday versus RMC, they had to settle for just one. Despite not earning the win, it was important to pick up a point as they look to clinch a berth in the OUA playoffs for the second straight year.
UOIT (5-7-2) is now six points ahead of the Laurentian Voyageurs (3-9-2) for the final playoff spot in the OUA eastern conference with each team having two games remaining in their respective regular seasons.
The Ridgebacks would surrender a late second half goal to RMC as they played to a 1-1 draw at the Oshawa Civic.
After George Meditskos (Toronto, Ont.) put the Ridgebacks in front 1-0, firing home a rebound off a corner kick 23 minutes into the game, the Ridgebacks went into a defensive shell in hopes of shutting out the Paladins.
The plan worked up until the 75th minute, when RMC forward Daniel Cruz capitalized off a UOIT miscue in the defensive zone to level the score at 1-1.
The Ridgebacks would pick up their offensive pressure after the RMC goal but failed to score the go-ahead goal. UOIT's best chance came after some fancy footwork by Lee-Victor Massunda (Mississauga, Ont.) that created space for Erik Petrovic (Sombar, Serbia), who streaked in and rang one off the post.
Travis Martin (Whitby, Ont.) made three saves, although he was busy challenging RMC's offence all day getting to a number of loose balls. Tobin Semple made nine saves in goal for RMC, including taking a ball to the face that caused a seven-minute delay due to excessive bleeding.
Prior to the game, UOIT honoured their senior class with Martin, Alexander Cuccovillo (Ajax, Ont.) and Idrees Sharrieff (Bermuda) all graduating this year.
The Ridgebacks next action is on the road Wednesday night against the University of Toronto. Game time at Varsity Stadium is 8:15 p.m.

No. 3 Lancers knock off Warriors in Waterloo
The No. 3 ranked Lancer men's soccer team earned their third straight win with a pair of victories over the Laurier Golden Hawks and Waterloo Warriors on the road.
Windsor shutout the Hawks 2-0 on Saturday night before earning a 3-1 win over Waterloo on Sunday. The Lancers are now 12-2-1 on the season and hold a narrow edge over the York Lions for the top spot in the OUA west division.
On Saturday against Laurier, it was Michael Pio and Jamar Redhead who controlled the field, scoring a goal in the first and second half respectively.
Niklas Bauer led Laurier in shot attempts during the match, however he was unable to slip one past Kyle Vizirakis who successfully blocked all seven shots aimed his way to maintain a clean sheet for the game.
Noah Pio scored his first of two and opened the scoring for the Lancers late in the first half against the Warriors. Holding a one goal lead throughout most of the second half, Windsor scored a pair of late goals to build a three goal lead with three minutes remaining. Iyowuna Jumbo scored his seventh of the year in the 80th minute, while Pio scored his second of the day in the 87th.
Vizirakis' shut-out was spoiled during injury time as Matthew Costa managed to fire one into the back of the net just before the whistle blew.
The Lancers will now host the Western Mustangs in their final game of the regular season on Sunday October 25th at 3:15pm at Alumni Field. Prior to the game, the Lancers will honour their graduating seniors.

OUA West title within reach in win over Mustangs
The York University Lions men's soccer team improved its record to 11-1-2 on the year with a 4-0 win over the Western Mustangs on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 18) at York Stadium.
The Lions moved up to second place with 35 points thanks to the win and are now in line to finish atop the OUA West Division for the ninth straight year with two games left on the schedule. They can jump the Windsor Lancers, who are currently first with 37 points but only have one game remaining, with a pair of wins against last-place Algoma next weekend.
The first half saw the Lions with majority of possession and chances in front of net, outshooting the Mustangs 12-4. However, despite the Lions' relentless pressure in the final third they couldn't find the back of the net.
It didn't take long in the second half, however, as the Lions capitalized early within the first two minutes to grab a quick 2-0 lead. The first goal came in the 46th minute after Jarek Whiteman (Brampton, Ont.) squeezed the ball past the Western goalkeeper from an impossible angle, and he scored again in the 48th minute from a fast developing play with Michael Cox (Calgary).
A few minutes later in the 55th minute Cox upped the damage to 3-0. Running onto a through pass, Cox beat Mustang keeper Ben Cowmen to the loose ball and calmly passed it into the net.
The Lions continued to dominate the second half and in the 75th minute they added a fourth goal to the score line. Thanks to a dangerous pass into the box from Joey Cicchillo (North York, Ont.), the Mustang defender lost his footing and accidently hit the ball past his own keeper.
This is the eighth shutout for starting York goalkeeper Colm Vance (Bradford, Ont.), who finished the game with nine saves.
In the upcoming week the Lions will be preparing for the Thunderbirds, who will be at York Stadium on Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 24-25). The two games will close off their regular season and will kick off at 3:15pm on both days.

Queen's doubles up Trent, third in OUA East with two games remaining
PETERBOROUGH, Ont. (October 18, 2015)- The Queen's Gaels men's soccer team defeated the Trent Excalibur 4-2 on Sunday afternoon, giving them some breathing room in the OUA East division standings heading into the final week of the regular season.

The Gaels (8-2-4) have a four-point cushion on the fourth-place Carleton Ravens (6-2-6) with just two games remaining for all the East division squads. They also sit just one point back from the Toronto Varsity Blues (9-3-2) in second, but remain five back of Ryerson (10-1-3).
